Robert and Mary Mills emigrated from Co. Tyrone in Ireland in 1833. The family story says they didn't have enough money to pay the rent, so they took what they had and went to America. (See The Scotch-Irish (Ulster) Farm. )
They had six children at the time, Joseph, James, Eliza, John, William, and Mary (born at sea, according to her obituary). They went first to Erie (Pittsburgh has also been cited),then later moved to PerryTownship in MercerCo., PA, where they stayed. Nine more children were born there. Robert was Episcopalian (in Ireland it would have been Church of England) and Mary was Presbyterian. Many of their graves are in the family plot at theCoolspring Cemetery.
