The following quotations regarding the life and habits of Roxa Ann Hill Kellogg are taken from nearly an entire page tribute in the La Grande Evening Observer, La Grande, Oregon July 26, 1929 four days after death: ".........to this home established in 1862 no children were born, so Major and Mrs. Kellogg took into their lives and affection all the boys and girls of the neighborhood. "........when W.W. Baker left La Granbe he sold the family organ to Major Kellogg and that historic instrument remained in the possession of Mrs. Kellogg until her death.

"This was the first organ in the Kellogg neighborhood, soon Mrs. Kellogg's fingers learned to caress the keyboard of the instrument so that she accompanied the whole-sou-led singing of the community; and we who were children have been singing those songs ever since.

"I am but one of many who received these beautiful life�long impressions from the influence of this noble woman. And when I say influence', I mean that many who were children then and are parents and grand parents now have directed their actions and measured their lives by what she might think about this or that.

"While Mrs. Kellogg was very sympathetic she was also very courageous. It is related upon good authority that while crossing the plains differences arose in which a certain man under serious suspicion be promptly disposed of for the safety of the train. Mrs. Kellogg was convinced that the accused man had rights which had not been considered and that grave injustice might be done unless the movement be checked.

"She appealed to her husband, father and brothers to save the man until sufficient evidence should be offered. Opinion among the accusers gradually changed, the man was not executed, but on the contrary Mrs. Kellogg was praised for her strong convictions and dauntless courage in saving a man when his life was at stake.

"Upon the death of Major Kellogg his widow being child less and alone required the companionship of a husband; and in the course of events was married to Mr. William Moss a neighbor, who had lost his companion. Upon the death of Mr. Moss, she was married to Mr. John Blockland, whose companion had preceded him. In the course of time after the death of Mr. Block�land she married Mr. W. F. Grieder, who survives her. I knew these men personally and well to be among the best in Union County. They were all good husbands to her. In late years she was helpless in which case Mr. Grieder gave her that constant care which has won my lasting admiration for the man."

The fourth child of (7A)-Rebecca (Thornton) and (7)-Daniel Webster Hill. He was born in West Virginia, probably Putnam County. The date of birth is not known but it was likely about 1842. In his youth he moved with his parents to Wayne County, Iowa. In 1862 the entire family moved on to Oregon by ox team and wagons, settling three miles from the present site of Port�land. The only additional information we have concerning him is, he apparently continued to live in this section to the age of 93. He married (50A)-Martha Leggett. They had one son:

The fifth child of (7A)-Rebecca (Thornton) and (7)-Daniel Webster Hill. He was born in or near Putnam County, West Virginia, date not known but probably in 1844 or 1845. In his youth he moved with his parents to Wayne County, Iowa. In 1862 the. family moved on by ox team and wagons to Oregon, settling three miles from the present site of Portland.

In early manhood he settled near Spangle, Washington. and engaged in growing wheat and breeding horses. It is said that while breaking an unruly colt he had the misfortune to fracture a leg, later losing the injured leg at the knee. He married and spent his latter years in retirement in Spokane. They had fourteen children:

The child of (7A)-Rebecca (Thornton) and (7)-Daniel Webster Hill. He was born in West Virginia or possibly in Iowa, apparently in 1858 which would make him one of the youngest of the family instead of the sixth child as he is now placed in this record. He moved with the entire family to Oregon 1862. He grew to manhood and married (52A)-Alice C. Dryden. He died at his home in Vancouver, Washington, February 2, 1923 age 65. His widow lives with her daughter Mrs. Sylvia Monnastes Renoud in Rochester, New York. They had one child:

The child of (7A)-Rebecca (Thornton) and (7)-Daniel Webster Hill. The date of his birth is not known, the place was probably West Virginia in or near Putnam County He moved with the entire family to Oregon in 1862. We have but little further information concerning him except that he grew to manhood in this section and married (53A)-Nancy Culley a sister of Jim Culley who married (56)- Josephine Hill.

A daughter of (7A)-Rebecca (Thornton) and (7)-Daniel Webster Hill. The date of her birth is not known, the place West Virginia or possibly Iowa. The family moved to Oregon where she grew to womanhood and married a Mr. Grace. In 1923 they were living at Silverton, Oregon. We have no further information concerning her.

The daughter of (7A)-Rebecca (Thornton) and (7)-Daniel Webster Hill. She was born in or near Putnam County, West Virginia or possibly Wayne County, Iowa, January 10, 1853. She moved with the family to Oregon in 1862 settling three miles from Portland where she grew to womanhood and married a Mr. Pullen. We are not informed as to Mr. Pullen's business, but it is said that the family possessed considerable wealth.. They lived in Portland. Mr. Pullen died April 29, 1925 age 77. She died November 4, 1938, age 85 years and 10 months. They had five children:

The only further records we have concerning her are; she grew to womanhood and married (56A)-Jim Culley, a brother of Alice Culley the wife of (53)-Labon HIll. In 1923 they were living at Hubbard, Oregon.

The first child of (9A)-Elizabeth (Boswell) and (9)-Allen Hill. She was born November 11, probably 1838 in Putnam County, West Virginia. She grew to womanhood here and married (57 A)-George Alderman. They moved to or near Bainbridge, Ohio. They had seven known children:

The second child of (9A)-Elizabeth (Boswell) and (9)-Allen Hill. He was born March 6, 1840 on Thirteen Mile Creek in Jackson County, West Virginia, later living on Bailey's Branch, Mason County. He grew to manhood in this section and served in the Union Army during the Civil War. He married (58A)-Elizabeth Parsons. They had six children:

Nathan Hill lived most of his life near Tribble in Mason County and is probably buried in this vicinity.

The third child of (9A)-Elizabeth (Boswell) and (9)-Allen Hill. He was born February 3, 1842 in Jackson County, West Virginia. He grew to manhood in this section, engaging in farming and logging. He married (59A)-Dana Bailey, they had five children. He later married (59B)-Rose Wilson and they had five children. He lived the greater part of his life in Mason County near Tribble, West Virginia. He is buried in the Warner Cemetery on Mud Lick Creek near Tribble. His children:

The fifth child of (9A)-Elizabeth (Boswell) and (9)-Allen Hill. He was born October 29, 1847 in Jackson County, West Virginia. It is believed that he died at three years of age.

The first child of (9B)-Sally (Cartright) and (9)-Allen Hill. He was born at Rock Castle, Jackson County, West Virginia, date not known. He never married. He spent eighteen or twenty years in the U. S. Army, some of this time was spent on Indian guard duty. He was last heard from about 1890. He is buried somewhere in the west.

The son of (9B)-Sally (Cartright) and (9-Allen Hill. He was born in Jackson County near Rock Castle, West Virginia. He grew to manhood in this section, engaging in farming. He married (63A)-Alice Atkins and had several children. He is buried near Winfield, West Virginia in the County Cemetery. Uncertain records show the following children:
