Pierre Mayeux

M, #1896, b. 26 August 1699, d. 17 December 1747

Story* Notes on Pierre Mayeux
Pierre's birthplace has been identified as maintenay, commune of Campagne-les-Hesdin, arrondissement of Montreuil, Department of Pas-de-Calais. On 10 June 1720 Pierre and his wife embarked at La Rochelle, France, on the vessel Le Profond bound for the Louisiana Territory to work on the LAW Concession on the Arkansas River. It is known he went there (since their first child was born there), but it is possible he was one of the persons who abandoned lands on Law's Arkansas River grant in 1722 since they are not listed in the 13 May 1722 census of that locality. He and his family apparently returned to New Orleans (where the second child was reported to have been born) and then went to Natchez (where the third child was born). After the massacre by the Indians at Natchez in 1729, Pointe Coupee became a refuge for settlers not only from Fort Rosalie (Natchez) but also for those from Yazoo, Ouachita and Arkansas. It is probable that Pierre came to Pointe Coupee about this time, for the 1731 census of farms and concessions along the Mississippi River shows Pierre at Pointe Coupee on the west bank of the river, with his wife, three children and one negro slave. Marie having died,
Pierre married on 27 February 1739 Marie Francoise MANNE, widow of Laurent DAVID. At the time of the 20 December 1745 census Pierre had 80 arpents of land under cultivation, growing corn, beans and tobacco, and had 22 slaves. Pierre and Marie had only five children.
