He was mustered out 29 June 1865 at Edgefield, Tennessee. The poem is transcribed as written by John. After the Civil War, John and his family resided a short time in Chapin, Morgan County, Illinois and came to the Niantic, Macon County, IL area by the 1870 Federal Census and settled in Illiopolis, Sangamon County, shortly after, where he resided the remainder of his life. John is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Illiopolis, Illinois. Herecorded his honorable discharge at the Courthouse in Jacksonville, IL. From John Kaylor "Soldiers letters" I've been reading some long treasured letters, They are wrinkled and yellow and old But though faded and worn they are dearer To me than their measures of gold; For they bear on their pages therecord Of the days where wars cyclone of wrath Winnowed out the ripe grain of Gods harvest Leaveing stubble and chaff in its path. But these letters bear naught of Complaining And never a doubt of our cause In their steed of unflinching devotion To the Country its flag and its land Interwoven with words of endearment To the loved ones at home far away Are predictions grown strangely prophetic When viewed in the light of today. Shall I read you some lines from the pages That have grown still more dear with the years That have Come and gone by since thes letters Received their first baptism of tears. When we read them a hundred times over Thanked God and (took Courage and?) Since we boys who were rocked in the our cradels Were the men who were wearing the blue. For we knew they were loyal and faithful, And where ever their tents they might pitch, They would scale the grand mountain of victory Or die in the very last ditch. Who had whispered Godspeed when we left them And marched off in our uniforms blue. And the letters we wrote them are sacrad, But I read from their pages to you. . From John Kaylor "Soldiers letters" Dear wife the smoke of the battel Lies thick all around as I write, But I know you are anxious by waiting To hear the results of the fight. It was long and intense and our Comrades Went down thick and fast, But the stars on our banner shown brighter For victory crowned us at last. We have buried our dead in the treanches Our wounded are sent to the rear God will Comfort and help us, To win the good cause never fear We Could fight on with (undoubted?) Courage We Could face what ever might Come And the struggle would end all the sooner, If it were not for the traitors at home. You may tell them for me that their hisses May give strength for a time to the foe, But secession is doomed and the Union They can not destory or o'erthrow For the government we are defending Is the best that the sunshines upon. Now may God bless you always, dear wife Yours most loveingly, John. And again my dear wife I can write you But a few lines at the best. For a prisenor cannot wase paper To say what you all must have guessed We held out till the last hope had vanished To surrender was all we Could do We are prisenors now - but our prayers Still go up for the Country and you. Once again How I long for a letter Some news from dear ones at home I have waited and yearned for some message But no token or word has Come. We are crowded in prison by thousands And the list of our dead Comrade tell How slow torture and steady starvation Kill more than bullet and shell . From John Kaylor "Soldiers letters" I have written your over and over How our boys one by one met their fate Until now ten thousand are round me, I seem almost alone - yet I wait. For the tread of the Conquering army To burst open thoes strong prison bars And release what are left of our army To still fight for the stripes and the stars. Still another at last it is over, And I write you dear wife to say, You may look for me home now, A parole has been granted today. It was almost to late for me, A few more days at the best, And I to should of died in the prison And been buried with the rest. But thank God all is over; The release we longed for has Come With an army I marched to battle, All alone I am (loitering?) home On the boat were a lot of exchanged men, Starved so they scarcely Could drag Their poor feet, but thoes heroes Staggered up and saluted the flag. Shall I read of these letters still others They are sacrad to me and to you But I fold them and tenderly lie them With ribbons of red, white and blue, And I lay them away in their caskets With tears for the boys we have lost, And pray God for the cause which they died for May be worth all the price it has Cost. OBITUARY THE STATE CENTER-RECoRD Illiopolis, Illinois Well Beloved Mother Passes Away LIMNEY CERILDA VANORMAN was born May16, 1837, Knox County, Ohio. She was married to JOHN KAYLOR at Redfield, Dallas County, Iowa, August 16, 1857. After her marriage she went in a short time to Indiana settling near Terre Haute. She made these long trips across the unsettled Country in Covered wagons; that being the only mode of traveling in those early days. She used to tell of incidents occurring on these trips that were very interesting; one especially of an enCounter on the prairies of western Iowa with the Mormans who were then going in great numbers to the west. Three children were born to her during her residence in Indiana, namely, Theodore, William and Amanda. While the youngest was yet a babe in arms the great civil war broke out in which her husband enlisted. She, separated from her husband by the cruel and uncertain perils of war, suffered as many brave, noble women in those dark days of bloodshed, praying at home for the safe return of her loved one. She has often told of how when she would hear of battles being fought she would make calculations from letters received whether her husband was there, and then of the long anxious wait to know was he among the slain. Once the news came direct from his Captain that he was killed in battle and later the glad tidings from him that he was not killed but captured and safely escaped. Only one, old enough to remember that great strife can know any thing of the trials she bore during those long dark days when for four years she was a "war widow", sustained by her faith in God and her love for the Saviour whom she had Confessed and obeyed since early girlhood. While the war was going on she moved her little family to Morgan County, Illinois near Jacksonville; there her husband came back to her when the war was over and they then moved near Illiopolis in Sangamon County, where they have since resided. After their removal to Sangamon County, seven more children were born to them: John; Mary Alice; Ednor; Charles; Eva; Alfred and Gertrude. John and Alfred died in infancy, Gertrude died September 27, 1903. For the past fifteen years Mrs. Kaylor had been a patient sufferer. Before her health failed she was an active Christian worker. She was a prayerful woman not given to ostentation, praying to her God daily in her closet for help and guidance. She was a good daughter, her sisters say a kinder sister never lived, a true wife and a good mother. To her, death Comes not as a grim reaper to destroy but as an angel of peace bearing the heavenly message "well done thou faithful one enter into the joy of the Lord". Her life is just begun, her toils and struggles, her pains and trials are over. Hers has been a long and hard trial in that preparatory school which we call the world but she at last entered the higher class where the faithful are peacefully at rest. For the past four years Mrs. Kaylor has made her home with her daughter, Edna Clark in Illiopolis. She was taken on Sunday March 1st to Springfield to the home of her son Charles at which place she became bed fast on last Monday and she died Saturday evening, April 11th, shortly after sever o'clock. The funeral was held Monday at the Christian Church in Illiopolis and the interment was at Riverside. Rev. A. P. Cobb presided at the funeral and delivered a deep disCourse full of thought lofty and ennobling. Miss Gertrude Ford who when a child, Mrs. Kaylor used to love to hear sing, sang the song "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and the choir sang two of her favorite hymns. She leaves four sisters, three brothers, three sons and five daughters, twenty nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild and her husband, relatives and friends followed her earthly form of clay and stood by and watched it lowered into its silent chamber in the city of the dead knowing that God in his wisdom and mercy doeth all things well; that while her body beComes dust her soul has gone forth to the God who gave it and that she is safe with her angel babies united with her daughter, clothed in a new body and new mind and calls us to Come home to her where all will be made clear, safe in Heaven at last.
