James was the last President born in a log cabin. As a boy, he led mules along the canal towpaths. He worked at various jobs so that he could page for his college education. All his spare time was spent reading.

In the Civil War, James was a general. He was alos a United States Congressman, Senator, and a college president. After four months of his Presidency, he was shot by an assassin's bullet.

Garfield was born in Mentor, Lake County, Ohio. His later home, Lawnfield, is now a museum. He has a well kept tomb in a Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio cemetery.
