Introduction

I am descended from Johann Casper ("Casper") Weigman and his wife Anna Rosina. Casper was a "Freigärtner" (i.e., the proprietor of a small farmof perhaps 5 to 25Morgen who was free of most feudal dues) living in the village of Kühschmalz (or more accurately in the separate part of the community of Zindel, the so-called Zindelseite, that was co-located with Kühschmalz) in Kreis Grottkau during the second and third quarters of the 18th Century. His ancestors are currently unknown, as are those of his wife, whose maiden name is also unknown.

Casper first appears in the churchbooks of the Catholic Church of Kühschmalz in August 1723 in a church record indicating that he was a bachelor. In an April 1728 church record, he is first identified asa Freigärtner. The record also indicates that he was still a bachelor. A church record from June 1729 identifies him as a Freigärtner, but no longer as a bachelor. Based on this, he probably married sometime between April 1728 and June 1729. Unfortunately, no marriage record has been located for Casper and Anna Rosina.

Casper and Anna Rosina had eight children, four sons and four daughters, the eldest (my ancestor) baptized in 1730 and the youngest in 1752. At least five of them survived to adulthood. As adults, those children lived in the villages of Falkenau (Catholic parish of Falkenau), Hammer (Catholic parish of Falkenau), Kühschmalz, and Winzenberg (served by the Catholic church in Winzenberg, an adjunct of the Catholic parish of Koppitz), all in Kreis Grottkau.

I would be happy to hear from anyone else who is also descended from this family.

Relationship with the Scholz Family

Between 1730 and 1790, a period of 61 years, the Schol(t)z(e) family of Hönigsdorf, Groß Carlowitz, and Grottkau - Heinrich Ignatz Scholtze, schoolmaster at Hönigsdorf, and wife Maria Barbara; Johann Joseph Scholtz, schoolmaster at Groß Carlowitz, wife Anna Rosina, daughter Rosalia, son Franz Carl, and son Joseph; Franz Carl Scholtz, schoolmaster of Groß Carlowitz; and Joseph Scholz, Royal Tax Clerk at Grottkau, and wife Philippina - provided godparents for all 8 of the children and 24 of the grandchildren of Johann Casper Weigman and his wife, Anna Rosina. This indicates that the two families had strong ties. The nature of those ties is unknown.

Relationship with the Lux Family

The Lux family of Kühschmalz - Johann Matthias Lux, baker and innkeeper in Oberkühschmalz, wife Anna Regina, wife Maria Barbara, and son Carl Joseph - provided godparents for all 8 of the children of Johann Casper Weigman and his wife, Anna Rosina. The Lux family also provided godparents for decades for children of the Scholz family. In fact, the relationship between the Lux family and the Scholz family outlasted the relationship between the Weigman family and the Scholz family. This would seem to imply that the Lux family had ties with both of the other families. The nature of those ties is unknown.
