2005-2006 Meeting Schedule

September 2006 — Meeting Cancelled
Due to a move of the NYPC offices from the 15th floor to the 5th floor, our meeting room will not be available. We are canceling the September meeting, The program scheduled for September will be given in November.

We will be having an exhibit a the Family history Fair in October. Look for announcements about the Fair. and we hope to see many of you there.

Sunday, October 16, 2005 from 12:00 noon to 5:00 pm
Don't forget about this free event in New York City -- New York's 16th annual Family History Fair will be held on Sunday, October 16, 2005 from 12:00 noon to 5:00 pm at The Graduate Center, City University of New York, 365 Fifth Avenue (at 34th Street), Manhattan. At this free event, learn how to trace your family history, preserve and interpret family documents, utilize archives and libraries in and around New York, and employ computers as tools for family history and genealogical research.
The Family History Fair will feature 45 genealogical societies, historical agencies, archival repositories, ethnic organizations, booksellers and other vendors offering exhibits and information for the family history buff. Fifteen free workshops on a variety of topics will be held throughout the afternoon.

The keynote lecture, "Castle Garden Records: 19th-century New York City Immigration History," will be presented by Marian L. Smith, Historian, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, History Office and Library.

Featured again this year is the Ancestors Road Show, hosted and coordinated by the NYC Metro Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists. Free, one-on-one sessions with professional genealogists will be offered to attendees who bring in a specific genealogical problem on which they need assistance.

The Fair is the highlight of New York Archives Week, a city-wide celebration of New York's diverse history being held October 9-16, 2005. The Fair is co-sponsored by the Archivists Round Table of Metropolitan New York, Inc. and Continuing Education & Public Programs, The Graduate Center, CUNY.

We'll be looking at: "Military Records" CDs, On-line databases, & Other Sources. We'll also have time to talk about the announcements from the Genealogical Library of Utah (Mormon Family History Centers) about upcoming plans and actions.

Topic: DNA tracking companies
There was a lot of interest at our November meeting in the new DNA tracking companies that are now offering their services to the general public. We'll get a look at a National Geographic film about the Nat. Geo./IBM DNA World Database project called "Search for Adam" and follow up with a discussion of what the different DNA services are actually providing.

Topic: "Getting it Out in Print — Continuation from last month" This Tuesday, March 7, 2006 we'll continue the program from last month with "Getting it Out in Print". At the request of last month's crowd, the presentation will focus on "choosing papers, design layout, and working with fonts and special symbols."

Topic: Slide and Photo Presentation software
This Tuesday, April 4, 2006, in response to group requests, we'll get a look at slide and photo presentation software. Not the software that lets you edit your pictures but the software that can be used to display pictures and storyboards in narrated or automatic presentations. Specifically, we'll get introductory and comparative insights into basic systems such as MS-Power Point, and more sophisticated but easy-to-use packages like 3D-Album.
