Some Descendants of Francis Gilley, Sr.
FIRST GENERATION
1. Francis GILLEY I died in 1791 in Henry Co., VA. He was born in VA. Francis
Gilley, Sr. was the patriarch of the family in Henry County, where he moved from
Buckingham County, VA. (Almost all public records totally were burned in
Buckingham.) It is more likely that he was born in VA than he came to our
country as an adult from Britain.
His name is established in NSDAR as a patriot, but his wife's given
name is not known to date. Another source for information on this family is a
work by Mrs. R.A. Hairfield titled: History of Old Gilley Settlement in Virginia

2. Richard GILLEY I was born about 1756 in Buckingham Co., VA. He died about
1836 in Henry
Co., VA. Richard Gilley is listed as both a tax payer who supported the American
Revolution, and a
soldier in the Henry County militia who marched to the Battle of Guilford
Courthouse with Col.
Abram Penn to join Gen. Nathaniel Greene who commanded the American militia
against Lord
Cornwallis. On 8 July 1833, he made an application for a pension No. S 8 568 in
National Archives.
