Martiau Family


                     Generation One

1.  Capt. Nicolas Martiau; b. 1591 in France; m. Jane 1624/25; 2nd
husband, 1st wife; m. Isabella before 5 Nov 1646; 2nd wife, 3rd
husband; d. 1657 at Yorktown, VA.
     He immigrated in Jun 1620 to Elizabeth City, Virginia; departed
England 11 May 1620 on ship 'Francis Bonaventure.' He resided at York
Co., VA. He was a member of the House of Burgesses at Virginia. He
left a will on 1 Mar 1656/57; proved 24 Apr 1657.

     Jane was born in 1593. She immigrated in Feb 1621/22 to Virginia;
on ship 'Seaflower.' She married Lt. Edward Barkley; 1st husband. She
died by circa 1640 at Yorktown, VA.
     Known children of Capt. Nicolas Martiau and Jane were as follows:
                 i. Nicholas Martiau; d; young.
     2.         ii. Elizabeth Martiau, b. by 12 Dec 1625 at Elizabeth
                    City, VA; m. Col. George Reade.
               iii. Mary Martiau; m. Col. John Scasbrook; 1st wife.
                iv. Sarah Martiau; m. Capt. William Fuller; d. after
                    Apr 1678.

     Isabella married Robert Felgate; 1st husband. She married George
Beech; 2nd husband.


                     Generation Two

2.  Elizabeth Martiau (Nicolas1); b. by 12 Dec 1625 at Elizabeth City,
VA; m. Col. George Reade, son of Robert Reade and Mildred Windebank,
1641 at York; d. 1686; bur. at Yorktown, VA.
     She left a will on 10 Feb 1685/86; proved 24 Jan 1686/87.

     Col. George Reade was born on 25 Oct 1608 at Linkenholt Manor,
Hampshire, England. He immigrated circa 1637 to Virginia. He was
Acting Governor between 1638 and 1639 at Virginia. He was a member of
the House of Burgesses in 1649 at Virginia. He was a member of Council
from 1657 to 1671 at Virginia. He left a will on 29 Sep 1670; proved
21 Nov 1671. He died in Oct 1674 at Virginia. He was buried at
Yorktown, VA.
