Sandelier Park Is Dedicated In Clayton (New Jersey)

The Franklin Township Sentinel - September 15, 1988

On September 5th, the Borough of Clayton dedicated Robert Sandelier Memorial Park, a new senior citizen recreational facility located behind the Municipal Building at Delsea Drive and East High Street.

Over one hundred borough residents, many of whom were associated with Mr. Sandelier during his many years of public service to the borough, attended the Labor Day morning dedication. County and Borough officials and the Sandelier Family were also in attendance. The Reverend Glenn Wagner of the First Baptist church in Clayton delivered the invocation, after which Mayor Charles A. Ferrel gave the welcoming address.

Brief remarks were also made by Councilman Keith Costill, Chairman of Parks Recreation and Environment Committee; Richard J. O'Donnell, President of the Clayton Senior Citizens Club; and James Gaglianone, Secretary of the Clayton Sewerage Authority, upon which Mr. Sandelier served as a charter member and as Chairman for the 25 years preceeding his death on January 14th of this year. Gaglianone recalled Sandelier's years and community leadership and his role in bringing many municipal projects to fruition, such as the high school, the new municipal building, and the Borough's Little League field.

The dedication ceremony also included a ceremonial tree planting by the Sandelier family and a ribbon cutting by Mr. Sandelier's wife, Helen. Afterwards, those attending the dedication enjoyed coffee and danish donated by Mikay's Pastry Shop of Clayton.

The dedication of the Robert Sandlier (sic) Park for senior citizens was held Labor Day. The park is located behind the Municipal Building with the entrance on E. High Street.

About seventy persons attended including many members of the Sandelier family and several freeholders. An evergreen tree was planted in Bob's memory. He loved trees and had refused to cut down those on his property at Sandy's Island. The ribbon cutting was performed by his widow, Helen.

The park consists of several tables and benches, shrubbery and parking spaces. Everyone is urged to view this lovely addition to Clayton.

At a county freeholders' meeting on September 7th, a resolution was made to create a Seniors Advisory Commission, which will expedite needs and concerns of seniors citizens to the attention of the freeholders. Richard O'Donnell, president of Clayton Senior Citizens Club has been named to the commission. Any senior citizen may contact him, not just members of the local club. Of course, anyone in the age bracket of 60 years of age and higher are welcomed by the club.
