• 1. Borziwas, first Christian Duke of Bohemia, died in 910, married Ludimilla of Melnik. They had a son, Vratislav.

• 2. Vratislav (Uratislas) I, Duke of Bohemia, ruled Bohemia from 912 to 926, married in 907 Drahomira, von Stoder. (See "Women Who Ruled", pg.58.) The Duke was a Christian, but his wife was always a pagan. She, the regent, 926-928, aided her younger son, Boleslav in the murder of her mother-in-law, Ludmilla, and her oldest son, Wenceslas, for which she was put to death by Otto I. Vratislav died in 926.
  

  Vratislav I and Drahomira had two sons as follows:
  

  • 1. Wenceslas, Duke of Bohemia (later St. Wenceslas, the patron saint of Bohemia), appointed King of Bohemia by the Holy Roman Emperor, Otto I., when Wenceslas's father died in 926. He was born about 907, raised by his grandmother, Ludimilla, a devout Christian. He was sent to a Christian college near Prague, and he was through out his life a strong adherent of Christianity. He was slain by his brother, Boleslav, for his faith on September 27, 929 (Also reported as 935). This is the "Good King Wenceslas", for whom the Christmas carol was written.

  • 2. Boleslav I. The Cruel, born in 909. See below.
    

  • 3. Boleslav I. the Cruel, born in 909, died in 967. He, being favorable to his mother, sided with her in plotting against his brother, Wenceslas. Together they killed Ludmilla, his paternal grandmother, and Wenceslas. Otto I. led a vast army into Bohemia, laying waste in his anger to a large part of the country. Drahomira was killed and Boseslav was imprisoned, then released to become a vassal king of a subject Bohemia. Boleslav died, a guilty, unloved king, tortured by his own conscience and the contempt of his people. He was married and had two sons as follows:
    
    • 1. Boleslav II. See below.

    • 2. Boleslav III., another disastrous ruler, who succeeded his elder brother as the King of Bohemia, and eventually lost all Bohemia's foreign possessions and his own throne, being replaced by a Polish prince, Vladivoj.
      

  • 4. Boleslav II, King of Bohemia, died in 999. He maintained good relations with the Germans, and it was in large measure owing to this that the favorite project of his father was realized in 973. The Bishopric of Prague was founded, and the Bohemian Church detached from its dependence upon the German see of Resenburg, who was instrumental in the expansion of Germanism at the expense of Slavdom. Christianization and political development went side by side, and after a series of wars with Germans and Poles, Bohemia may be said to have found her natural boundaries by the beginning of the eleventh century. These were set by the Treaty of 1013 with the Emperor Henry II. Boleslav II. married Emma of Saxony, who died in 1006. They had a son, Ulric.

  • 5. Ulric, died in 1037, married Bozena, died in 1052. They had a son, Bretislav I.

  • 6. Bretislav I, King of Bohemia, 1035-1055, married in 1021, Jutha of Schwenfurt. They had a son, Vratislav II.

  • 7. Vratislav II, made King of Bohemia by Henry IV., the Holy Roman Emperor, ruling from 1061 to 1092, married in 1056, Adelheid of Hungary. They had a daughter, Judith of Bohemia.

    This lineage also descends to Sigismund, King of Bohemia, 1419-1437, King of Hungary, 1347, German King, 1411, Emperor, 1433. He was born in 1368 and died in 1437. He married (1) Mary, Queen of Hungary, 1382-1387, daughter and heiress of Louis the Great, King of Hungary, 1342-1382, and (2) Barbar of Cilli, who died in 1451. Sigismund is credited with tolerance for divergent religious belief, and he is cited as a significant person in the early development of liberal religion.

  • 8. Judith of Bohemia, married in 1080, Vladislas I., Herman, King of Poland, 1079-1102. He was born in 1043 and died in 1102. He was a descendant of the first King of Poland, the first of the Piast Dynasty, Mieszko I., who ruled from 960 to 992. Vladislas and Judith had a son, Boleslaus III.

  • 9. Boleslaus III. the Wrymouth, King of Poland, 1102-1107, born in 1039, died in 1107. He married in 1103, Zbyslava of Kiev. They had several sons as follows:
    
    • 1. Ladislaus (Vladislas) II., the Exile, born in 105 and died in 1159. See below.

    • 2. Boleslaus IV., the Curly, King of Poland, 1146-1173, born in 1120 and died in 1173.

    • 3. Mieszko III., the Old, King of Poland, 1173-1177, and 1194-1202, born in 1126, died in 1202.

    • 4. Casimir II, the Just, King of Poland, 1177-1194, born in 1138 and died in 1197.

    • 5. Ladislaus Spindleshanks, King of Poland, 1202-1202, born in 1138, died in 1202.
      

  • 10. Vladislas II. the Exile, King of Poland, 1138-1146, was born in 1105 and died in 1159, married Christina of Swabia. They had at least two children as follows:
    
    • 1. Richilda of Poland. See below.

    • 2. Boleslaus IV., the Curly, King of Poland, ruling from Cracow.
      

  • 11. Richilda of Poland, married in 1158, Alphonso VII, King of Castile and Leon. See his lineage elsewhere in this section of Vol. I. They had a daughter, Sancha.

  • 12. Sancha of Castile, married, as his second wife, Alphonso II, King of Aragon, and Count of Barcelona, son of Raymond Berenger, Count of Barcelona (1137-1162), and his wife, Petronilla, daughter of Ramiro II., the Monk, King of Aragon (1134-1137, resigned, died in 1147). Her ancestral line goes back to Ramiro I., King of Aragon (1035-1063). They had the following children:
    
    • 1. Pedro II., King of Aragon, 1196-1213, killed at Muret. He married Maria of Montpelier. They had a son, James I., the Conqueror, King of Aragon, 1213-1276.

    • 2. Constance, married Emperor Frederick II. of Germany.

    • 3. Eleanor, married (5) Raymond VI. of Toulouse.

    • 4. Alphonso II See below.

    • 5. Sancia, married Raymond VII. of Toulouse.
      

  • 13. Alphonso II, Count of Provence, 1196-1209, was the father of Raymond Berenger IV.

  • 14. Raymond Berenger IV, Count of Provence, 1209-1245, married Beatrix of Savoy., daughter of Thomas, Count of Savoy. They had four daughters as follows:
    
    • 1. Eleanor of Provence. See below.

    • 2. Margaret, married Louis IX. (St. Louis). King of France. See this lineage elsewhere in Vol. I.

    • 3. Beatrix of Provence, married Charles, Count of Anjou, Count of Provence, King of Sicily, brother of Louis IX., King of France.

    • 4. Sancia of Provence, married Richard of Cornwall Plantaganet, Earl of Cornwall, King of Romans and Almaine (Germany), youngest son of John Lackland, King of England.
      

  • 15. Eleanor of Provence, married Henry III, King of England. They were the parents of Edward I.

  • 16. Edward I, King of England.

• 1. Baldwin (Baudouin) I, Count of Flanders, married as her second husband, Judith of England, born 844, widow of Ethelwulf. See elsewhere in Volume I. for the lineage of this other marriage. Baldwin I. and Judith had a son, Baldwin II.

• 2. Baldwin (Baudouin) II, Count of Flanders, of Bologne and of St. Paul, who died January 2, 918 or 919, and was buried in the Abbey of St. Pierre. He married in 884 Ethelswitha (Elfrida), daughter of Alfred the Great, King of England, and his wife Elswitha, daughter of the Earl of Mercia. See the ancestral lineage of Alfred the Great above in Volume I. Ethelswitha died June 7, 929. Baldwin II. was succeeded by his son, Arnoul I. Baldwin II also had a daughter, Melisinde, who married as his second wife, Fulk V. See this lineage in the Counts of Anjou in Volume I.

• 3. Arnoul (Arnulph) I, Count of Flanders, died March 27, 965, married Alice (Alix or Adelle) Vermandoisdaughter of Herbert II, Count of Vermandois, and his wife, Hildegrante, daughter of Robert II, Duke of France, later King of France. Herbert II. arrested Charles the Simple, King of France, at St. Quentin, and sent him prisoner to Peronne. Herbert II., who died in 943, was the son of Herbert I., Seigneur de Peronne and St. Quentin, killed in 902, by followers of a count of Flanders. Herbert I. was the great-great-grandson of Charlemagne. Alice died in Burges in 960. Arnoul I. was succeeded by his son, Baldwin III.

• 4. Baldwin (Baudouin) III, Count of Flanders, died January 1, 961. He married Mahaud Bourgogne, daughter of Conrad I., Duke of Burgundy. He predeceased his father, Arnoul I., who either associated himself with Baldwin in his government or else resigned in his favor, and on the death of his son again took possession. Baldwin III. was succeeded by his son, Arnoul II.

• 5. Arnoul (Arnulph) II, Count of Flanders, buried March 23, 988, at the chapel of St. Laurent in the Abbey of St. Pierre de Gand, whose wife was Rosele, daughter of Berenger II., King of Italy. He died January 26, 1003. He was succeeded by his son, Baldwin IV.

• 6. Baldwin (Baudouin) IV., Count of Flanders, died May 30, 1036, buried in the chapel of St. Laurent, whose wife was Ogive or Cunegonde, daughter of Frederic I., Count of Luxemburg, who died February 21, 1030. She was buried with her husband. Baldwin IV. was succeeded by his son, Baldwin V.

• 7. Baldwin (Baudouin) V, Count and Marquis of Flanders, married Adela, daughter of Robert the Good, King of France. See her ancestry above in Volume I. He died at Lille on September 1, 1067, and was buried in the Collegiate Church of St. Pierre. They had the following children:
  
  • 1. Baldwin VI., Count of Flanders, married Margaret of Alsace, later ruler of Flanders.

  • 2. Matilda of Flanders. See below.
    

• 8. Matilda of Flanders, married William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy and King of England. He was born in 1027 and died in 1087.
