Story* Notes on: Nicolas Marsolet

(RN=2050) (CBL.514) Nicolas was only 12 years old when he left his home to join Samuel
Champlain's latest expedition to Canada. Shortly after his arrival in Quebec in 1613, Nicolas
was sent out to live among the Indians and learn the language of the Algonquins and the
Montangnais. He learned the languages well and by the 1620s was considered to be the foremost
Indian interpreter in the colony of New France. During the winter of 1626-1627 he was seriously
ill with pleurisy. After recovering he returned to France for a brief visit, for his presence
was noted in Paris in March 1727. However, by summer he was back in the fur trade at Cap de la
Victoire. During this period he seems to have divided his activities between the posts at
Quebec, Trois Rivieres, Tadoussac and the Algonquin settlements along the Ottawa River.
In 1629 the Kirke brothers seized Quebec in the name of England and the majority of the
Frenchmen in the colony sailed for home. Nicolas remained and agreed to continue as interpreter
under the new English command. Champlain had developed an antipathy towards Nicolas and
accused him of betraying his country. When France regained control of the colony in 1632 and
Champlain returned as Governor, Nicolas, apprehensive of Champlain, went to France and remained
there until 1637. While in France, Nicolas was given the title of Seigneur de Belle Chaise by
the Company of New France. Thes eigneury which accompanied the title consisted of a frontage
of one quarter league and a depth of one and a half leagues on the Rivulet de Belle Chaise in
New France. It was while in France that Nicolas met and married a girl from Rouen.
Champlain having died, the new couple sailed for Canada and on 6 October 1637 claimed their
seigneury. On 20 November 1640 Nicolas enlarged his holdings with the purchase of a second
tract of land on St.Genevieve Hill. However, he did not clear or develop these tracts.
By 1642 Nicolas had secured a post as clerk to the Company and resumed traffic in the fur trade,
in both an official and a personal capacity. In 1647 he owned his own ship which he used for
fur trading expeditions to Tadoussac, and he became known as the "Little King of Tadoussac".
On 5 April 1644 Nicolaswas granted the seigneury of L'Arbre de la Croix in the Cap de
la Madeleine area, a fief more than twice the size of the Belle Chaise seigneury.
On 16 April 1647 the company of New France granted him an equal area of land on the St. Lawrence
River - the seigneury of Gentilly. An additional seventy one acres were assigned by the Company
to Nicolas in 1649 to enlarge his St.Genevieve Hill holdings. Two years later sixteen more
acres were granted to him on the St. Charles River. Finally, on 3 November 1672 he was granted
yet another fief on the Grande Rivere duChene. This fief has been known since then as Prairie
Marsolet. In 1660 Nicolas abandoned his roving ways and retired to Quebec, where he operated a
shop. He made at least one trip back to Rouen.
From the union of Nicolas and Marie there resulted ten children.
