FAMILY HISTORY FAIR
This month we will be participating in the annual Family History Fair to be held on Sunday, October 12, at The Graduate Center, City University of New York, 365 Fifth Avenue at 34th Street, Manhattan, from 12 noon until 5 p.m. http://www.nycarchivists.org/fhf.html

Presented by the Archivists Round Table of Metropolitan New York, Inc., the Family History Fair is free and open to the public. Many representatives from genealogical and historical societies, archives, vendors and other groups of interest to genealogists will be present to meet and talk to the public. Additionally, genealogical seminars will be held throughout the day. See the web site for a listing of the seminars. Also, returning this year by popular demand is the "Ancestors Roadshow". Bring your research "brick wall" problem and sign up early for a free discussion with a professional genealogist.

Topic: Graphics and Images
David Kleiman will give a talk about Graphics and Images. Come and review the basics of raster vs. vector images, using scanning, digital cameras, and web-sites to acquire pictures. All this will be followed by a reminder on how to use them in Word, genealogy databases, and slide shows.

Tuesday, January 6, 2004, beginning at 6 p.m.
Topic: In depth Look at Legacy software.
David Kleiman will give an In Depth Look at Legacy. This is the program that Dick Eastman has given a solid "thumbs up!" in his weekly >newsletters. Version 5 has recently been released for Legacy and David >will be discussing and showing eveyone the new features. Legacy comes in two editions: Standard and Deluxe. The Standard is free of charged when downloaded while the Deluxe, which has a few more features, costs a nominal amount.

David Kleiman, chairman of our own Genealogy & Computers Group, will bethe principal speaker at the next general meeting of the NY PC User Group that will be held on Thursday, February 19, 2004, at the school PS 41 which is located at 116 West 11th Street, just west of Sixth Avenue, in Manhattan.

The topic of David's discussion will be "Multimedia ePublishing -- What it is, how it can be used, and how to do it."

In answer to the many requests for help in getting started – and for advanced tips for the experienced – SIG Chair David Kleiman will conduct a "hands-on" walk-through for starting a family history project with specific focus on using the on-line census and immigration records.

Topic: PDA, the Genealogist's Friend
Kate Myslinski will give a presentation focus ingon the use of handheld devices (PDA) as a tool for genealogical research.
  • What's wrong with my pencil? The reasons to use a PDA during research.
  • What do I need - software, device configuration. The best and the worst unwrapped.
  • How much trouble is it? Transferring data between PC and PDA.
  • But I wanted to add something! The issue of viewing vs. updating and the problem of keeping in sync.
  • Keys to pain-free PDA Genealogy. Recommendations for ease of use and greater efficiency.
  • What's coming next? Next gen software, wi-fi and the implications for PDA use.
