OTHER INFORMATION
Pike County is named for Zebulon Pike the discoverer of Pike's Peak. The early settlers were from Pennsylvania, Virginia and Germany.
Until 1861 Piketon, originally called Jefferson, was the county seat. When the Ohio-Erie Canal was laid out, James Emmitt and Robert Lucas, Ohio legislative members, influenced a change of the route so that the canal went to Waverly instead of Piketon. Waverly, named for Sir Walter Scott's Waverly novels, then grew rapidly and eventually took the position of county seat.
