Also called Caroline & Circular MM; now Richmond MM. Est: 1739 from the
Henrico-Curles MM.
Continued: 1950 under name of Richmond MM. Counties within bounds - New Kent,
Caroline, Louisa, Orange, Bedford, Cambell, Albermarle, Halifax, parts of
Charles City, Amelia, Goochland and Henrico. In 1724 three members of the
Cedar Creek MM were imprisoned for refusing to pay tithes on priest wages;
These were John Harris, John & James Stanley. Released by non-Quakers
who paid their fines against their will. This sympathetic attitude toward
the Quakers was but a hint of a more serious coming revolt against the Church
of England, which revolt was to have its orgin in this same county shortly
before the American Revolution, many who could not embrace the theology of
the Society were openly sympathetic withits claims to religous liberty. The
revolt against the unworthy ministry of that day all but universal in the
Virginia Colony; but the Quakers were the first organized discenters. For
years it was a common thing for Friends to be deprived of property as well
as personal liberty because on conscientous objections on their part to certain
well known laws. The second movement that led to establishment of what became
the largest (from point of view of area) and most directly continious of
all the Virginia MM, was what was known as the Great Awakening. This spiritual
revival and quickening reached hanover, Louisa and Caroline Counties about
1738. During this great time many were converted and professed them selves
Friends. "Old Joseph Newly" of North Carolina is given the credit of stirring
the people in this section to a great revival. The results was the organization
of many Quaker meetings in these counties. Thus this new monthly meeting
was first met March 12, 1739, its opening session being held in the meeting
house of the newly created congregation in Caroline county at Golansville.
This monthly meeting alternated between Cedar Creek and Caroline for many
years but was called by the name of that place.
