Some Descendants of Charles Cox I

FIRST GENERATION
1. Charles COX I was born about 1690 probably in King George Co., VA.  Charles and Ida Cox settled in Henry County, VA after moving from Culpeper County, VA.
References in Deed A, No.2, The Library of Virginia, Archives. Page 674, Chas. Cox, 271 acres. This deed is to land that Charles Cox and his wife, Ida Bennett Cox purchased in Henry County on 13 January 1769 , from the State of Virginia [Thomas Jefferson was serving as governor.]
He died in Henry Co., VA. Culpeper Co., VA, Deed Book F, Vol.6, [1772-1774], Pages 81-84, 3 August 1773. Reference is made ...in a lott line formerly laid off for Charles Cox... 21 June 1750, Pages 184-186 in original book.]

Reference is also made to "...corner to William Kelly..." and "...corner to William Watts near his plantation..." Land being sold by Goodrich and Susannah Lightfoot.
Note: The Cox, Watts, and Kelly Families of Culpeper Co., VA lived near each other, and certainly
knew each other when they migrated to eastern Henry Co. from Culpeper Co., VA. The Cox, Watts,
Kelly Families may have come to Culpeper from King George County, VA. There is a marriage listed
in King George County records:  Richard Cox married Anna Crismon on 2 September 1750. Charles
may have married Ida BENNETT in King George Co., VA.

Ida BENNETT was born before 1765 in Westmoreland Co., VA [probably]. She died in Henry Co.,
VA.  Deed Book 5, page 230, Dated 5 Jan. 1796, recorded on 25 January 1796. Courthouse,
Henry County, VA. Charles Cox, Thomas Kelley and Cathy Kelley of Henry County appoint their
friend Mason Kelley of Henry County lawful attorney to receive of and from William Bennett in King
George County, all their part of the estate of Cason Bennett, dec'd. Signed: Charles Cox, Thomas
Kelley, Cathy Kelley. Witnesses: Lane Dutton, Jr., Tilmon Clark, William Horman.

Note:  The Charles Cox, 1760-1832, referred to here is probably the grandson of Charles Cox and
his wife, Ida Bennett Cox. He is also the husband of Frances Kelley, because Frances Kelly Cox had
a sister:  Caty Kelly Parks, and a brother: Mason Kelly, named in the will of their father, John Kelly Sr.
[Will Book 3, page 27.] Charles COX I and Ida BENNETT had the following known children:
    +2 i. Charles COX II.
3 ii. Margaret COX was born in King George Co., VA. Deed Book 5, Page 73, Henry Co., VA,
Courthouse, was granted Power-of-Attorney from her brother: Charles Cox and wife: Eleanor
Watts Cox, on 9 April 1793. Margaret is to sell a tract of 55 acres of land adjoining a tract
belonging to Thomas Watts. This tract left to Eleanor Watts Cox by her father in Cupeper
Co., VA. She died in Henry Co., VA.
4 iii. Francis [s/o Chas.I] COX was born about 1720 in Pittsylvania Co., VA,  now Henry Co.,
              VA.
5 iv. John [s/o Chas.I] COX was born about 1720 in Pittsylvania Co., VA, now Henry Co., VA.

Note to beginning genealogical researchers:  Notice that many of the surnames are not spelled
with consistancy.  I have tried to present them as they were in the original records.  Two points to
remember are [1] A name can be spelled/pronounced anyway the bearer wishes, and given-names
and surnames are not and never has been subject to copyright laws.  [2] Universal education in
most states was not well established until the 20th century, and then dictionaries and spelling
lessons mostly emphasize the correct spelling of common nouns. Therefore, any given surnames
may be spelled several different ways.

SECOND GENERATION
2. Charles COX II was born about 1720 in King George Co., VA [probably]. He died about 1798
in Henry Co., VA. Charles Cox II was mentioned in the diary of Maj. John Redd as being a member
of a long range hunting party to southwest Virginia in 1769. Maj. Redd led the exploring and hunting
party which returned to Henry County in the spring of 1770. [Maud Carter Clement footnoted this
in her book: The History of Pittsylvania County Virginia.]  T.J. Cox erected a beautiful monument at
the old Cox cemetery to commemorate this event. The author was greatly aided by the information
on this monument in tracing the Cox lineage, but believes some of the death dates listed are incorrect:
Charles Cox (wife, Eleanor Watts) probably died 1798, not 1816, because Eleanor--in place of
Charles--began paying the real estate tax in 1799. She is listed in the Personal Property Taxes of Henry
County, VA circa 1798, which is housed in the Virginia State Archives, Richmond, VA.

Questions to be researched: Could Peter Cox and wife Margaret Cox have been the parents [or
Uncle/Aunt] of Charles Cox I and his sister Margaret Cox? Did Peter Cox come from England and
get his patent?

Deed Book Culpeper Co., VA, Vol.2, 1755-1762 by Fred Dorman. [Original pages 154-56] Peter
Cox and wife Margaret Cox sold land that Peter Cox acquired by Patent on 29 Nov. 1749, it included
the plantation whereon Peter Cox now lives. Charles was married to Eleanor WATTS (daughter of
Thomas WATTS Sr. and Elizabeth [maiden?] WATTS) in Culpeper Co., VA [probably].

Eleanor WATTS died after 1799 in Henry Co., VA. She was born in Culpeper Co., VA [probably].
Eleanor inherited her husband's property in 1799 and is listed on the real estate rolls of Henry Co.,
VA. The Watts family's connection to Culpeper County, VA was established by this documentation
from Deed Book 5, page 73, Courthouse, Henry County, VA, 9 April 1793, recorded 30 September
1793. Charles Cox and Elenor, his wife, of Henry County with affection, etc. to Margaret Cox of the
same county. Appoint their trusty and well beloved friend, Margaret Cox, power of attorney to sell a
tract of 55 acres adjoining north base corner of a tract of land [which]Thomas Watts dec'd. lived on
and left to Elenor Cox in his will in Culpeper County, Parish of St. Marks. Signed: Charles Cox and
Elenor [X] Cox. The citation stated above, established Eleanor's father as Thomas Watts of Culpeper
Co., VA. It also places the Cox, Watts Families in St. Mark's Parish, where the Bennett, Cossum and
Kelley Families are also cited.

The will of Thomas Watts was witnesses by Henry Bennett. It is recorded in Will Book A, page 365,
Courthouse, Culpeper Co., VA. Deed Book "S", page 147. 8 December 1794, Recorded 16 Dec.
1794. Margaret Cox attorney for Charles and Eleanor of Henry Co. to William Wallis of Culpeper
Co. 50 acres in Culpeper Co.  Bound on south side Watts Branch near the bank, John Woodrow's
spring corner to said Woodrow by Thomas Watts, decd. Signed Margaret Cox. Witnesses: Hugh
McKilliups, John Hackley, Leo Barneys, Frederick Simmayner? Charles COX II and Eleanor WATTS
had the following children:
     +6 i. Charles COX III.
     +7 ii. John [s/o Chas.II] COX.
8 iii. William [s/o Chas.II] COX was born about 1760 in Halifax Co., VA, now Henry Co., VA.
9 iv. Thomas [s/o Chas.II] COX was born about 1760 in Halifax Co., VA, now Henry Co.,
VA. Deed Book 6, page 150, dated 1 January 1799, recorded 28 Jan. 1799. Courthouse,
Henry County, VA. Charles Cox and his wife, Eleanor Cox, convey 80 acres of their home
tract to Thomas Cox. Thomas was probably named for his maternal grandfather, Thomas
Watts. Witnesses were: William Herman, Charles Cox, Henry Grogan.
10 v. Frances [Fanny] COX d/o Chas.Cox II was born about 1760 in Henry Co., VA.
11 vi. Eleanor [d/o Chas.II] COX was born about 1760 in Halifax Co., VA, now Henry Co., VA.

THIRD GENERATION
6. Charles COX III was born about 1760 in Halifax Co., VA, now Henry Co., VA.  Charles Cox (III)
most likely inherited land from his father, Charles Cox (II). He lead such a quiet, honest life that he
left few records. His life and death dates were established by reviewing and comparing each year of the
Henry County, VA Personal Property Tax Records and Land Tax Records, Virginia State Archives,
Richmond, VA.  Deed Book 6, page 147, Courthouse, Henry County, VA. This deed is between
Charles Cox II and his wife Elleanor Watts Cox and Charles Cox III. He died about 1832 in Henry
Co., VA. Death date established in Henry Co.,VA Land Tax records in Virginia State Archives, when
he stopped paying taxes and his heirs began paying taxes about 1832. Charles Cox [wife, Frances
Kelley] probably died 1836, not 1850, because his sons began paying his real estate taxes then.
Normally, sons would not have been paying their father's taxes, unless their father had died and they
had inherited his land. Deed Book 6, page 147, Courthouse, Henry County, VA. Dated and recorded:
21 January 1799. Charles Cox, Sr. conveys to Charles Cox, Jr. 80 acres of his home tract, which is
located on bank of Turkey Pen Branch, and bound by Thomas Cox's dividing line. signed by: Charles
Cox and Ellinder Cox. Witnesses: William Norman, Thomas Cox, Henry Grogan.

Charles Cox paid taxes to support the Revolutionary War 1778-1780, page 22, compiled by Mrs.
Lela C. Adams. He was established as a patriot on 27 Mar 1987 on DAR No. 692511 A660, by
Elizabeth Anne Vestal-Miller.
