FIFTH GENERATION

48. Martha Sally JOYCE was born on 20 Dec 1845. Deed Book 17, page 148. Courthouse, Henry County, VA. This deed, dated 25 February 1869, helps establish the fact that Martin Joyce and his daughter: Martha lived near William Cox and his son: Thomas P. Cox. She died about 1902 in Henry Co., VA. Buried Goodwill Primative Baptist Church Cemetery, Ridgeway, VA. She was buried in Goodwill Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
She was married to Thomas Pinkney COX (son of William COX II and Nancy GILLEY III) on 23 Dec 1867 in Henry Co., VA. Marriage recorded in Marriage Register Book No.1, page 28. Courthouse, Henry County, VA. Marriage Register No.1, p.28, Henry Co. Courthouse, Martinsville, VA. Thomas Pinkney COX was born on 15 May 1842 in Henry Co., VA. Parents are named in Henry Co.,VA marriage records 1853-1896. Thomas P. Cox is referred to as heir of the late William Cox in Deed Book 20, page 522. Courthouse, Henry Co., VA. He died in 1929 in Henry Co., VA.1 Buried in Goodwill Primative Baptist Church Cemetery, Rte.621, Ridgeway, VA. He was buried in 1929 in Goodwill Primative Baptist Church.
Thomas Pinkney Cox, nicknamed "Fightin' Tom" served in the 38th Virginia, Infantry, Company "K" of the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He enlisted March 10, 1862, at Cascade, VA. He received a serious wound to the left hand in the Battle of Gettysburg, PA. This wound probably severed the tendons/muscles on the upper side of the wrist, disturbing the muscular/tendon balance and causing the uninjured underside tendons/muscles to draw the hand into a closed fist position. After being treated at Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond, VA, he was reassigned to the Danville, VA area where he worked in a hospital. There are military records for Thomas P. Cox in the National Archives, Washington, D.C.
He is also listed in the book by Gregory, G. Howard. 38th Virginia Infantry, "The Virginia Regimental Histories Series." 1988. 1st ed., 137 pages. H.E.Howard Publ., P.O. Box 4161, Lynchburg, VA. 24502.
The information above concerning the events at Gettysburg was provided by Ella Ernestine Shumate Lloyd, who learned it as a family story, to Anne Vestal-Miller.

Thomas P. Cox and Samuel Harden Shumate both enlisted in Co. "K". Samuel found Thomas on the battlefield at Gettysburg, PA. and carried Thomas from the battlefield when
Thomas was wounded in the hand. They remained friends and when the war ended, they returned to their respective homes, but kept in touch by writing. Samuel, whose home was in Cascade, Pittsylvania Co., wrote to Thomas saying that the land in his area was much richer and better for farming than the Ridgeway, Henry County area.
Later, in 1891, Thomas decided to move his family to Cacade area. Some of their children intermarried.  Thomas P. Cox was a great story teller and he handed down many interesting family stories. He lived with the family of his grandson, Thomas J. Cox, who learned and passed on much invaluable Cox family genealogy.
One story was about T. P. Cox's wedding day:   He had only $2.00 when he and his bride went to get married. The license cost $1.00. That left only $1.00--all of which he used to pay the preacher. He decided to start his married life without a cent or with "a clear slate." Eventually, he did well financially. He farmed and owned a saw mill.
He donated the land for Goodwill Primitive Baptist Church to be built. In addition, he served on the church board. Both he and his wife are buried in the church yard. Martha Sally JOYCE and Thomas Pinkney COX had the following children:
