Local newspapers in Norway

One method of getting in contact with relatives in Norway is to send a query to the local newspaper in the Norwegian community where your ancestors lived. The newspaper editors in these communities are always looking for interesting stories for their newspapers, including brief stories about how someone from their community emigrated to the US in the 1800's and how a descendant in the US is now trying to locate relatives in Norway. Unfortunately, the larger newspapers with nationwide circulation, such as Aftenposten and Dagbladet, never carry such queries.

To make this query method a little bit easier to use, I have created a list of local newspapers in Norway, sorted geographically by fylke (county).  Not all of these newspapers have e-mail, so you may have to snail-mail your query to them. In your letter to them you should include both your street address as well as your e-mail address, so that relatives who read the query can contact you. As with any query, it is best to be as detailed as possible. (The editors, after all, will decide how much space they are willing to give you). As a rule of thumb, the letter should probably be four or five paragraphs long, and should give some information about what your immigrant ancestor did in the US to raise the interest of both the editor as well as the readers of the newspaper. (Please note: You should already have completed some genealogy research before you use this query method, so that you know the full name, including farm name, of your ancestor, as well as the specific community in Norway that the ancestor lived in).

If you cannot find a newspaper for the municipality that you are researching in the list below, you may want to mail your query to each of the local newspapers in the fylke that the municipality is located in, and let each newspaper decide whether to publish your query. Unfortunately my schedule prevents me from replying to individual e-mails requesting information about whether other newspapers exist for any particular community in Norway. The list below includes all of the local newspapers in Norway that I am aware of at the present time.

Happy hunting :-)
