Other Information

Butler County, with Hamilton as its county seat was formed in 1803, the same year that Ohio became the 17th state. It was named for General Richard Butler, killed in Arthur St. Clair's disastrous defeat by the Indians.

Where the city of Hamilton now stands, General St. Clair built Fort Hamilton as an outpost of Fort Washington, in 1791. Hamilton is the largest city in the county and is important for the production of vaults, safes, and paper.

The chief industries in Butler County include: metals, machinery, printing and publishing, transportation equipment, food, sheet steel, automobile body stampings, aircraft and missile parts, coke, steel pipe, dairy products and hogs.

Probate Court has marriage & probate records; Clerk of Courts has divorce & civil court records; County Health Department has birth & death records; County Auditor has land records.
