Norwood, Andrew Herbert
by Edwin L. Carstensen

Andrew H. Norwood was born in Delaware County, New York, 29 December 1859.  He moved with his parents John and Saphrona Norwood to Chickasaw County, Iowa, in 1865 and thence to Antelope County in 1874.  His family located on a farm four miles west of Clearwater.  That year the grasshoppers ate the crops so Andrew went to Tekamah, Nebraska, to find work.  There he learned the harness business.  In 1878, he established a harness shop in Oakdale eventually adding implements, hardware, dry goods and groceries.  He sold the hardware business to A.H. Carstensen in 1925 but continued the grocery/dry goods business in partnership with Raymond and Guy Taylor until his retirement about ten years later.  In the early 1900's his business included gas and water plumbing.  At one time he was Oakdale town marshall and in that capacity operated the town acetylene gas lighting system.

In 1882, he married Loretta Wildermuth (see Wildermuth biography).  Their children were Pearl (1885), Ruby (1887), George (1890), Opal (1893), Aurilla (1896) and Birdie Alwilda (1900).  Opal married August Carstensen and ‘Wilda married Lorenz Carstensen (see Thomsen biography).  Andrew died on 5 October 1936 after a long illness. Loretta remained in Oakdale until her death on 9 March 1959, at the age of 92.
