William Howard (Bill) Lineberry
Final rites for a 22-year-old Burlington man killed in a construction accident in Greensboro yesterday will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock at the First Reformed United Church of Christ.
William Howard (Bill) Lineberry of 717 Tillman St. was killed when the wall of a 12 foot ditch caved in on him as he and another workman were shoring up the sides of the narrow ditch around 12:15 p.m. He had returned home only a month ago after a year of Army service in Korea and planned to enter Elon College in January.
Lineberry's head was not covered in the cave-in, but the pressure of the dirt on his chest made it impossible for him to breathe, authorities reported. An oxygen mask was applied to his face in a vain attempt to save him while frantic efforts were being made to remove him from the ditch.
His lifeless body was removed after almost two hours of digging by rescuers.
Lineberry had been employed by Dick and Kirkman Inc. for the past three weeks. The ditch had been dug for the installation of a sewer line on Battleground Avenue.
Fellow workers b e g a n digging with their hands to rescue Lineberry immediately following the cave-in, and the Greensboro Fire Department's Rescue Squad arrived on the scene within a few minutes.
Greensboro Fire Chief Clyde Marsh said that members of the rescue squad shored up the remainder of the ditch and used hand shovels and a backhoe to remove the body.
Dr. Carroll C. Lupton, an assistant Guilford County medical examiner, voiced the opinion that Lineberry became unconscious within a minute after the cave-in and that he died of suffocation in about 10 minutes.
He pointed out that the dirt compressed Lineberry's chest and abdomen so that they could not move.
A native of Baltimore. Md., Mr. Lineberry was the son of William Howard Lineberry, Sr. and Mrs. Evelyn Woodford Lineberry of the home. A 1965 graduate of Williams High School, he was discharged from the Army last month with the rank of first lieutenant after two years of service. He had served in Korea for the past year.
He attended Elon College for a year before entering the Army and was scheduled to re-enroll there in January.

Tessie Zimmerman Taylor
There were those who knew Tessie Zimmerman Taylor well, and there were those who knew her only through others. But even those at a distance from her certainly must have felt at least a part of her vast amount of inspiration and hope which she shared. This was evident when word spread Saturday, of her passing, then in a much more evident response when a capacity crowd attended the memorial service for her Tuesday at First Christian United Church of Christ.
Her entire life must have been based on a foundation of goodness and of concern for others. Yet. it was within the past five years when her body started failing that her spirit seemed to get a new nourishment which could not be contained and. therefore, found its overflow with others. There are many people who can tell of their experience with her and who will hold her in a special place within their memory.
"If anyone ever acquired and lived through a faith in God, it was Tessie."
"Tessie felt a spiritual healing. She knew she wasn't physically well, but she was well in her mind and spirit, and she knew that this made its contribution to a lengthening of her life."
"Whatever was to come, she knew that it was in God's perfect will."
These are representative of individual tributes which came as one person after another spoke of how she had touched and impressed them, and how she, in turn left something with them.
She was a deaconess in the First Christian Church and held her church as a priority in her life long before illness struck. When this was diagnosed as cancer, it had its impact on her life, but, in the analysis of many people, it also gave her a new strength in using her life.
"She knew as time passed and as life remained that God was working through her,'' said a close friend. "She knew that life also was to be lived to the fullest, and this is what she did. In that full life, God, indeed, did work through her, for he left so much of her with so many people."
And, indeed, she did continue to live her full life. She and Wayne and their children took their vacation in Canada in early summer. Her physical strength was gradually leaving her at the time, but she and her family still were together in the closeness which they all had known. She even had to use a wheelchair on occasions while on the trip, but she, again, had the strength that was needed to meet the physical demands upon her.
And in the time which passed during her illness, through the vacation and until the end, she did not show an inward illness. Her spirit was outgoing, her enthusiasm was strong her comfort with herself and her faith never diminished.
She didn't hesitate to speak of her condition to those who showed their concern. It was nothing to hide, as she saw it for she merely was having her days through God's decision upon her.
"And she knew, as she would say it, that her life had been extended by as much as two years by the fact that she had been so blessed," as she once told a minister.
This, then, was the life which was being remembered, and which was being given its special place in memory, as the many people came together to express themselves in their own way for having known her, for having been uplifted in some way through her, through Wayne or the children and father, and had been aware of the courage and inspiration which she shared.
There were those who knew her in her many interests as reflected through her close feeling for Elon College, for her teaching, in her sharing of interests with Wayne in the Elon Home for Children, and in numerous other causes which reflected on opportunity for others.
And there were those who felt her tremendous faith and spiritual example based in her church but which spread into every extension which she found for them.
"She did not fear," said one of the ministers who shared thoughts with her.
He then added: "She found her strength in life, and she, beyond any question, gave strength to others. This was, we all know, the way God worked through her."
