(5)-LABON HILL Continued.
Second Generation
Labon Hill attempted to cut himself a house in a cliff of stone. By the time the
lay-out of a window and door were chiseled out the impracticality of the undertaking was so apparent
that the plan was abandoned and the workman discharged. The chisel marks on the face of this great stone
are almost as plain now as the day they were put there.
He apparently devoted most of his life to farming. His business acumen and
farsightedness was apparently not as acute as some for, it is said, he told of being offered 100 acres of
river bottom land located across the Kanawha River from the present site of Arbuckle and now (1943) valued
at $100 per acre, for a rifle he had. This however, was probably ninety or more years ago when land was
cheap and required a lot of clearing and a good rifle represented food, clothing and protection. He lived
practically his entire adult life in Putnam, Jackson and Mason Counties. He died in Mason
County June 21, 1886, age 77.
(6)-THOMAS HILL
Second Generation
The son of (lA)-Roxana (Worner) and (1)- Jonathan Hill. We have no record of the
date of his birth which was probably in New York State in 1811. Some have believed he was born next
after (4)-William, but now we know that William was born in 1807 and (5)-Labon in 1809. With these
facts in mind it seems likely that he was next after Labon. He grew to manhood in Putnam County and
married Amanda McClain.
There has been quite a general belief that he went to California during the 1849
"gold rush" and from there to Oregon. Thorough investigation has convinced us that he did not go to
Oregon. We believe those entertaining this opinion have Thomas confused with (7)-Daniel. We have no proof
however, that he did not go to California. Our meager records concerning him are not very clear.
