ZMrmnNC Zachariah Moorman of NC & SC [A big thanks to Lorraine Hall Keith for the following information; her e-mail address appears at the bottom if anyone wants to contact her personally. DEC 2000. LSS] To Linda and anyone interested in Zachariah Moorman of Anson County, The following is an excerpt of my E-mail to Dolores Kinsey; >You asked if Linda Starr knew the names of all three of Zachariah's wives? Then >you [Dolores] mentioned: >Sarah Hall m. Nov. 10, 1764, Nancy Unknown m. before 1774, and Mary > Matthews, m. July 5, 1774 in NC. And that Zachariah died in 1819 in Indiana. >Did he marry all three wives in NC? I've done considerable research in North Carolina records and can find no "proof" that Zachariah Moorman was married to any of the above. It is certain that he was married to a woman named Mary because Quaker records gave her first name. (Hinshaw 1:831, 1071, Heiss 2:70.) It is logical to assume that Zachariah and Mary were married in either North or South Carolina but I've never found a marriage record. On 1774, 5, 7, Cane Creek Monthly Meeting reported that "Mary (Moreman) (formerly Matthews)" was married out of unity. I interpret this as the date of the monthy meeting when one of the Quakers said that he heard that Mary Matthews was married "out of unity" - not the date of the marriage. Mary's husband's first name was not given. (Hinshaw, Vol. 1, p. 410.) I think that this notation led researchers to believe she married Zachariah Moorman on that date. I suppose they thought this because Zachariah's wife was named Mary and no other Moorman male appeared a likely candidate. This marriage probably is correct but I've never found anything to corroborate it. I'd like to locate her father's will . Did he mention Zachariah Moorman as a son-in-law? So far, no luck. I further believe that researchers assumed Mary was a second wife because two or three of Zachariah's children were born before the date of the notation. However, the notation does not say when Mary Moreman (formerly Matthews) married. I feel that she may have been married considerably earlier but that the Quaker meeting did not know about it. Transportation and communication were slow. Several years may have passed especially if Zachariah and Mary lived a long way from a Quaker meeting. I found a deed that proves that Zachariah Moorman was married to "Mary" as early as April 1770. The first part of the deed was missing but it was recorded in April 1770. An abstract follows: Anson County, North Carolina, Deed Book, Volume 7, Page 206. "...the said Zacheriah Moorman and Mary his wife have full power and Authority to bargain site [sell?] and convey the same said 3OO acres of land and premises unto the said Archilus Moorman..." Witnesses were "Benjamin x Bleoorman" [sic] and "Israel x Snead Jr." Signed with their marks by "Zacheriah x Moorman" and "Mary x Moorman" North Carolina Anson County Session April Term 1770. The within deed was proved in open court by the oath of Samuel Snead Esqr. one of the subscribing witnesses and entered of record in due form of law ordered the same be registered Test Samuel Spencer CLERK Does anyone have any source for Zachariah's alleged marriage to Sarah Hall on "Nov. 10, 1764"? I did not find any evidence for this marriage. I did find an Anson County deed dated June 20, 1774 between Zachariah Moorman, his wife Mary Moreman [sic] and Sarah Hall for the sale of land to David Snead. (Anson County Deed Book K, p. 270) I wonder if someone saw an inaccurate abstract of the deed and jumped to the conclusion that Sarah Hall was Zachariah's wife. Zachariah previously purchased this land from Joseph Hall, who probably was deceased when Zachariah sold the land. Sarah Hall probably was his widow. She may have been required to join in the deed to release her dower interest although the deed does not state this. There might be another explanation. If Zachariah did marry Sarah Hall but I would like to see the evidence. So far, no one has provided any. As far as the alleged marriage to Nancy, I've never found any evidence for it. I can't say whether or not it took place. It may be that another Zachariah Moorman married a Nancy. Best wishes, Lorraine Hall Keith LKGenee@aol.com
