INCH - Percy
The Atlantic Advocate / October 1981 p. 8 / On His 90th Birthday
Sir:
This poem was written to mark the 90th birthday of Percy Inch of Cambridge, NB, the grandfather of the author's wife.
Mr. Inch was born in New Jerusalem, NB on April 29, 1891, on the farm originally settled and cleared by his great- grandfather, Nathaniel Inch, who emigrated from Edenery Bridge, County Fermanagh, Ireland in 1824.
The descendants of Nathaniel Inch have played a large and important part in the Agricultural, commercial and educational life of New Brunswick and have spread to all parts of Canada.
Dr. James Inch was president of Mount Allison University and chief superintendent of education for New Brunswick in the latter part of the 19th Century. The two sons of Percy Inch, Eric and Robert Spenser, have recently retired after distinguished careers in teaching and college administration in Ontario. His daughter, Enid, runs the Loomcrofters of
Gagetown, NB, while this other daughter, Rhoda, is a missionary in the Phillipines.
The family is characteristic of the hardy settlers from all nations who came across the seas in the 18th and 19th Centuries and built a new country from the wilderness. / David L. Benson, 24 Bond St, St. John's, Nfld.
verse - - -
A Farmer / Proud name / of ancient deeds / and fame / won / long before the time / of great sorrow . . . / Across the sea / the wilderness / claimed by right / of muscle / and broad axe / the tall trees fell / to the virgin earth / cleared for planting / and reaping / the rich harvest / of children / to grow and prosper / in the new land / and make it their own / heritage of labour . . . / The great hands / rest light / but firm on steady knees / the job is done / but life / life is far from past / he has been granted / his three score / years / and ten / and taken ten / and ten again / and may well see / the drawing / of his third century / on this / tiny / green pasture / of God's acreage / taking / his family's / just share / for so many / died so young . . . / The past fades / in mist / of tears of joy / and glasses / raised aloft / We salute / the Patriarch / God Bless You Skipper Inch.  = = =   David L. Benson.
