Kraus "Recent" Story

The Recent Story -- Kraus recent common male ancestors

Kraus Y-Chromosome Haplotype, aka DNA Signatures

This page was begun 28 September 2003 and last updated 26 May 2005 -- rak.

Test results are reported here by Loci characterized by DYS Numbers, listed in green down the left-hand column of the table.  Most of our guys are doing the basic test, which covers 12 Loci.  I have done an additional 13 in case we ever need to make finer comparisons (those are in blue in the second column below).  In the following table , the reported scores (i.e. the number of times a bases sequence is repeated) for each marker for all project participants are and will be shown in the 2nd, 3rd and succeeding columns.  The number at the top each column indicates whose scores are in each column.  The column numbers are explained after the Table.

#8.  Prussian Krause Haplotype One, includes test results for two males (more information on these Krauses can be found at: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/k/r/a/Arnold-Edwin-Krause-Saskatchewan/index.html):

8A son of son of Carl Gustav William Krause (b1880 Friedrichshof, Kr.Schlochau, Pommerania), s/o Johann Krause (b1840-50 prob. in Kr.Schlochau) -- several Krause families were in the area at the time.

Three test results are pending:

two descendants of Friedrich (b 1833 Prussia) and Heinrietta Krause from the Schlochau, Pommerania area (more information on this branch can be found at http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/k/r/a/Arnold-Edwin-Krause-Saskatchewan/BOOK-0001/0035-0002.html), and

a son of a son of George Russell Crouse (b 1914 Van Buren Co, Mich.) son of George Conrad Crouse (b 1884 Van Buren Co) so of Adam Crouse (b 1847 Erie Co, OH) son of Conrad Crouse (b 1824 Ronshausen, Hesse) son of Johann Adam Crauss (b 1792 Ronshausen) son of Johannes Crauss b abt 1765, lived in Ronshausen).  Ronshausen is some 30 miles east of Grossseelheim and some 50 miles north of the Thuengen Kraus area.

The results given above indicate that:

1) the basic Thuengen Kraus DNA signature is 13-22-15-11-13-14-11-12-12-11-11-28 and that there is a recent mutation which first occurred either in one of Uncle Joe's sons or in that son's son which has created a new signature which varies from the original Thuengen signature only in that the first 11 is a 10.  All are Haplogroup G.  For the lineage of Haplogroup G, click on the Ancient Story.

2) the basic Pennsylvania/Maryland Crouse DNA signature is 13-24-14-11-11-15-12-12-12-14-14-31 and is 13 steps (in DNA terms that is a very long ways!) removed from the Thuengen Kraus signature and 14 steps removed from the Grossseelheim Kraus signature.  All of the folk who are just 1-step or 2-steps from this signature are Haplogroup R, more specifically the subgroup R1b -- which leaves little doubt that this signature is R1b as well.  So the last common male ancestor shared by these three Kraus families (Thuengen, Grossseelheim, and PA/MD) was M89 who lived  some 45,000 years ago.  For the lineage of Haplogroup Rib, click on the Ancient Story.

3) the basic Grossseelheim Kraus/Crouse  DNA signature is 12-25-15-10-13-15-11-15-12-13-11-30 and is 11 steps removed from the basic Thuengen Kraus signature and 14 steps removed from the basic PA/MD Crouse signature (in DNA terms both are very far removed!).  All of the folks tested so far who are only three or four steps removed from this signature are J2 -- which strongly suggests that this signature is J2 as well.  For the lineage of Haplogroup J2, click on the Ancient Story.

4) the basic Pennsylvania/North Carolina Kraus/Crouse signature is 12-22-14-10-13-14-11-16-11-12-11-28 the closest known relatives of which almost all belong to Haplogroup I, strongly indicating that this Kraus line belongs in Haplogroup I; click for the Ancient Story.  This line then is most closely related to the Thuengen Krauses, being "only" 8, 9, or 10 steps removed from that line, and is just about as closely related to the Grossseelheim Krauses, being 9 steps removed from that line.  It is most distant from the PA/MD Crouses being a full 18 steps removed from that line.
