The Keeper of the Oracle -Peter Cox.
This idyllic scene is of a man made lake with the prosaic name of "Foulridge Upper Reservoir". It is on the road from Colne to Foulridge as you head out for Skipton and actually connects by a stream under the road to Lake Burwain, a local beauty spot.
The ever present Pendle Hill looms in the background.
Inclusion of this picture is pure indulgence, after all it is my website isn't it:-) I have so many fond memories of hiking around this area as a boy and as young man. | |
MAPS
Historical Lancashire Maps
This site has a long list of maps which you can examine on-line. They range from maps for individual towns to those for the whole county.

One that interested me particularly was a COMPLETE ordnance survey map of Lancashire as it was in 1829, provided by the Lancashire County Council. The map is divided into a grid; click on a square in the grid and you zoom to that area and there's enough detail to identify such things as Halls and large farms. I actually found a farm called "Green Middens" where a direct ancestor lived, I had no idea where it was until I saw this map.

Ordnance Survey
This government organisation has a very professional web site with many mapping services for Great Britain on offer.

Multimap.com
This claims to be a complete interactive atlas on the Web!! I've used it a few times and it's very good as a road map with options to view local services, accommodation etc.
In 1999 it was in beta test for the whole of Great Britain at Street-Level. I didn't much like it at that time but it's improved out of siight since then, you can even put a post code in and get a map of the streets in the vicinity - magic!

The UK Street Map Page
This takes a very similar approach to Multi Map but I think the latter has the edge.

Mapquest
This offers on-line maps for the entire world but you can home in on England pretty quickly once you learn how to navigate through the site.
I personally found the pages too cluttered and the response times very slow. If you just want England then stay with Multimap

LEICESTERSHIRE RUTLAND FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY
This is obviously a very switched on HS with a heap of links to various genealogical sites. Go to their site and have a good look around.
For maps and gazetteers in particular search their home page for "gaz"

Alan Godfrey has quite a selection of reprints of old ordnance survey maps from the 1850s to around 1910. You can get them mail order.

Joseph Aston's Lancashire in 1808
This GENUKI sites gives brief details of every nook and cranny in the Lancashire of 1808. It might not give much but it helps to confirm that a place actually existed in Lancashire at the time.
