OTHER INFORMATION
Champaign County was formed in 1805 from parts of Greene and Franklin counties. The name is from a French word which mean "a plain," referring to the level land. It is located about 40 miles northwest of Columbus. The county seat for both Champaign County Ohio and Champaign County Illinois is Urbana.
The city of Urbana was laid out in 1805 by Colonel William Ward whose grandson, John Q.A. Ward became one of Ohio's greatest sculptors. The city's name comes from the Latin word for "city." Urbana is the only city in the county and is a diversified manufacturing and trade center.
Industries in Champaign County include; electrical and non-electrical machinery, transportation equipment, paper, rubber, and fabricated metals. Dairy products are the chief agricultural market.
Probate Court has birth, marriage & probate records; Clerk of Courts has divorce & civil court records; County Health Department has death records; County Recorder has land records; County Auditor has burial records.
