Section 1. First Generation into America

John (Johan) Paul Vaught

John was b about 1675-1680 at Frankfort, Germany. A descendant, Chester Vaught, reported that it was a family tradition that John Paul came from Luckenberg, Germany. This small village is near Thalfang which is between Trier and Cochem and near the Mosel River. Luckenberg is too small to have a church or to appear on most maps. Any Vital records would be with those of Tralfang. Dr. Helmut Hilgenfeld, a priest and a local historian in Tralfang, Germany, did not find any Vogts in the church records there. He stated that in his opinion John Paul Vaught could have been a stranger to the district. Strangers were not allowed into the district by the Bishop or Trier who was the small lord in charge. However, a few millers were allowed in. As strangers, the millers had no rights. For example, they could not hold land. This could be one reason that John Paul Emigrated. In "The Viginia Germans", authored by Klaus Wust, on page 50, there is an entry for 1744 from the Colonia Capital, Williamsburg. "John Bumgardner, of Risenbach, took his oath and with him John Paul Vaught lived next to John Bumgardner on the North River of the Shenandoah. (see item 5 below) Those taking their oath were inspired to give their birthpalces in Williamsburg. This supports the opinion of Dr. Hilgenfeld that John Paul was a stranger to Luckenberg.

John Paul was married about 1707-1713 to Maria Catharina. She was b about 1687 in Germany.

John and his family arrived in Philadelphia, PA on 11 Oct 1733 on the ship Charming Betty out of London, John Ball master. The ship's roster included: Johan Vogt, age 53; Andreas Vogt, age 12; Casper Vogt, age 8; Maria Vogt, age 46; Catherina Vogt, age 18; Maria Vogt, age 16; (see p 162 Kirkwood)

Areas of interest to Vaught researchers are those areas in VA where the various families lived in the early days when Andrew and Gaspar married and raised families. These areas changed county names frequently. The following information is from E.Kay Kirkham's "The Counties of the United states abd their Genealogical Value"
