Johannis or John SCHAMP/SCOMP
(1783-1834)
Johannis SCHAMP or John SCOMP was christened on 17 Aug 1783 in the Dutch Reformed Church in Connewago, York County, Pennsylvania. He was most likely several days old when this occurred, putting his birth date very near this date. He was the third child and oldest son of Joost or George N. SCHAMP and Maria SMOCK. Johannis' mother, Maria took her children and left George in Pennsylvania. The reasons for this are unknown, but the following was published in the 25 Aug 1790 edition of the Pennsylvania Gazette (A hearty thank you to Mr. Robert Stewart for locating this for me!):
THIS is to certify, that my wife Mary Schamp has eloped from my bed and board unknown to me, and has taken all my children with her, namely, Peter, Anne, John, Henry and Sarah, without any just cause or provocation. These are therefore to forwarn all persons from trusting or harbouring of her, or any of them upon my account, as I am fully determined to pay no debts of her contracting from the day of the date hereof. But let her return home with what she took away, in a short time, or a few days. GEORGE N. SCHAMP.Maria went to Mercer County, Kentucky with her mother and father, as well as numerous members of her immediate family. Johannis (or John as he was known by then) married Docia TIMMONS, the daughter of Samuel and Nancy TIMMONS on 29 Jan 1810 in Mercer County, Kentucky.
To this marriage was born at least 6 children:
- Samuel Abraham, b. 1811. (Married Lucy Ann SMITH).
- George.
- Eliza, b. 23 Nov 1814, d. 21 Dec 1848. (Married Noah PURCELL).
- John.
- Mary Ann?.
- Jane.
