Notes for David Lawton Landon:

David and his sons farmed. They grew sugar cane and other things. They also cut pine trees and put shunts and pans on them to collect the sap runoff. They did this daily and moved up the tree until they couldn't reach further. The sap was poured into a barrel and when the barrels were full David and his sons would take them to the place where sap was turned into turpentine. This they did on their farm between Odum, Ga and the river. Baxley, GA is today known as the Turpentine capital of the World.

The first farm of David was very productive-good rich earth. Then they moved -find out why. This new farm near the river had very sandy soil and was not very productive. By this time the boys were grown and had families of their own.

His true love came over to cook a holiday meal (Thanksgiving?) with Grandma Laura and to keep an eye on him. Claude got better and the girl got sick. He kept vigil by her bed, but she died. Claude never married. He would get cleaned up after farming all day, put on his best clothes, clean shirt that his mother had ironed and go to his dead girlfriend's house. He would keep company with her sisters, and Mema said one of them loved Claude. He didn't feel the same way. He never married.

I (Laura) remember going to "South Georgia" with my Mema-Ollie and Pepa-Taft to visit the family. I remember running around outside of Aunt Ada's white farmhouse with the rocking chairs on the front porch. All the kids would play outside, even after dark. We went up to the hog/pen once and I fell in. Boy was I scared! Those hogs were way bigger than I was. I remember them coming closer with their smelling snouts making those hog sounds and then arms (several pair) reaching down over the fence and drawing me up and out. Whew!!!
