Oscar M. LYONS was born September 1849 in Ohio and died in 1930. Oscar LYONS and Polly J. LAMPSON married on 7 Aug 1872 at Douglas County, Kansas. Polly J. LAMPSON was born November 1850 in Ohio and died at the age of 49 years, 8 months and 9 days on July 21, 1900. Both Oscar and Polly are buried at Valley Brook Cemetery, Osage County, Kansas. According to verbal history, Oscar was orphaned at a young age and no family history is available. The 1870 and 1880 U.S. censuses for Kansas indicate Oscar was born in Ohio. The 1900 census shows Oscar and both of his parents were born in Ohio. More about the LAMPSON family.
Oscar and Polly were the parents of at least six children:
1. William M. LYONS was born May 1873 in Kansas (1910 U.S. Kansas
census); he died in 1955. William married Ida M. ________.
Ida was born in 6 May 1874 and died in 3 Mar 1975 (dates from FindAGrave.com).
Both William and Ida are buried
at Valley
Brook Cemetery, Osage County, Kansas.
William and Ida were the parents of:
2. Ralph W. LYONS was born about 1876 in Kansas (4 years old in 1880). He died in 1954. Ralph married Annie _________, who was born 1871 and died 1951. Both Ralph and Annie are buried at Valley Brook Cemetery, Osage County, Kansas.
3. Myrtle LYONS was born September 1879 in Kansas
(In the 1880 soundex is an Anna M., age 8/12 -
I believe Anna and Mrytle are the same person, since Anna's age would
indicate her birth was the latter part of 1879.)
4. Maude LYONS died October 4, 1885. According to another LYONS researcher, Maude either died in infancy or was stillborn. She is buried at Valley Brook Cemetery, Osage County, Kansas.
5. Luella May LYONS was born 22 Dec 1887 in Overbrook, Osage County, Kansas; she married Homer Albert CANFIELD 15 Sep 1915, at Topeka, Kansas. Homer was born 2 Mar 1888 in Kellogg, Wabasha County, Minnesota, a son of John Alexander CANFIELD and Anne THOMPSON. Luella died 10 Oct 1977 at Spooner Mem. Hosp., Spooner, Washburn County, Wisconsin; Homer died 19 Nov 1963 at Rice Lake, Barron County, Wisconsin. Both Luella and Homer are buried at Earl, Washburn County, Wisconsin.
Luella May LYONS was 12 years old when her mother died.
She lived in Topeka, Kansas and worked as a seamstress in a dressmaking
shop. Luella was visiting a cousin in Wisconsin, and worked in his
store. That is where she met Homer CANFIELD. They were married in
Topeka, and then came back to Wisconsin, where Luella kept house for
her husband, her father-in-law, and two brothers-in-law.
6. Nell (Nellie) LYONS was born May 1891, Kansas
Since Oscar LYONS and Polly LAMPSON did not marry until 1872, I looked for each of them individually in the 1870 Kansas census.
Oscar was 19 years old at the time of the 1870 census. I found him enumerated in Eudora Township in Douglas County with Thomas B. JEWETT and family. I do not know what relationship, if any, there was between Oscar and the JEWETT family. Thomas - a farmer - (age 29), his wife Martha (age 26), and a son Frederic (age 4) were born in Ohio. Another son, Alvah (age 1), was born in Kansas. If Oscar came from Ohio to Kansas with this family it would have been around 1869, based on the age of the youngest JEWETT child.
Polly was enumerated with her parents in the 1870 census. See the LAMPSON Page for more information.
I have not located Oscar in an 1860 census as yet. He would have been about nine years old at the time.
I did not find Oscar Lyons in the 1910 Kansas Soundex (Miracode). Oscar died in 1930, so I am still looking to find him in the 1910 and 1920 censuses.
On a supplemental page for the 1910 Topeka, Shawnee County, Kansas census is a listing for Lula M. Lyons and Nelle Lyons, both boarders. This census indicates that Lula was a bookkeeper in a dry goods store. Nelle was a stenographer in a "commission house."

The 1870 census does not give the relationship between the head of household and each individual enumerated in a household. I do not know how or if Oscar LYONS was related to Thomas JEWETT. |
