Ohio's Presidents - Rutherford Birchard Hayes
Rutherford Birchard Hayes

[1822-1893]
19th President

Hayes walked six miles a day to get to school. "Ruddy" liked to read in his spare time. After working as a lawyer, he became a general in the Civil War. Then he was elected Governor of Ohio three times. As President, he was the first to make a telephone call from the White House.

Born in Delaware, Delaware County, Ohio, Hayes later lived in Fremont, Sandusky County, Ohio. His grave and museum are also located there. It is beautifully decorated during the Christmas season.
