THE HAMILTON HOMESTEAD IN GREENWOOD TOWNSHIP, CRAWFORD COUNTY, PA

After James Hamilton married Margaret Williams in 1857 he had this house built. According to a Hamilton family story, it cost $100 and took 100 days to build. All of their children were born here. The West Greenwood Post Office was located there for a time. After James's widow Margaret died in 1904, the 60 acre property was left to all 7 of the children. Their son Alexander bought it from his siblings for $1950. The children in front of the house are Alexander's grandson, John Edward Hamilton and probably John's sister Mary Jane. The property was taken by the government during World War II when the Keystone Ordinance Works was built in the area. James and his wife Margaret are buried in the Hood Cemetery just down the road.
