- An in-depth look at Generations Family Tree Master Suite and the new on-line US Census.
- October 15, 2000
- The Family History Fair will again be held at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) located at West 28th St. & 8th Avenue, from 12 noon until 5 p.m. This annual event is free and open to the public. Many genealogical and historical societies as well as archives, vendors and other groups of interest to genealogists are there to meet and talk to the public as well as conduct seminars throughout the afternoon. The Family History Fair is sponsored by the Archivists' Roundtable of New York. For more information the Fair , visit their site at: http://www.nycarchivists.org/fhf.html
- The members of the Genealogy & Computers Group also provide lectures on computer issues of interest to genealogists. Volunteers will be needed for 1-2 hour durations during the Fair to staff the Metro NY Genealogy & Computers Group's table. If you wish to assist, please contact Cathy Horn and let her know which hours you can assist at the Metro NY table.

- Caroline Ruda, a professional genealogist who works for the legal profession, will be telling us how she conducts her searches and what resources she uses which have to be admissible in a court of law. She is also an experienced researcher in all types of NYC records. So bring along your NYC questions.

- David Kleiman will discuss GEDCOM files and transferring information between different software packages. [Note: This presentation was previously scheduled for December.]

- James Oppenheim who will talk on Genealogy and Computers for the Family. tomorrow's speaker is the
much-awaited James Oppenheim, whose talk had been postponed from last Fall. James is the technical editor of "Child Magazine" and he appears regularly on television's "Today Show" as part of the Oppenheim Toy portfolio. He is also just back from Toyfair 2001.
James will be discussing some incredibly creative suggestions for genealocial projects with the computer for the family and kids of all ages. So bring your friends and family to hear James speak and bring your pen and notebook to make note of his suggestions.

- On Thursday, April 12, we are pleased to announce that our speaker will be John W. Konvalinka who will talk about "Locating Living Relatives". This is the same talk he gave recently at the GenTech 2001 conference in Texas.
"Are you aware of all the close relatives that you might have? Would you like to identify all of them and be in contact with those who are still living? In this session we will review a wide variety of Internet-based and other tools and successful techniques for doing just that -- and then explore several of these tools in greater depth -- including "new and improved" uses for the Social Security Master Death Index, and various phone, address and surname search tools. We will include case studies of how these techniques have been used to identify and locate living relatives -- to be able to make contact with them and make it possible to organize family reunions."

- David Kleiman will give a talk on interesting utilities and accessories found in several Genealogy Programs. He will also raffle several CDs of data and programs he has received for review.

- David Kleiman will be discussing "What else is there in my genealogy software", or "The other 80% of what my software can do". There will also be a raffle of CDs that David has been sent for review.
