One of my sisters is married to a COPENHARVE.  In 2002 a few of my nieces and nephews asked me if I could help them find more about their COPENHARVE family roots.  My brother-in-law and his sister had very little information to go on, but ultimately we pieced together enough information for me to trace their COPENHARVE line back to Jeremiah and Sarah.  Jeremiah COPENHARVE and his wife Sara\Sarah Jane nee HOKE are the paternal Gr Gr Gr Grandparents of my COPENHARVE nieces and nephews.  Surnames associated with this line are COPENHARVE, HOKE, GUENZEL, OELKE, CHAPIN, KNOGG / KNAPP, HOYT, FRENCEL, possibly BIEDERMAN.  My brother-in-law's mother was a SORRELL, his maternal grandmother a WAGNER.

The rule for tracing ones family is to start with yourself and work backwards. The information below starts with Jeremiah and Sarah.  However, I found them by starting with my brother-in-law's father William E. COPENHARVE and working the line back:  William E., Edward Raymond, William J., and then Jeremiah.  The Pedigree Chart of my youngest COPENHARVE nephew, Joseph Kirk COPENHARVE would be the same for each of my COPENHARVE nieces and nephews.  Pedigree Chart at Rootsweb's World Connect.

Census records show that both Jeremiah and Sarah were born in Pennsylvania, as were their parents. Through searches on the web, I found that Jeremiah was a Civil War Veteran. One of the earliest Jeremiah and Sarah HOKE COPENHARVE - Fall 1888Nebraska references to Jeremiah is in an online listing of Otoe Co., NE; Military Pensioners, 1 January 1883. Jeremiah suffered a gunshot wound to the ankle. He was receiving a pension of $6.00 a month and was living in Nebraska City.

Since Jeremiah was on an 1883 Otoe County Pensioners list, I looked for him on the 1885 Nebraska state census. Jeremiah was enumerated in Nebraska City, Otoe County, with his wife Sarah and eight sons: Charley, Edwin, Harvey, Isaac, Morris, Willie, Milton and Eugene. This was the only reference of Charley I had found at this point; it was the first reference of Eugene, whom I subsequently found in the 1880 Nebraska census. The 1880 census showed that Eugene was born in Jun 1879 in Nebraska. The next youngest son, Milton, was born about 1876-1877 in Pennsylvania, which means that Jeremiah and his family moved to Nebraska sometime between the birth Milton (abt. 1876) and Eugene (Jun 1879).

I did not find Jeremiah in the special 1890 Veterans' census for Otoe County, Nebraska.  Jeremiah and Sarah were not enumerated in the 1900 census.  Jeremiah died in September of 1896; Sarah died in April of 1900 -- just a few months before the 1900 census was taken.

In December 2002 I sent to the National Archives requesting a copy of Jeremiah'sJeremiah Copenharve / Kopenhaffer pension information. In early February 2003 I received a packet of 170 pages of various documentation regarding Jeremiah's application for a pension due to a gunshot wound received during the Civil War and for Sarah's widow's pension after Jeremiah's death. Many of the pages contain much the same information about when and where Jeremiah was wounded and doctor's statements about Jeremiah's disability. However, on Sarah's application for a widow's pension was noted their date and place of marriage. Also included in the packet was a copy of an affidavit from the wife of the minister who married Jeremiah and Sarah.

Jeremiah KOPENHAFER and Sarah HOAK were married the 3rd day of January 1858 by Rev. Nathaniel E. Bressler in Fisherville, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. I checked the 1860 census for Dauphin County and almost immediately found what appeared to be the entry for Jeremiah and Sarah. On 12 Jun 1860 in Elizabethville, Washington Township, were enumerated Jeremiah KOPPENHEFFER, age 21 years whose occupation was plasterer. Enumerated with Jeremiah were Sara, age 20; Martha J., age 2; and John W., age 10/12. While there was a good chance that this was "my" Jeremiah and Sara, there wasn't anything definite to tie the Nebraska COPENHARVEs to this Jeremiah and Sara. Since the marriage record for Jeremiah and Sarah placed them in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, I looked for online information for this county. The Pennsylvania GenWeb site for Dauphin County is http://www.maley.net/dauphin/. One of the links from this page is to a 17,000 entry database compiled from several Dauphin County resources. I found an entry in this database that matched the Jeremiah and Sara I found in the 1860 census, but this entry had a third child listed -- a Charles KOPPENHOFFER, born in 1862. In the 1885 Nebraska state census was Charley whose calculated year of birth was about 1862 in Pennsylvania.

 Jeremiah and Sarah's Parentage

I have not been able to find any documents that name either Jeremiah's or Sarah's parents.  I may have found Jeremiah in an online 1850 Northumberland County, Pennsylvania census.  There is a 12-year-old Jeremiah KOPPENHAFER enumerated with a William SHAFER family. The birth year for this Jeremiah computes to 1838, which is the year of birth on the tombstone for "my" Jeremiah.  Northumberland County is adjacent to Dauphin County, where Jeremiah and Sarah were married. Some online sites name Jeremiah's parents as Thomas KOPPENHAFER and Barbara BITTERMAN \ BIEDERMAN.  Unfortunately, the censuses prior to 1850 do not name all members of a household. Only the head of household is named, so the 1840 census would not list Jeremiah, who would have been about 2 years old at the time.  I have found a 10-year-old Sarah Jane HOKE enumerated in 1850 in Dauphin County with an Isaac and Catharine HOKE.  Her year of birth would be about 1840, which would coincide with the birthdate of Sarah Jane HOKE COPENHARVE.  At this point I have no documentation that names Sarah's parents.  See Isaac HOKE page.

Listed in a cemetery extract of the Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City, Otoe County, Nebraska. Jeremiah was born 28 Apr 1838; died 15 Sep 1896. Sarah was born 16 Oct 1830; died 27 Apr 1900. I don't think Sarah's birth year is correct here. Censuses put her birth year about 1840-1842. Update: My sister Arlene and I visited the Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City in October 2005. The date of birth on the tombstone is 16 Oct 1839. Photo of stone.
15 Sep 1896, Jeremiah's obituary names all of his children as survivors. "The deceased leaves a widow and nine children, as follows: Charles, Mrs. Walburn, Edwin, Harve, Ike, Maurice, William, Milton and Eugene."
27 Apr 1900, Sarah's obituary indicates she was survivied by one daughter and eight sons.

1900 and 1910 census in Butte City, Silver Bow County, Montana.  1900 census and the 1910 census.
The 1900 census shows that Charles and Cora A. were married 12 years.  I searched the microfilmed Marriage Records for Silver Bow County, Montana, but did not find a record of their marriage.  The census indicates Cora was born in New Jersey, so it is possible that Charles and Cora were married somewhere other than Montana.
A daughter, Helen, was enumerated with Charles and Cora COPENHARVE in the 1900 and 1910 U.S.  Montana census for Butte.  The 1900 census shows that Helen was born March 1892.  The LDS microfilm 2388114, item 3, Silver Bow County, Montana Birth records has a daughter Helen born to Charles COPENHARVE  and Cora A. nee SHULTZ on 14 March 1892 in Butte.
I found the following newspaper article at Ancestry.com that names Cora's mother as Mrs. James W. Schultz.  I subsequently found Cora's SCHULTZ family in the U.S. censuses.
The Anaconda Standard: Tuesday Morning, February 26, 1901; Butte, Montana

Initially, I could not find Charles or Cora in the 1920 U.S. census.  In an Ancestry.com obituary record I found daughter Helen LORENZ named in her mother Cora COPENHARVE's death notice in Los Angeles, California.

Cora A. COPENHARVE, a widow, was enumerated in Los Angeles in the 1930 U.S. California census.
Helen and her husband Louis (Lewis) LORENZ were also enumerated in the Los Angeles 1930 U.S. California census.
Maurice (Frank) was the earliest COPENHARVE brother whose death I had documented, 24 August 1931. Neither brothers Charles nor Eugene, were named as survivors.  Since I found Helen and her widowed mother in the 1920 California U.S. census, we can deduce that Charles died between 1910 and 1920.
In the Ancestry.com historical records they have scans of some of the Anaconda Standard Newspaper in Butte, Montana, which is where Charles was employed. In one short note Charles' daughter Helen was mentioned:
Brief note in the Anaconda Standard, Wednesday, May 27, 1914.
Miss Helen Copenharve leaves this morning for Livingston to visit Miss Katherine Swindlehurst for a week.
At least Helen was still in Butte in 1914.
Ancestry.com has the Montana Death Index, 1907-2002 online.
I searched for an entry for Charles Copenharve / Kopenharve but did not find him listed. Did he die in California? The online California Death Index only has the deaths between 1940 thru 1997. Charles died between 1910 and 1920.
Back in 2005 I posted a query on Roostweb's Silver Bow, Montana message board asking if anyone could help connect the Montana Charles COPENHARVE with the Nebraska COPENHARVEs, and also help in finding where Charles died.  In March 2008 I received information from Jacki, a descendant of Martha COPENHARVE WALBORN, that confirmed the Montana Charles was the son of Jeremiah and Sarah.  This week (Nov 2008) I went back to the message board and posted a note with documentation that Charles was related to the Nebraska COPENHARVEs.  By this time I had found the Montana Death Index at Ancestry.com, and asked again if anyone knew where Charles died.  Just a few hours after I posted my update, I had a response from a person who has a subscription to genealogybank.com.  She found a death notice for Charles in the Butte, Montana, Anaconda Standard saying he had died unexpectedly on 8 October 1918 in Los Angeles while vacationing there.
The online California Death index (http://userdb.rootsweb.com/ca/death/search.cgi) lists a Helen C. LYMAN, born 14 Mar 1892 in Montana, whose Father's last name was COPENHARVE.  She died 3 Jan 1943 in Los Angeles County, California.

A. T. HAGUS

Edith and A. T. married sometime after 1930 because Edith was enumerated with her parents in the 1930 U.S. census in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota.  They married before 1938, as Edith -- Mrs. A. T. Hagus -- was named as a survivor in her father Edwin's obituary.

I searched the online Minnesota Death Index and Ancestry.com to see if I could find who A. T. HAGUS might be.
The Minnesota Death Certificate Index listed a HAGUS, ALF TRYGVE, date of birth 18 Dec 1880, birthplace was somewhere other than Minnesota, Mother's maiden name was INGELS, date of death 29 Jul 1956, place of death Hennepin County.
I next found a World War I draft registration for Alf Triggie Hagus, living at 2515 Upton Av. No., Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota.  He was born December 13, 1880 and was a citizen of Norway.  He listed his nearest relative as Mary N. Hagus, 2515 Upton Ave. N., Minneapolis, Hennepin county, Minnesota.  Mary's relationship to him was not given.
I was able to find Alf Hagus in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 U.S. censuses living in Hennepin County, Minnesota.  HAGUS census listings

Currently I do not have anything that links Alf Trygve / Alf Triggie HAGUS to Edith COPENHARVE.  However, this is the only HAGUS whose information came close to being A. T. HAGUS.

1888, listed in the Omaha City Directory as Edward COPENHAVER, boarding at the Omaha House. His occupation was a printer for The Bee, an early Omaha newspaper. Also listed was H. COPENHAVER, boarding at the same address, whose occupation was also given as printer at the Bee.
21 Jul 1888, Edwin COPENHARVE of Omaha, married Amy ODIORNE of Omaha, in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska. Parents of Edwin were J. COPENHARVE and Sarah J. (nee) HOKE. Parents of Amy were C. G. ODIORNE and Julia (nee) SMITH. Rev. John Williamson, D.D. officiated.
South Omaha was a separate entity from 1886 - 1915 and had a separate city directory. Edwin was listed in the 1906 South Omaha directory.
Ohio 1910 Census Miracode Index and Ohio 1910 Census.
I found Edwin COPENHARVE in the 1910 census index for Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Edwin was 43 years old. Listed with him were his wife Amy, age 42; son Robert, age 20, born in Nebraska; daughter Edith, age 19, born in Nebraska; and son Roy, age 17, born in Nebraska.

Notes:

Martha COPENHARVE WALBORN's family bible shows that Harve was born  16 May 1868. (From Jacki)
Born about 1868 in Pennsylvania, based on information in the 1885 Nebraska State census
In 1888 an H. COPENHAVER was listed in the Omaha City Directory, boarding at the Omaha House, as was Edward COPENHAVER. Both list their occupation as printer for The Bee Newspaper.
In 1889 he is listed as Harvey COPENHAVER. In 1890, and subsequent years, he is listed as Harvey COPENHARVE.
Sometime back I called several Omaha cemeteries to see if I could find where Harvey's brother, Isaac COPENHARVE, was buried. One of my calls was to Forest Lawn Cemetery. They didn't have Isaac, but they did have a COPENHARVE buried there. The person I talked with said that a Katharine COPENHARVE was interred on June 24, 1891 in the old section of the cemetery. I later found an entry on the Registry of Deaths microfilm for Omaha, Nebraska. Katharine COPENHARVE was a 23-year-old housewife, residing at 2424 Pierce. Cause of death was Cholera Morbus and opium habit. I looked for an obituary, but the Omaha paper didn't do much in the way of obituaries at that time. The only information I have to link Katharine to Harvey is the address. The 1891 entry in the Omaha city directory has Harvey residing at 2424 Pierce, which matches Katherine's address at the time of her death.

1895 was the last year Harvey was listed in the Omaha City Directory.
In the 1900, 1910 and 1920 censuses Harvey and his second wife Ida M. were enumerated in Washington, D.C.   In the 1900 census they indicated they had been married 4 years.  They would have been married about 1896.
Aug 1931, named as a survivor in his brother Maurice's obituary. He was living in Washington, D.C.
Mar 1944, named as a survivor in his brother William's obituary. He was living in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Jan 1945, named as a survivor in his brother Isaac's obituary. He was living in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Through the Florida death index on Ancestry.com, I found the dates of death for both Harvey and Ida.  Ida died on 20 November 1950.  Harvey a short time later on 7 December 1950.  Both were cremated after their death in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Isaac, Mary and Ralph Copenharve
Photos from Jacki, descendent of Jacob and Martha COPENHARVE WALBORN.  March 2008
Isaac, Mary, Ralph and Effie Copenharve

I am fairly certain this is the Isaac Copenharve Family. Jacki had the photo to the right dated 25 Dec 1898. Isaac and Mary nee MATTHEWS married about 1894. Their daughter Effie was born 5 Feb 1896. Isaac is the only brother whose family members match this photo.

Notes:

Martha COPENHARVE WALBORN's family bible shows that Isaac was born 7 Aug 1872 -- it looks like the "Aug" was overwritten with May, making it 7 May 1872. (From Jacki)  Isaac's death certificate from the State of Nebraska Vital Statistics shows his date of birth as 7 Aug 1872.
1892, first year that Isaac J. COPENHARVE was listed in the Omaha City Directory. He was residing at 1038 S 18 St, as were Edwin and Harvey. His occupation was a printer at the Omaha Printing Company.
1912, Isaac and Mary MATTHEWS COPENHARVE were named as parents of the groom on their son Ralph's marriage record. The 1900 Census shows that Ralph was a step-son of Isaac.
1920 Census: residing at 2803 Woolworth Ave. Isaac gave birthplace as Pennsylvania and indicated both his parents were born in the United States. Mary gave her birthplace as Iowa; her father's birthplace was Ohio; her mother's was Michigan.  All other censuses show the parents' birthplaces swapped...father born Michigan, mother born Ohio.
The 1930 census shows that Mary's father was born in Michigan, her mother born in Ohio.  Mary's mother, Mary R., was residing with Isaac and Mary (the younger).  Mary R., age 88, gave her birthplace as Ohio.
Using the information from the 1930 census, which named Mary COPENHARVE's mother Mary MATTHEWS, I searched for both Mary's in earlier census records.  MATTHEWS census extracts.
Aug 1931, named as a survivor (I. J. Copenharve) in his brother Maurice's obituary. He was living in Omaha.
Mar 1944, named as a survivor (Ike) in his brother William's obituary.
1945, last Omaha Directory Isaac was listed in. In 1946 Mary G. COPENHARVE was listed as the widow of Isaac.
I called several cemetery offices in Omaha to see if I could find where Isaac was buried. Isaac and his wife Mary are buried at Westlawn-Hillcrest Cemetery, 5701 Center Street, Omaha. I found Isaac's obituary in the 28 Jan 1945 Omaha World Herald. He was survived by his wife Mary G., son Ralph W., daughter, Effie WEINERT, and two brothers Harvey and Milton. Isaac and Mary's graves are unmarked.

William and Ida GUENZEL COPENHARVE are the Gr Gr Grandparents of my COPENHARVE nieces and nephews.
Martha COPENHARVE WALBORN's family bible shows that William was born 17 Sept 1874. (From Jacki)
 William was Maurice's twin brother.
William J. KOPPENHAFER and Ida GUENZEL were married in Nebraska City, Otoe County, Nebraska on 8 June 1897.
William was first listed in the 1901 South Omaha Directory; he gave his occupation as a printer. In 1917 William J. COPENHARVE was listed in the Omaha City Directory. He was residing at 5701 S 56 St. His occupation was an eng(ineer) at Ashland Park School. At the same address was Margaret COPENHARVE whose occupation was a milliner at Belle Hatch.
1919, Wm and Ida GUNZEL COPENHARVE were named as parents of the bride on their daughter Margaret's marriage record.
1920 Nebraska Census: residing in Omaha, Douglas County. Last name was spelled KOPENHARVE. William gave his birthplace as Pennsylvania and indicated both his parents were born in the United States. Ida gave her birthplace as Nebraska; both her parents' birthplace was Germany. Their 15-year-old son Raymond is enumerated with them.
Ida's parents were Ernst and Emma OELKE \ OEKLE GUENZEL. A biography of Ernst is included in the Portrait and Bigraphical Album of Otoe and Cass Counties.
1923, W. J. and Ida GUENZEL COPENHARVE are named as parents of the groom on their son Edward's marriage record.
Aug 1931, William is named as a survivor in his brother Maurice's obituary. Maurice's obituary noted that William was his twin brother and he was living in Omaha.
1941 was the last Omaha City Directory that William was listed in. (No directory was printed in 1943 & 1944.) In 1945 Mrs. Ida COPENHARVE was listed. She gave her occupation as a seamstress at Orchard and Wilhelm Co.
William's obituary of 21 March 1944 listed his wife Ida; a son Raymond of Omaha and a daughter, Mrs. J. F. MASSIE of Chicago; three grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild; brothers Harvey, St. Petersburg, Fla; Ike, Omaha; Milton, San Pedro, Cal.
Ida COPENHARVE is listed in the Social Security Death Index, which gives her death date as September 1966. Ida's obituary gave her place of burial as Graceland Park Cemetery in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska. I found her husband William was also buried at Graceland as well as William's twin brother, Maurice, and Maurice's wife, Susie. All four are buried in the same family plot.
Ida's obituary listed a son Edward R. and a daughter Mrs. J. F. (Margaret) Massie; sister, Mrs. Percy (Lou) Graves; 3 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren.

Martha COPENHARVE WALBORN's family bible shows that Milton was born 17 April 1877 overwritten with 18 April 1877.  (From Jacki)  The online California Death Index shows his date of birth as 17 April 1878.
Milton Henry COPENHARVE married Josia KOHN, daughter of Frank and Elizabeth RUSSELL KOHN, on 25 December 1900, at Nebraska City, Otoe County, Nebraska.
South Omaha was a separate entity from 1886 - 1915 and had a separate city directory. Milton H. was first listed in the 1901 South Omaha Directory; he gave his occupation as a yardman at the Stock Yards Co.
1920 Nebraska Douglas County Census. This is the first reference of Milton's wife Josephine I found. (I subsequently found Milton and Josephine in the 1910 Nebraska census.) There was a Josephine K. COPENHARVE listed in the California Death Index, but I did not have any information to link Milton and Josephine at that time. The California death index shows that Josephine's mother's maiden name was LUKAS; it did not give her father's last name nor did it give her place of birth. The California index indicated that Josephine was born 1 Jan 1878, and the 1900 Otoe County Nebraska census showed she was born Jan 1878. Even though the maiden name of Josephine's mother does not match what is on their marriage record, I believe this is the right Josephine.
1928 was the last year Milton was listed in the Omaha City Directory.
Aug 1931, named as a survivor in his brother Maurice's obituary. He was living in San Pedro, California.
Mar 1944, named as a survivor in his brother William's obituary. He was living in San Pedro, California.
Jan 1945, named as a survivor in his brother Isaac's obituary. He was living in San Pedro, California.
Milton Henry COPENHARVE is listed in the California Death Index. According to this entry, Milton was born 17 Apr 1878 in Pennsylvania; his mother's maiden name was HOKE; he died in Los Angeles on 17 Feb 1945 at the age of 66 yrs.

Notes:

Martha COPENHARVE WALBORN's family bible shows that Eugene Lee was born 4 Apr 1880.  (From Jacki)
Eugene was enumerated with his parents Jeremiah and Sarah in the 1880 Nebraska census for Nebraska City in Otoe County. His age was give as 11/12 and since he was born within the census year, his month of birth was also given -- June. That would make his birth date June of 1879. He was born in Nebraska.
Eugene is also enumerated in the 1885 Nebraska State census for Nebraska City.
I didn't find Eugene in the 1900 Nebraska soundex at first, because his name was mistakenly spelled COPENHONER, which changed the soundex code. I later found Eugene in the soundex by reading through all the soundex codes starting with COPEN. The 1900 Nebraska census shows Eugene was boarding with another family in Nebraska City; he was working as a butcher. This census would have been taken just a few months after the death of Eugene's mother, Sarah Jane HOKE COPENHARVE. His birthdate is given as April 1880 in this census, which is about a year off of what the 1880 census has. (This is not an unusual occurrence though). This is the last reference I've found for Eugene. He was not named as a survivor in any of his brothers' obituaries.
The Public Library in Nebraska City has several years of the Nebraska City Directories. The first directory after 1900 that is available at the library is the 1905-06. Eugene was not listed in this directory.
Maurice (Frank) is the earliest COPENHARVE brother whose death I have documented, 24 August 1931. Neither Charles nor Eugene, were named as survivors.
In October 2005 my sister Arlene serendipitously came across an entry for a Eugene Copenharve in the Find A Grave website.  (http://www.findagrave.com/index.html)  The entry indicated that Eugene was buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery, which is located in South Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska.  It gave his date of death as 1901.  The microfilmed cemetery index for Laurel Hill is located in the microfilm room of the W. Dale Clark Library in downtown Omaha.  The index card showed that Eugene was 21 years old, which would put his year of birth at 1880; date of death was 22 April 1901; buried in Block 6, Row 3, Grave 31.
Arlene and I visited the Laurel Hill Cemetery in the hope that we could find Eugene's grave site.  We were unable to locate a gravesite and are speculating that his grave is not marked.
The Omaha Library has the death registers for Douglas County, City of South Omaha and City of Omaha on microfilm.  Using the date from the Laurel Hill index, Arlene and I searched the registers and found an entry in the City of South Omaha.  Eugene Copenharve died of pneumonia on 19 April 1901 at the age of 21 years and 16 days.  His address was 718 N. 26 street in South Omaha.
In March 2008 I received an e-mail from Jacki, a descendant of Jacob WALBORN and Martha Jane nee COPENHARVE.  In subsequent e-mails Jacki sent me scans of the front pages in Martha's family bible.  One of the pages had a copy of Eugene's obituary, which gave solid evidence that the Eugene COPENHARVE, whom Arlene and I found buried at Laurel Hill cemetery, was the youngest son of Jacob and Sarah.
