First Generation


1. James McAuley , son of James McGauley and Elinor Conway, was born on 26 Apr 1783 in Dublin, Ireland, was baptized in St Micheals Church, Dublin, Ireland and died on 12 Jan 1873.

General Notes:First wife Nancy Glass. The two boys born of this union came to New York City They became ministers of the Penecostal Church and also bankers.

James McAuley was born April 26, 1783 and died January 12, 1873. He
was baptized in St. Michael's Church in Dublin. He was the son of
James McGauley and Elinor Conway. James McGauley was born in Dublin
in 1723 and died on July 20, 1783 when his son James was only three
months old. He was quite successful financially (while called a
carpenter, today he would be called an architect and builder) and at
the age of 55 married Elinor Conway, the daughter of his business
partner John Conway. She was 22.

Note the difference in the spelling of the last names. After the
death of James McGauley, his widow Elinor dropped the G and spelled
the name McAuley.

1829-1850 Became assistant surgeon and apothecary to Royal Hospital on
death of his brother in law, William Macauley. ( James McAuley's
sister Mary married a doctor named William Macauley. Both Mary and
William died prematurely and their children were raised by Catherine
McAuley and James McAuley at different times.)
1859-1870 Lived in Blackrock
1872-1873 lived in Leeson Villa, 59 Leeson St.

coast 12 miles south of Dublin...nice busy little place too with a vague english
atmosphere to it.]

General Notes:Catherine immigrated in 1845 according to the 1900 census for Minden Township, Sanilac County, Michigan. She was living with her daughter Bridget.

Catherine married Alexander Patrick Hall, son of James Hall and Margaret McCormick????, about 1846 in Prob. Murry Township, Northumberland County, Ontario, Canada. Alexander was born between 1817-1822 in Loughguile Parish, Cluntyfinnan Townland, Antrim County, Ireland, died on 28 Mar 1888 in Port Austin, Huron County, Michigan and was buried on 3 Apr 1888 in St. Micheal Church, 8650 Independance, Port Austin, Huron County, Michigan 48467.

James Hall, resident at Grindstone City, has operated since 1870 as a turner in the grindstone mills. He was born Feb. 24, 1852 in Northumberland County, Ontario, Canada and is the son of Alaexander and Catherine [McCauley] Hall. The family removed in 1862 to Mahoning County, Ohio, where James became a miner at the age of 11 years, working in the coal mines. He was employed in that capacity until he was 16 years old, when he came to Sanilac County, Michigan and spent two winters in the lumber woods of Austin Township. In the summer of 1868 he was employed in the saw-mill of Charles Durand, located one mile south of Sand Beach. Through the following summer he fished at Forestville, and came first to Grindstone City in the summer of 1870. He entered the employ of Huron Stone Comapny and spent two months stripping stone, after which he became a turner, and has pursued that vocation since.

In 1778 he bought 160 acres of land on section 27, in Port Austin Township It was covered with the forest, and he has cleared and improved one-half the tract. He is preparing to devote his attention exclusively to breeding fine grades of cattle, and has now a herd which contains some excellent specimens of the Short-horn and Holstein breeds. He also owns 160 acres of land, with 30 acres improved, in Austin Township, Sanilac County, Michigan.

Mr. Hall was married Nov. 28, 1878, to Bridget, daughter of Thomas and Catherine McCoy. They have two children, Catherine and Mary A. Mrs. Hall was born Feb 25, 1852 in Ottawa County, Ontario.

Mr Hall has held the office of Road Commissioner, of Port Austin Township, in which capacity he excelled.

15. William Alexander Hall (Catherine McAuley5, James1) was born on 30 Jun 1854 in Murry Township, Northumberland County, Ontario, Canada and died on 14 Feb 1913 in Tyre, Austin Township, Sanilac County, Michigan.

General Notes:William A. Hall farmed the Hall homestead in Michigan and as a young man he went into the stone quarry business with a banker who later became govenor of Michigan, Albert E. Sleeper. He lost most of his land when a young boy who worked for him broke his legs on a grindstone wheel. The boy brought a lawsuit. He turned all his land except 40 acres to his wife's Aunt Caroline(Soule)Thomas. Later the lawsuit was dismissed in court. Then Caroline gave the farm back to Lucy Soule, his wife.
According to land records in Sanilac county William Hall purchased 40 acres from his father on 1/21/1886 for $600.00. Also on 3/5/1888 he purchased 120 acres from his father for $500.00

William married Lucy Soule, daughter of Alexander Soule and Susan Mckinzie Blake, on 16 Jan 1889 in Tyre, Austin Township, Sanilac County, Michigan. Lucy was born on 19 Jun 1864 in Tyre, Austin Township, Sanilac County, Michigan and died on 17 Jul 1928 in Tyre, Austin Township, Sanilac County, Michigan.

Alex Hall was a farmer in early years. When he moved to the Toledo Ohio area he worked at Willys Overland until his death. Willys is now the Chrysler Jeep plant. His son, Bernard and daughter Jenny plus various nephews and nieces work their to this day. August 1994.

Alexander married Sophia Edith Knipprath, daughter of Conrad Knipprath and Margaret Steenly, on 12 Sep 1917 in Genoa, Illnois. Sophia was born in 1895 in Kingston, Illnois.

Alexander next married Hazel Ruth Smith, daughter of John Nelson Smith and Anna Ettie Karshner, on 7 Jul 1928 in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. Hazel was born on 26 Apr 1900 in Rising Sun, Ohio and died on 30 Dec 1942 in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio.

General Notes:His appendix burst one winter during a snowstorm; it was days before the road was plowed and he could get to the hospital. He survived, and lived several more years, but it is believed he eventually died of complications from the appendicitis.
