ANDREW MOORMAN d. 1791 and JUDITH CLARK by Linda Sparks Starr NOV 1996 [This is an attempt to examine and reconcile much conflicting in formation on this couple and especially their children. I'll first record what little actually comes from primary records and then will discuss problems with published data. I may regret this later, but I'm working on the ASSUMPTION this Andrew and his father Achilles moved from Louisa to Albemarle and then to the area of Bedford which became Campbell County; therefore, I'm ig noring all the references to Andrews and Achilles in other counties. I want to thank the several persons who have shared their family connections to Andrew and Judith; a special "thanks" goes to Mary Stewart who provided info on the "other" Andrew Moor- mans. Additional information, suggestions and comments are always welcome. LSS] Andrew d.1791 IS the son of ACHILLES MOORMAN and Elizabeth (ADAMS)--proven by will of Achilles, probated in Campbell Co. VA 1 DEC 1785 [Will Book 1, page 74] which "gives" a slave named DAVY to "son" Andrew; DAVIE then appears among the slaves men tioned in the inventory and appraisement of Andrew's estate, [page 194 Campbell Co. Will Book 1.] Also Andrew's land bordered Jesse Moorman's who received his tract per their father's will. Andrew's marriage to _a_ JUDITH, is proven by his will dated 5 MAR 1791; CLARK as her surname from will James Clark cited below. They were first cousins since their mothers were sisters. [The ADAMS connection will be discussed in future files.] Judith, as daughter of Micajah CLARK Sr. and Judith (ADAMS), is "inferred" by will of James Clark [Campbell Co. Will Book 2, pages 95-103]. He names his "aged father" Micajah and states "I "stand guardian for three orphans of Andrew Moorman dec'd." With so many close relatives in the area, James is MOST LIKELY an uncle to the children. Andrew died between March 5 and June 2, 1791 [dates his will was signed and probated, Campbell Co. Will Book 1, pages 182-4.] I THINK Judith died fall 1798 "because": In his will Andrew re quested, for the benefit of his minor children, his estate be kept together as long as possible; yet each child was to get some- thing when they married or became "of lawful age." However he added "at death of my wife the whole of my estate not disposed of to be equally divided among each of my children." Although some had, MOST children had not turned 21 or married by 1798. I there fore think Judith's death is the reason his slaves were sold and money distributed to various children DEC 1798. Although it doesn't specifically say "final accounting", I requested ALL his probate records and the DEC 1799 accounting was the last of several pages sent by the courthouse. Problems We have several very specific birth, death and marriage dates for he and his children published in an assortment of genealogies; most, however, are suspect for the author failed to provide specific documentation. Also, we've located instances of "same name" individuals belonging to other family groups who have the very same birth/death dates as those within this Andrew's family group. Andrew d.1791 himself is a prime example. I've seen data on him with a middle name CLARK which is an error. First of all, middle names did not become fashionable until the late eighteenth / early nineteenth century. Second, he doesn't have a "proven" CLARK in his background. However his first cousin, son of Thomas Moorman/Rachel Clark does. Both of these cousins by the same name are "assigned" birthdates of 2 DEC 1744. It's more likely to belong to Andrew d.1791; BUT, we don't have the necessary documen- tation to prove it. The DAR application for Andrew d.1791 is #356448 if anyone wants to check those records for more specific documentation. A specific marriage date for Andrew and Judith has not surfaced; the date is usually written as "c.1771". Their oldest child, Mildred, married DEC 1787. If she were 15 when she married, a 1771 marriage date for her parents is "reasonable". Indeed the very specific birthdate for Mildred is 13 JAN 1772. Undoubtedly Andrew and Judith were married in Fredericksville Parish for both fathers are found in those records. BUT Frederick- sville Parish covered parts of both Albemarle and Louisa Counties so we still don't know in which county the marriage took place. A Louisa County deed [cited below] dated SEP 1772, Achilles and Elizabeth Moorman to James Watson, identifies his parents as "of Albemarle County". Therefore, I personally lean toward their mar- riage taking place in Albemarle County for I THINK Micajah Clark Sr. was in Albemarle Co. before this date. I looked through the indexes to several Albemarle County books without finding _an_ Andrew Moorman; but, he wasn't old enough or had moved when most of these records were created. However, I'll list them so others won't go over the same ground: _The Deeds of Amherst Co. VA 1761-1807 and Albemarle Co. VA 1748-1763_ by Rev. Bailey Fulton Davis; _Albemarle Co. VA Court Papers 1744 1783_ abstracted by Benj. B. Weisiger III; "The Personal Property Tax List of Albemarle Co. 1782" prepared by Lester J. Cappin for, and published in _Papers of the Albemarle Co. Historical Society_, vol. 1 thru 5. I may well err here, but I THINK Andrew d.1791 is too young to be the Andrew Moreman who made a contract with the Fredericks ville Parish vestry 13 AUG 1767 to take James Welch as his appren- tice "to instruct [him] in the Art and Mistery of a Hatter and provide meat, drink, Lodging apparel and washing." [p 42 cited below] If the 1744 birthyear is correct, he was 23 in 1767. My reasoning is: Andrew (1) isn't yet married; (2) "presumably" had just finished his own apprenticeship so hardly ready to train someone else; (3) I THINK vestrymen looked for older,"father figures" and family men to set an example for orphaned/destitute children; (4) the unmarried Andrew might be expected to still be "sowing his own wild oats", hardly in a position to set an ex ample. Again, this is just my own SPECULATION.[_Fredericksville Parish Vestry Bk, Indentures & Processioning Returns_, vol. 2, transcribed by Rosalie E. Davis. His name doesn't appear in the index to vol. 1.] This Andrew MIGHT BE the one living in Trintiy Parish, Louisa Co. and taxed in 1771 and 1772 per _Louisa Co. VA Tithables & Census 1743-1785_, edited by Rosalie Edith Davis. Trinity Parish was created in 1762; this citation and the one above MIGHT BE proof there WERE two Andrews living in the same area at the same time. I THINK the Andrew Moorman who witnessed the Louisa Co. deed with John Martin and Archelous [most likely corruption of Achilles] Moreman, 14 SEP 1772, Charles Moreman Jr. and Mary to Charles Moreman, is this one. [p.137 citation below] (1) I THINK Charles Jr. with wife Mary is Andrew's brother; the other Charles MIGHT BE his Uncle Charles. (2) The same day, but filed 100 pages later, Achilles Mooreman and Elizabeth of Albemarle deeded land to James Watson. This IS Andrew's father for the deed specifi cally says it was land given Achilles by his father Charles, dec'd [page 149 _Louisa Co. Va Deed Books C, C1/2, D and D 1/2_, abstracted by Rosalie Davis, Manchester MO, 1977] Moving to the Revolutionary War period we find Achilles and Andrew in both Bedford and Campbell County records. Campbell was created from the eastern part of Bedford in 1781 -- the same time these lists were compiled which explains similar records in two counties. However, another Andrew Moorman, this one with wife MARY, lived in Campbell Co. early 1780s. I THINK they moved about the time Andrew d.1791 and Judith arrived; but WHICH Andrew presented the various claims? A series of abstracts of these Revolutionary War claims are published in booklet form by counties: _VA Publick Claims_ compiled by Abercrombie & Slat ten, Iberian Pub Co. (no date). The Bedford Co. book [pages 30-42] contains several pages of "returns of Provisions" collected by Christopher Irvine in 1781. Included among the names on page 5 of his notes are: "Andrew Moreman 1 beef" and his page 12: "Andrew Moreman 10 diets, pastridge valued in specia œ2.3." In the Campbell Co. book, entries presented to the court 2 MAY 1781 (pages 4-11) include: "Andrew Moorman for 250# beef, 2 diets, 1 peck corn for ditto [sd com]." More claims were presented at the 13 JUL 1782 court (page 12): "Andrew Moarman fur sd. Com with 36 days pasturage, 10 diets, 5 pecks corn, 412 bundles fodder". At the DEC 1782 court, Josias Bullock, late Deputy Sheriff of Bedford Co. provided proof he received the following certificates in payment of taxes; in cluded p. 18 was: "Andrew Mooreman for 250# beef". Only ONE Andrew paid taxes in Campbell in 1787--for himself, 5 negroes above 16 and 7 below 16 years old, 7 horses and 20 cattle. [p 257 The 1787 Census of VA: Campbell Co by Yantis Love]. This IS Andrew d.1791 because he "appears to be" living in Campbell Co. when his father, Achilles, died 1785; and he WAS in Campbell Co. DEC 1787 when his dau married Thomas M. Clark. R. H. Early in Campbell's Chronicles pps 461-465 says Andrew lived on the 200 acre tract withheld from the 3030 acres Charles and Achilles Moorman purchased from John Murray in 1782; this land was located on Seneca Creek. This specific tract is men tioned within the deed recorded in Campbell Co. Deed Book 1, p1 4 MAR 1782, John Murray ... to Achilles Mooreman and Charles Moor man of Bedford Co. ... "whole patent except 200 acres conveyed this day to Andrew Mooreman." [page 3, Campbell Co., VA Deeds 1782-1784, abstracted by T.L.C. Genealogy, FL 1991.] This deed was proved "by the oath of John Venable, and the solemn affirma tion of Jesse Moorman and Andrew Moorman (Quakers)." This brings us to the next point where several will probably dis agree with me. Andrew APPEARS to be a practicing Quaker in the above deed. I say "appears" for his name is found only once in the index to _Quaker Records of So. River MM VA 1756-1800_ by F. Edward Wright; that was as a witness to 1789 marriage John Johnson and Rhoda Moorman. I question his being a "practicing" Quaker for the following reasons: (1) he and Judith were first cousins and their daughter married her "closer than" first cousin; (2) yet, Quaker records are silent even though they frowned on marriages between cousins by 1787, if not by early 1770s. (3) Neither marriage appears in Quaker records; (4) nor do their children's births. (5) Judith's father was not a Quaker IF his grandson is to be believed. [McNaught.] Finally, (6) Andrew still owned slaves past the c1790 deadline Quakers gave their members to choose between slavery and religion. [Worrell's Friendly VAians.] Where Now? With so many same name MOORMANs, Mary Stewart and I've decided the best, and perhaps only, way to sort them out is through land records--especially those tracts going from one generation to the next. At the time of his death, Andrew lived on a large tract of land bordering his brother Jesse Moorman. He also owned land on Ruff [Rough] Creek, a tract called Carvers and an entry called Poes. Mary located Ruff Creek for us -- in Campbell Co. "more or less in the middle of a triangle made by Lynchburg, Altavista and Brookneal ... where ... lots of Moormans owned land." The map of Campbell Co. in the Yantis-Love booklet shows Seneca Creek runs in a north/south direction and is located just left of center in the lower half of Campbell Co. just above the Pittsylvania and Halifax Co. boundary lines. I haven't found the purchase deeds for most of Andrew's lands which should be located in Bedford Co. since they are not found in abstracts of Campbell Co. Deed Books 1782-1790. However, there are no MOORMANs in the indexes to my abstracts of Bedford Deed Books A-1 through C-3 ending c1771. The executors of Andrew's estate paid the sheriffs of both Bed ford and Halifax Counties; this SUGGESTS he owned property in those counties and the payment was for taxes owed. Why else would the sheriffs of adjoining counties be paid by his estate? The "Poe" entry is possibly in Bedford Co. The on-line Land Patents provided by VA Library shows one to Andrew Moorman 12 SEP 1793 in Bedford, 100 acres west branch of Seneca Cr, Grants 31, page 75. This COULD BE his infant son, Andrew who received a land entry per Andrew's will. Should we look for the "Carver's" tract in Halifax Co.? Children On to Andrew and Judith's children where erroneous and conflict ing data has been published. Andrew named each child in his will; therefore I think it's safe to say, if a child isn't in his will, that child belongs with another family group. Also highly suspect are the "same name" children in other family groups who have the exact birth/death dates, and even spouses, as reported for children of Andrew d. 1791. Except for son James, order of birth below is the order named in his will. With exception of Mildred who appears to be the only married child, Andrew's will indicates they are all under lawful age. Unless otherwise noted, BIRTH dates below come from page 328 _Some Families of Rev. War Patriots from VA, MD, PA, SC and KY_ by Willa Mac (Duncan) Coulter, Gateway Press: Baltimore, 1993. Mrs. Coulter says this info comes from an undated note from Mrs. Thomas Eldridge to Jasper Hendricks. For the record, this note gives 2 DEC 1744 and 10 MAR 1791 as birth/death dates for "father" Andrew. Now to locate Mrs. Eldridge's source. 1. Mildred --proven as daughter of Andrew who gave consent [looks like] 24th day of December 1787 for her to marry Thomas Clark. The consent form appears at the bottom of the marriage bond sent by the courthouse. His will calls her daughter and wife of Thomas C. (sic) Clark. Her specific birthdate is given as 13 JAN 1772; she died "after 1820" for appears on that census; I haven't checked the 1830 Breckinridge Co. KY census. She probably lived until 1839, final division of Thomas M. Clark's estate. The marriage bond is dated 22 DEC 1787, but filed in Campbell Co. VA after AUG marriages which has created confusion. [I believe they married in late DEC 1787, not AUG 1788.] They moved to Breckinridge Co. KY in 1809. 2. Achilles MAY NOT BE the one b. 10 NOV 1773. The same birthdate is given his cousin, Achilles Veneable Moorman, "probable" son of Charles Moorman and Mary Veneable. He received his father's land on Ruff Creek. Page 842 Hinshaw gives a 12 MAR 1798 date for his marriage to Dorcas Jones; a deathdate of 22 OCT 1815 is also reported for both Achilles. WHICH was born and WHICH died on the dates given? 3. Micajah b. 21 JAN 1775 received the upper half of the tract Andrew lived on after death of his mother. He married Esther Alexander in 1803 per page 842 Hinshaw. They moved to TN c1824 and he died there "c1825" or specifically 9 APR 1826 depending on source. 4. Elizabeth b. 7 NOV 1777 d. 7 NOV 1809. This Elizabeth DID NOT marry James F. Clarkson as some genealogies report. [He married dau of Jesse Moorman p.806 Hinshaw]. She DID marry James Haden "Big Jimmie" Moorman, [son of William Moorman and his 1st wife Jane (Haden)] 24 DEC 1796 in Campbell Co. VA. Both p 842 Hin- shaw and Campbell Co. VA Marriage Bonds are cited for this date; an Achilles Moorman provided surety. Clifford Moorman letter gives marriage date 27 DEC 1796. 5. Nancy R. b. 31 JUL 1781 DID NOT marry Micajah Lynch 19 NOV 1802 as reported by some genealogies. [Campbell Co. Marriage Bonds show he married Ann R. Moorman, dau of James C. in 1821. COULD this be where the "R" in her name comes from?] Genealogies also report she married 2ndly (or only) Aaron Lane. Again, Hin shaw p. 832 says Aaron Lane married Nancy MONROE 25 OCT 1806. Did HE have two wives, both named Nancy? Or is this, too, an error. 6. Lucy b. 20 APR 1783 and d. 2 MAR 1810. She reportedly married 1st Robert Hendrick 26 JAN 1798 and 2nd Howard Bennett. Some genealogies offer only one or the other. I don't have a specific citation--[yet ; at least two of our group are HENDRICKS researchers.] 7. Martha Parita "Patsey" b. 30 APR 1785. Her marriage bond to William Moorman is dated 4 AUG 1806 (p. 842 Hinshaw). [He, too, was the son of William Moorman and Mary Jane (Haden), thus we have yet another case of siblings marrying siblings.] No one has supplied a deathdate for her. 8. James Clark --I've arbitrarily positioned his birthorder here based on 1802 will of "uncle" James Clark [cited above]. Uncle James Clark had already given James C. Moorman the portion of his father's estate in the hands of sd. Clark -- thus James C. Moor man was 21 by 6 NOV 1802 -- or married -- per stipulation in Andrew's will. Hinshaw p. 842 indicates his Marriage Bond to Janet Robinson is dated 13 AUG 1799. My question -- why is he mentioned in James Clark's 1802 will UNLESS he was still "under lawfull age"? Therefore, I give his birth as "after 1781" instead of 10 MAR 1779 which is widely reported. I have he died in Campbell Co. VA, but no date or citation is given. He received the lower portion of the tract his father lived on after his mother's death. 9. Judith Clark b. 15 JUL 1787. She did NOT marry Henry Clark as reported; [he married her neice, dau of James C. Moorman]. She PROBABLY DID marry John DeJarnette 22 AUG 1805 per p811 Hin shaw, vol. VI. They moved to Breckinridge Co. KY. 10. Andrew is the child Judith was carrying when Andrew wrote his March 5, 1791 will. Curiously, Andrew worded his will "In case my beloved wife should prove with child as I believe she is." Question--wouldn't Andrew have "known for sure" she was preg- nant if the child was due a month later? Thus I question the April 18 birth date for son Andrew. [Yes, premature births do oc cur, but fewer babies survived back then.] He received the tract called "Carver's" and the entry called "Poe's". He married Maria Harwood 8 DEC 1812 in Breckinridge Co. KY and died there JUL 1814. Again, more information, corrections backed by documentation or "better reasoning" , and comments, even those which disagree with me, are most welcome.
