Note* | He Louis had the distinction of being the first settler in the New World. he also has the distinction of planting the first wheat. He cleared the land given to him by Champlain that consisted of ten acres. he and come twice to Port Royal, Acadia but he definitely settled at Quebec in 1617 with his wife, marie Rollet and his children. Louis died of a very bad fall. he was buried at Quebec on 25 Jan 1627. Louis embarked at La Rochelle in mar 1604 for Canada. he was listed as a druggist, the same profession that his father practiced in the Royal House of the Queen Catherine de Medicis. They disebarked in Acadia in May 1604. This was Saint-Marie.1 | |
Story* | Notes on: Louis Hebert (RN=1968). (CBH.3838) Louis spent the first years of his life at 129 Rue St. Honore in Paris, where his father had an apothecary shop called "Mortier d'Or". However, he lost his mother when he was only about five years old. Later, his father ran into financial trouble. Just prior to and during his first years of marriage, Louis lived in the St.Germain-des-Pres area on the Rive Gauche in Paris. In documents of the period he described himself as a merchant apothecary, grocer and Bourgeois. As druggist he signed on with Pierre du Gast, Sieur de Monts, Viceroy and Captain of New France, for an expedition to New France. The expedition left Le Havre 7 April 1604 aboard four vessels. Also members of the expedition were Jean de Biencourt, Sieur de Poutrincourt, and Samuel de Champlain. In the new world they discovered the Baie Francaise (now Bay of Fundy), and landed at Ile Ste. Croix (now Dotchet Island) in Passamaquoddy Bay. The following spring the colony founded Port Royal (now Annapolis Royal) and moved there. Louis went back to France with Poutrincourt in 1607 but returned to Port Royal about 1609 and remained there for four years before again going back to France. This time he renewed contact with Champlain who persuaded him to establish himself at Quebec with his family. In the spring of 1617 Champlain, accompanied by Louis and his wife and three children, set sail from Honfleur, France, on a vessel commanded by Captain Morin, with Quebec as their destination. Shortly after arrival in Quebec, Louis built himself a house. It was the first to be built in the upper town. He also started to clear the ten arpents of land given to him by Champlin. Henry de Levy, Duke of Ventadour, Viceroy of New France, in recognition of Louis' merits, established as a noble fief all of the land he had cleared, and accorded him another seigniorial grant of one league frontage by four leagues in depth. This Louis was simultaneously the first Canadian "habitant", or settler, to support himself from the soil as well as having the distinction of being the first Canadian Seignior. He was the first to plant wheat in the new world and he was also the first officer of justice in New France. He died following a bad fall. A monument to Louis was erected in Quebec in 1917 on the occasion of the tercentenary of his arrival there. Louis and Marie had only three children, all born in Paris. [Back To the 1600-1700 Biography List] Louis Hébert (1575-1627): Hébert is best known as the first settler to come to Canada. In 1617, Hébert "sold his house and garden in Paris and took his wife Marie and three children" to the new world, to Quebec (DCB). Up to this time and for a number of years after there was no family, as such, in New France. Hébert went about taking deliberate steps to settle in: to build a home for his family, to fence land off, and to make a garden. But Hébert was no stranger to the new world, for he came out to Acadia in 1607, and our interest in him comes about as a result of this earlier connection. Louis Hébert was of Paris and followed, as sons did in those days, the profession of his father, that of an apothecary (and thus his life long interest in plants and in gardening). Hébert became related by marriage to Poutrincourt which explains why he eventually became connected to the de Monts expedition that had set out for Acadia in 1604. It would not appear that Hébert came out originally with de Monts; but rather at a later point, in 1606. It was with the arrival of Hébert (likely in conjunction with Lescarbot) that the social affairs of the infant settlement took a definite turn for the better. A number of improvements to the living arrangements at the habitation were made. (See Hannay at p. 83.) And, it was during the winter of 1606/07 that we see that the ordre de bon temps was formed, its principal members being: Poutrincourt, Champlain; Pontgravé; Champdoré, the carpenter; Daniel Hay, the surgeon; young Biencourt, L'Escarbot, lawyer; and, of course, Hébert. (Calnek, p. 9.) Hébert continued with his productive activities at Port Royal during 1607, a year which saw the construction of a grist-mill. [This grist-mill was built, in 1607, on the Allain River, situated near by the present day Annapolis Royal. (Calnek, p. 9.)] Experimental farming activities, undoubtedly under the direction Hébert, continued to be carried on with various grains being seeded in the natural fields surrounding the lower part of the Annapolis River. However, as one will see from our narrative, because of the continuing financial difficulties of the de Monts' company, the occupants of Port Royal including Hébert, deserting the colony, sailed back to France during September of 1607. As previously stated, Hébert and his family went to Quebec in 1617. Ten years after that, in the winter of 1627, within weeks of a bad fall on ice, Louis Hébert died there, at Quebec, at the age of 52. _______________________________ [UP] [1600-1700 List] [HISTORY JUMP PAGE] [HOME] November, 1997.
