Explanatory Note S.A. White

It was Father Vincent-de- Lerins who suggested, in the second edition of his
Histoire de la Famille Forest (1965), that the Acadian ancestor Michel was
the same as Gereyt de Forest, son of Crispin de Forest and Marguerite
Bornstra. In pursuing his research, he had found "that a persistent tradition, "
among the Forest families in the Gaspe Peninsula, maintained that the
Acadian ancestor came from a family originally from the French Flanders
and that he converted to Catholicism in Acadia." It must be noted in
addition that the Acadian ancestor called himself "de Forest," rather than
Forest, Foret, or La Foret. This latter detail may be readily corroborated by
consulting the parish registers of Port-Royal and Grand-Pre, where the
signatures of Rene de Forest (Rg PR 7 Feb 1718) and Pierre de Forest (Rg 1,
GP 29 Oct 1708) may still be seen. According to Father Vincent-de- Lerins, )
the de Forest family "was widespread in the north of France," but of all of
this family only Jean, from the Avesnes branch (nO Q, above), went over to
Calvinism. He thus drew the conclusion that Michel de Forest descended
from this Jean. Having discovered that Michel could not have been either
the son or grandson of Jesse de Forest, the founder of New York, he tried
to attach him to the family of the latter's younger brother, Gerard. Given
that Gerard had only two sons, one born in 1612 and the other in 1623,
Father Vincent-de-Lerins presumed that the elder one must have been the
father of Michel de Forest, who was born about 1638. A serious objection
may be raised, however, against this presumption. There was no Michel in
Gerard de Forest's elder son's family. On the other hand, Father Vincent-de-
Lerins supposed "that on the occasion of his conversion to Catholicism ...
[the Acadian] took a saint's name, that of Michel, as his patron and also in
memory of his great-grandfather, Michel Maillard, who had not passed over
to Calvinism." It may be admitted that this is possible, but additional proof
132
is needed to make it persuasive. Father Vincent-de-Lerins thought he had
"a sufficiently convincing proof," having received from a friend an excerpt
from an undated list, but "probably from 1658," in the Thomas Temple
papers in the Colonial Office archives in London, giving the names of
persons recruited to go to Acadia, including that of "Gereyt de Foreest, son
of Crispyn de Foreest and Marguerita Bomstra from Leiden."

Unfortunately, Father Vincent-de-Lerins gave no precise reference to the
whereabouts of this list, and research conducted in London by Paul Delaney
failed to relocate it. Without this document to form the base for Father
Vincent-de-Lerins's argument, the question remains open.1

Story* The Landrys of Old Acadia.
by Peter Landry.1
on the web @ acadian-cajun.com

[#111] Claude Landry (1663-1747) of Port Royal:
Claude was the grandson of the first Landry in Acadia. It is calculated that he was born at Port Royal in 1663. I say calculated because there are few records to which one can refer prior to 1671, the date of the first census record to which a researcher might refer. All of the church records for the Acadian parishes have disappeared, except for those at Port Royal from 1707 onwards, Grand Pré from 1707, and at Beaubassin from 1712. "... no registers survive at all for Cobequit, the two churches at Pisiguit, the Rivière-aux-Canards, Chipody, the Pointe-de-Beauséjour, Tinamarre, Chebogue, ... or any of the lesser missions of old Acadia."15
Claude married at Port Royal, around 1684, Catherine Thibodeau. There was a second marriage to Marie Babin which took place around 1725, also at Port Royal. Indeed there was a third marriage (at the age of 78 years?) to Jeanne Bellemère at "Saint-Charles-des-Mines" on the 15th of May, 1741.
Claude had eleven children, four were males: Jean Baptiste (b.1686 [#1111], René (b.1688 [#1112]), Claude (b.1689 [#1113]), & Joseph (b.c.1708 [#1114]).

Note* Claude Landry second generation at Grand Pre.
Birth*circa 1663 He was born circa 1663 at Port Royal, Acadie.1
He was the son of Rene Landry and Marie R. Bernard

Claude 4, Eustache 3, Genevieve 1; 12 cattle, 16 sheep, 6 pigs, 9 arpents, 1 gun.4

Marriage*circa 1725 Claude Landry married Marie Babin, daughter of Antoine Babin and Marie Mercier, circa 1725 at Grand Pre.5,3
Marriage*15 May 1741 Claude Landry married Jeanne Celestin Bellemere, daughter of Andre Bellemere and Perrine Basile, on 15 May 1741 at Grand Pre, St-Charles des Mines Parish.1,6
