Generation No. 2

2. DAVID2 WRENN (LAMBETH1) was born March 04, 1857 in Rockingham Co., N.C.13, and died October 11, 1931 in Guilford Co, N.C.14. He married NANCY MARGARET FOSTER15 July 07, 1877 in Alamance County N.C.16,17, daughter of LEWIS FOSTER and RACHEL FALLE. She was born May 30, 1848 in Alamance Co., N.C.18,19, and died December 30, 1931 in Guilford Co, N.C.20.

Notes for DAVID WRENN:

In the Rockingham county 1860 Census John and David are listed with George Carter and his wife Martha at household 504. George is 34 and Martha is 21. John is 12 and David is 3. After John's name is something that looks like Jr. In household 500 is Charles Mattock age 66 and Sarah age 65 with William Wren age 8. Below them in household 501 is John Wren age 29 and Elizabeth age 35. They have three children Martha A age 8, Perlina E. age 6 and Mary S age 4.

In the 1870 Census David is living with another Wrenn family. They are in the Simponsville Township of Rockingham County, NC. George Wren is 26 years old and is a laborer. His wife Elizabeth 30, son's William age 7, John W. age 1 and daughter Allice age 4 are all in the household with David age 13. David is listed as a laborer and does not seem to be a son of this George. (His name looked like Daniel, but when compared with another name that ended in 'id' it was the same as David's name.)

If this is the George Wrenn and Elizabeth Smother they were married in 1866 - so William and maybe Allice could be from another marriage or the two were 'living together' before marriage.

In the 1880 Census David is married to Nancy and has a 1 year old daughter Ader (Ada). Also, in the 1880  census Parthenia finally shows up in Rockingham County with a son Thomas age 19. They are living with another women and her son.

In 1900 in the census record David and Nancy are listed as having 5 children with 4 living. Mary Susan (age 13) is living at home with Alma age 9. Also living there is Ada with her new husband Walter Wyrick.

They also have two boarders William and Pearl (can't read last name) they are age 24 and 22 and work in the cotton mill along with Walter, Ada and Mary. David is a day laborer. Alma is still in School.

In 1910 Ada and Alma are living with David and Nancy. Ada is age 28, married 10 years and Alma age 19, married 2 years. Also, Eddie Loaman son-in-law age 20, Walter Wyrick son-in-law age 27 with children, sons Carnie age 5 and Lacy age 4 , also a border Walter Gentry.

In the 1920 Census - David was living with his daughter Ada Wrenn Wyrick, her husband Walter Wyrick and their two sons in White Oak Village, Greensboro, Guilford County, NC

In the 1930 Census - David was living with his daughter Ada Wrenn Wyrick, her husband Walter Wyrick and son Lacy on Maple Street in White Oak Village, Greensboro, Guilford County, NC, he is 72 years old, Nancy is boarding with a Keaton family on Vine Street.

According to David's death certificate he died from Cardio Renal disease and Dr. A. K. Maness had been seeing him from Oct. 1 until Oct. 9 1931. He was 75 yrs 7 months and 7 days old at death. His profession was listed as Mill hand in the Cotton Mill.

He was taken to Hanes Funeral Home and buried at Bethlehem Church in Alamance Co. NC.

In the 1920 Census - Nancy and David are living with their daughter Ada Wrenn Wyrick in White Oak Village, Greensboro, Guilford County, NC

According to Nannies death certificate, Dr. A. K. Maness from Greensboro, NC stated that he had attended her from Dec 8 1931 until her death Dec. 30, 1931, and that she died from Acute Dilatation (their spelling) of the heart and the contributory causes of importance, but not the cause of death was Accidental burns.

On December 8th 1931, Nannie had knocked a lighted candle off of her bedside table and caught her cloths on fire. She was burned fairly badly over a large part of her body. They did not have burn centers and such in those days so she was treated at home. (These burns and the treatment were probably the major cause of her death.) Nannie was 83 at he time of her death.

Notes for WILLIAM HENRY WRENN:

[Grandparents]

For as long as I can remember Mama and Papa Wrenn lived on Maple Street in White Oak. They were living there when Mama Wrenn died and Papa Wrenn lived there until going to a nursing home. I remember that I loved to visit there. I would stop on the way home from school to visit Mama Wrenn.

She always had brown sugar in the pantry. Sweets were a treat for us then, so when I would visit there I would always 'sneak' a chunk of brown sugar. It was not a powder then or at least didn't stay a powder long. It was always a hard lump that you had to break apart. That brown sugar was always special to me and the sneaking of it is one of my favorite memories. I don't have a doubt now that Mama Wrenn knew every time that I got into her sugar, but she never said a word, she let me have my fun.

Papa Wrenn had a big grape vine in the back yard. It was supported by four poles, making a room. The vine grew over and on all sides with one hole that was the entrance to our 'playhouse'. All of us grandkids played in that grapevine arbor and it was a wonderful place for the imagination.

He also had mint growing in bunches around the yard and it was a treat to pluck a few leaves and chew on them. (Mary Ellis)

Ethel Daurety age 18, and Nancy Foster Wrenn , Wm. Henry's Mother, age 64, was living with W.H. and Mary E. in 1920 census.
Was at Will-O-Haven Nursing home at time of death. He was 82 years old.

William Wrenn Dies at 88
William (Will) Henry Wrenn, 88 of 2106 Cleburne St., died yesterday morning at Willow Haven Rest Home.
A retired assistant overseer at the White Oak Division of Cone Mills for 42 years, he was a native of Alamance County and had lived here since he was eight.

Wrenn was a member of Buffalo Presbyterian Church and the men's Bible Class. He also belonged to the Independent order of Odd Fellows No. 21, Paisley Encampment No. 10, Canton General Greene No. 1; the Myrtle Rebecca Lodge No. 51; and of the Grand Lodge of North Carolina. He was also a member of the 60-Plus Club and of the Daughters of America, Chapter No. 6.

He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Helen Wyrick, Mrs. Mildred Anderson and Mrs. Ethel Varner, all of Greensboro; four sons, Clyde L. Wrenn, W. R. Howard Wrenn, James F. Wrenn, all of Greensboro, and Carl E. Wrenn of Chicago, Ill.; one sister, Mrs R.E. Lowman of Greensboro; 19 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 4 P.M. Tuesday at Buffalo Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Gray W. Hampton, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will remain at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Home until the hour of service.

(Son's name was not W. R. Howard Wrenn, it is William Howard Wrenn (no R.) MWE 2/2/1998.)

From the book "Buffalo Presbyterian Church and Cemetery, Greensboro, NC"
The first building, a log hut, was named "North Buffalo Creek Presbyterian
Church". The name was appropriate because of the large number of woods
buffalo which roamed the area. The site was at the northwest corner of the
present cemetery. At a later time a more suitable building was erected in
the southwest corner of the present cemetery. It is estimated that the new
frame building would seat 1000 people. It was completed close to the end
of the Revolutionary War. The land held by the congregation was estimated
to cover 18 square miles at the time the second church was completed.
