Andrew MOORMAN b. 1689 A big thanks to Doug for updating the information on Andrew, younger brother of Charles MOORMAN (c1683-1757). As he says within the text, some of what he presents is circumstantial evidence that others on the list "may" disagree with. Therefore, as in the last report, I will collect and send comments back to the entire group (four different mailing lists so "replying to all" doesn't work.) The relatives are here now, so I may not get responses back as quickly as we'd all like. But these should be interesting for we are touching on the Francis CLARK line as well as JOHNSON / HALEY and REYNOLDS. I suspect most on the list are like me -- unfamiliar with the particulars of any of these. Enjoy. Now to Doug Tucker's report: Andrew Moorman Sr. has probably been the subject of as much misinformation as any of the Moormans, with the possible exception of his grandfather, Zachariah. We can document the following facts about Andrew Moorman. He was born in 1689 in New Kent Co.and his birth was registered in St. Peter's Parish. He occupied his older brother Charles' property on Whyting Swamp in 1716. He owned property along Lickinghole Creek in Hanover Co. and received two 400-acre grants along Byrd Creek in Henrico (later Goochland) Co. as early as 1725. He lived along the upper reaches of Bryd Creek, just south of the "future" Louisa Co. border, before 1735. He was married to Susannah, whose surname may have been Reynolds, possibly a daughter of Isaac Reynolds and a first cousin of Elizabeth Reynolds Moorman, Charles' wife. Susannah's name appears on deeds (once she is called Susan) of Goochland Co. property sold by Andrew in 1726, 1728 and 1729. In 1735, a Goochland Co. tithe report established that Andrew had two sons over the age of 16. Later records from Brunswick Co establish that these two sons were Thomas, who appears to have been born about 1715 and Andrew Jr. who appears to have been born in 1717-1718. It "appears" from estate administration ruling related to the death of John Moorman in 1758 and the death of Andrew Moorman Jr. in 1761 that Thomas Moorman was Andrew Sr.'s oldest son. The Goochland tithe record establishes that both were born before 1719. Beyond that, I have arbitrarily pegged their birth dates at c1715 for Thomas and c1718 for Andrew Jr. In 1739, Andrew Moorman Sr.'s daughter, Lucy, born about 1723, married Capt. James Johnson, son of John Johnson and Lucretia Massie of King William Co. James Johnson was dismissed from the Cedar Creek Quaker Meeting for marrying out of unity, establishing that Lucy, and probably her parents, were not practicing Quakers. Can we prove that Lucy was Andrew Sr.'s daughter? Indirectly, yes, since we can prove that she wasn't the daughter of Charles Moorman, the only other Moorman male who could have been Lucy's father. (There is no record indicating that Andrew's "brother by tradition" Thomas Jr. (b c1688), survivied to adulthood.) In 1740, Andrew Moorman sold much, but not all, of his Goochland Co. property and moved south to Brunswick Co., VA where he settled along Stoney Creek on the west side of the Staunton (Roanoke) River. Brunswick Co. court orders show that Andrew Jr. accompanied his father to Brunswick Co. Court papers also show that Thomas was present in Brunswick Co. in 1746. (It appears that Thomas Moorman remained in Goochland Co., living on some of his father's remaining land on Byrd Creek.) In 1746, Andrew Moorman Jr. received a 400- acre grant along Difficult Creek in Halifax Co. (the abstract read Pittsyvania Co.) In Aug 1747, John Moorman's name first appears in Brunswick Court Orders and in Dec 1747 Court papers refer to John as "George Smith, also known as John Moorman". What exactly the "alias" reference meant is not known. In Oct 1747, Andrew Moorman Sr. petitioned for a 400-acre grant on the east side of the Pee Dee River in what was then Bladen Co., NC. (The petition was granted in 1749). In Nov 1748, Andrew Sr. sold 300 acres in Lunenburg Co. to Hutchins Burton. In Dec 1749, Andrew Moorman Sr. acquired property on Hitchcock Creek in Anson Co. from John Hornback on behalf of his underage sons Charles and Benjamin. That same Dec, Andrew Jr., acquired Hitchcock Creek land from Hornback and also petitioned for a grant along the Pee Dee River. In 1750, John Moorman acquired 100 acres in Anson Co. from Thomas Redd and in 1751 Thomas Moorman acquired 200 acres from John Hitchcock. So, by 1752, all of Andrew Moorman Sr.'s family, except Lucy Moorman Johnson, had property in Anson Co., NC. All these Moormans (with the possible exception of John) settled along Hitchcock Creek on the east side of the Pee Dee River.. Andrew Moorman Sr.'s children included: Thomas (c1715-1782) m. (1) ________c 1737, (2) Sarah Clark 1752 Andrew Jr. (c1717-1761) m. Catherine Robinson bef1754 Lucy (c1723-aft1784) m. Capt. James Johnson 1739 John (1728-1758) m. Tabitha Clark 1751 Benjamin (1735-1782) m. Lucia Haley 1756 Charles (1736-c1760) did not marry Sarah (1737-1800) m. David Dumas 1753 Zachariah (1742-1819) m. (1) Sarah Hall 1764, (2) Mary Mathews 1774, (3) ?? Mary (1743- ?? ) possibly died young Archelaus (1745-1778) did not marry Of the above, Thomas, Andrew Jr., Lucy and John were born in Hanover Co., VA. Benjamin, Charles, and Sarah were born in Goochland Co., VA. Zachariah, Mary and Archelaus were born in Brunswick Co. although the area where the Moormans lived, west of the Staunton River, became Lunenburg Co. in 1746 and Halifax Co. in 1752. In the Lunenburg Co Tithe List of 1748, Andrew Moorman Sr. is listed with four tithes -- Andrew Moorman Sr., Andrew Moorman Jr., Benjamin Moorman and Charles Moorman. Son Thomas was probably back in Goochland Co. and John may have been living on the aforementioned George Smith property. Andrew Moorman Sr. died in Anson Co., NC in 1756. As far as I know, his will did not survive, but the subsequent distribution of his Anson Co. properties clearly identify his sons. One of the big mysteries about Andrew Moorman Sr. is the number and names of his wives. Property records from Goochland Co. establish that he was married to Susannah (possibly Reynolds?) in the late 1720's. Susannah was definitely the mother of John Moorman who was born in 1728 and may have been the mother of Lucy Moorman Johnson who was bornin 1723. Susannah also may have been the mother of Thomas and Andrew Jr. if only because her parents were close neighbors to the Moorman's back in New Kent Co. where Andrew grew up and lived when he reached his majority. Also, Isaac Reynolds' son Henry was an immediate neighbor to Andrew Moorman Sr. on Byrd Creek in Goochland Co. and migrated with Andrew to Brunswick Co. in 1740. There is strong circumstantial evidence that Andrew Sr.'s daughter, Sarah Moorman, who was born in 1737 and later married David Dumas, was the daughter of Sarah Clark (daughter of Francis and Cordelia Clark) and that Sarah Clark also was the mother of Zachariah, Mary and Archelaus. Sarah Clark may also have been the mother of Benjamin and Charles (I think she was their mother) but we do not know the date of Susannah Reynold's death or the date of Andrew Sr.'s marriage to Sarah Clark. This pronouncement of Sarah Clark as the last wife of Andrew Moorman Sr. is certain to produce challenges, but I think it can be indirectly "proved" as I will try to show, below. Fact #1 -- Francis Clark's 1769 will established that he had a DAUGHTER, Sarah, whose married name was Moorman. Fact #2 -- In 1797, the Richmond (NC) Co. Court issued a power of attorney to William Haley Jr. to represent a Sarah Moorman in the sale of a jointly owned property in Louisa Co., VA that was left to Sarah Moorman and other descendants in Francis Clark Sr.'s 1769 will. In that PoA, Sarah Moorman was described as a GRANDDAUGHTER of Francis Clark, deceased. So, there were two married Sarah Moormans who were descendants of Francis Clark, one a daughter and one a granddaughter. Which Moorman did the daughter marry and which Moorman did the grandaughter marry? It turns out that the Sarah Moorman who granted PoA to William Haley Jr. in 1797 was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Clark and thus was the grandaughter of Francis Clark Sr. How do we know -- because Sarah's 80-acre share of the inherited property in Louisa Co. was sold to Benjamin Clark, who also had inherited an 80-acre share of the same property. It can be proven that Benjamin was the son of Joseph and Mary AND that he had an older sister named Sarah (bc1736). This Sarah Clark was too young to have been the mother of Andrew Sr.'s daughter, Sarah, who was born in 1737. So, the Sarah Clark who was the granddaughter of Francis Clark was the Sarah Clark who married Thomas Moorman in 1752. As further confirmation, David and Sarah Moorman Dumas named their oldest daughter, Unity Dumas after David Dumas' grandmother. They named their second daughter Sarah Clark Dumas after Sarah Moorman Dumas' mother. Another circumstance which supports the identification of which Sarah Clark married which Moorman is that Thomas Moorman's wife, Sarah Clark, bore children up until 1769. Subtract 45 years from 1769 suggests that Thomas Moorman's wife was likely born after 1724. Yet, there is every indication that the Sarah Clark who was the daughter of Francis and Cordelia Clark was born before 1715 and could not have still been having children in 1769. To be fair, we remain unclear about the birth dates and order of Francis and Cordelia's children. However, we do know that Sarah Moorman is identified in Francis Clark's will and her husband is not mentioned whereas the living husbands of his other married daughters are identified in the will. This suggests that Sarah's husband was dead which was the case with Andrew Sr. but was certainly not the case with Thomas Moorman. Hope this helps clarify the saga of Andrew Moorman Sr. Doug Tucker dougtucker@erols.com
