Audrey Webster Garrett
MEBANE — Services will be held for Audrey Webster Garrett on Saturday, March 30, 2002, at 2:00 PM at Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church. Mrs. Garrett was a faithful and dedicated member of Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church, teaching Sunday school and Bible School and serving as Treasurer for many years. She was Conference Secretary for four years and a member of Circle # 3.
Mrs. Garrett went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 25, 2002. She was 93 years of age. Services will be conducted by Reverend Richard Moser. Pallbearers will be her brother, Don Webster, her nephews Ralph Squires, Wesley Anderson, David Webster, and Melvin Faucette and long time family friend, Dan Albright. The family will receive friends for visitation Friday, March 29, 2002 from 6 until 8 PM at McClure Funeral Home in Graham.
Mrs. Garrett shared 43 years of her life and her love with her late husband, Vance Stockard Garrett, Sr. Left to miss her dearly is their son, Vance Stockard Garrett, Jr., and his wife, Polly, her grandchildren, Vance Stockard Garrett, III (Trey) and his wife Jerri, John Allen Garrett and his wife Barbara and her great-grandson, Landon Payne Garrett. Her parents John Wesley and Rosa Ella Webster, her sisters Narvie Morrow and Margie Curtis and her brother Marvin Webster, preceded her in death. Her sisters, Dot Faucette, Rosa Faye Anderson, Carlene Squires and Fern Dunn and her brother Don Webster survive her.
Her love of God and His children and a life of service to both can best characterize Mrs. Garrett, a Graham native and lifelong resident of this area. Following in the footsteps of her paternal great-grandmother, she received her teacher training at Churchland in Davidson County, North Carolina and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and began her teaching career in the Eureka School in 1927 where she taught for 9 years. She retired from teaching in 1971 after having taught 44 years at Alexander Wilson. While teaching, Mrs. Garrett set high goals for her students and they strove diligently to meet her expectations. In a recent newspaper interview, she noted that she “loved each one as though he was her own child.” Mrs. Garrett was a firm believer in PTA and parental involvement with her students. She taught over 1500 students-two generations in several families – many of whom maintained contact with her through the years.
Mrs. Garrett was an active member of the North Carolina Education Association and a long time member of the National Education Association. She was a charter member of the Association of Childhood Education and the Alamance County Classroom Teacher Association holding various offices in these organizations. Mrs. Garrett held offices in the Alamance County Veterans of Foreign War Auxiliary and at one time was the President of the North and South Carolina VFW Auxiliary. She was a long time member of the Home Demonstration Club. In 1971, Mrs. Garrett was presented the "Citizen of the Year" award by Governor Robert W. Scott.
After retirement from teaching, Mrs. Garrett enjoyed traveling with friends and family all around the world. A talented artist, she continued to produce works of art and calligraphy throughout her life. She also enjoyed growing hybrid roses and sharing them with her church and community. Many friends returned her gracious gestures by bringing her flowers and roses during her stay in Hawfield’s Presbyterian Home.
We would like to thank Dr. Katherine Bliss and the staff of Hawfield’s Presbyterian Home, especially the "A-Team," for helping to make her last days here on earth as comfortable as possible. We would also like to acknowledge with special heartfelt thanks Mr. Bill Albright-her student, her friend and a son-by-choice-whose love and devoted care for her was limitless.
We will treasure her memory and the lessons of love and understanding she leaves behind. We found great joy in close family ties maintained at great distance. Memorials can be made to the Audrey Garrett Memorial Fund created at 1st State Bank, 102 S 5th Street, Mebane, NC 27302 to be used to encourage the endeavors of the children of the Audrey Garrett Elementary School and continue her legacy. She will be missed by all whose life she touched.
