Grandfather, will continued next 3 gen next time. I have some data on the
extended lines and will be only to happy to get that to you to round out my
LaddofOhio line. A lot of the above people are buried in the LADD cem. but
only listed those that are for certain.. The cemetery is in very disrepair
from erosion of the Auglaze River and from vandalism. Ohio enacted a statute
that required the Twps to maintain all cemeteries, both public and private, or
so I was led to believe, by a person at the Ottawa LIbrary, Put.
Co. LADD cem is in Perry Twp and I have often thought about contacting the
township administrators about it, but dont know how to go about that.
Clark H. was the only marker found about 10 year ago /-, I would think that
there is some kind of record somewhere of who was buried there and when... The
death index book might or the actual death certificate might.
Got any ideas on that?

JOHN LADD

The following is made up of a chart, any valid data I could find that was pertinent, all logical conclusions made by others that I could find, and informed thoughts of my own. If anyone can answer even one question posed here either literally or figuratively or add anything further, please contact me, so others who come along later can use this information to better the knowledge of the line. This data file would not have been possible without the very welcome help of Charles Ladd, who descends from John's son, Amos, through his son, Noble. For everything Charles has done to aid this process, I thank him very much.

John and Bathsheba (Lovett) Ladd
Family Group Chart

John LADD
born c. 1635, England arrived VA prob. not long after 7 Oct. 1653 died between 10 June 1679 and 10 Jan. 1680, probably Henrico Co., VA (will dated 10 June 1679, Henrico Co., VA; probated 2 Aug. 1680, Henrico Co., VA; Mary said to be a widow 10 Jan. 1680, see just below)
-married-
#1:
c. 1655, prob. Lynhaven Parish, Lower Norfolk Co., VA (now Princess Anne County) Bathsheba LOVETT born c. 1635, Lower Norfolk Co., VA (now Princess Anne County) died after 15 March 1673, before 10 June 1679, prob. Lynhaven Parish, Lower Norfolk Co., VA (now Princess Anne County) (she is mentioned in Lancaster Lovett's will of 1673; not mentioned in 1679, when John Ladd wrote his will; he referred to his second wife, Mary) d/o Lancaster and Bathsheba Lovett
#2:
probably c. 1678
Mary _______ born c. 1650, England died Goochland Co., VA
A study of the Quaker records of the early Meeting at Curles indicates that John's second wife was Mrs. Mary Criss, the widow of _____ Criss. Some say this was Crispe. Some also think she was md. to _____ Howard, 3rd. This information is from Charles Ladd, cited.
From Henrico Co., VA, Order Book: Mary Ladd, Widow, aged 30 years or thereabouts. Certifies that the now wife of John Smith inhabitant in Charles City County . . . is to the deponent's certain knowledge . . . Wm. Daff . . . County of Rutland. . . sister on the mother's side to L. . . Howbert . . . 10th day of January, 1680

-children-

by #1:
1 Elizabeth LADD - b. 1661 or earlier, eastern VA (under 18 in 1679); She appears to have been of age when John wrote his will 1679, since she is to receive her inheritance right away.
**2 Amos LADD - b. after 1662, VA (under 17 in his father's will in 1679), d. after 1733 in Goochland Co., VA, md. c. 1700, Mary Perkins, d/o Nicholas and Sarah (Childress) Perkins Granted 1,095 acres in Henrico Co. VA, on 16 June 1714, and 343 acres north of the James River, Henrico Co., VA, 17 Aug. 1720. His home was in a part of Henrico County, VA, which became Goochland County in 1728. Had ch. - Frances; Amos, b.c. 1704, d. 8 May 1790, Charles City Co., VA Constantine, b.c. 1706, d. before Aug., 1766, will probated 19 Aug. 1766;
Note that this is probably the first Constantine Ladd, since his mother had a brother named Constantine.
Sarah, b.c. 1708, d.c. 1784;
**Noble, b.c. 1710, Henrico Co., VA, d. 22 Oct. 1782 - 14 Nov. 1782, Surry Co., NC, md. # 1 Mary Elizabeth ("Betty") Davis, c. 1730, md. #2 **Judith Dameron, Jan., 1753, Brunswick Co., VA, d/o Lazarus and Elizabeth (Smith) Dameron; see chart;
John, b.c. 1712, d.c. 1790; Mary, md. William Bradshaw
(I don't know if these children are in correct order, or if the birthdates are correctly estimated), **my ancestors;

3 Sarah LADD - b. after 1661, eastern VA (under 18 in 1679);
4 Mary - b. after 1661, eastern VA, md. ______ Howard (This child can be questioned on the basis of her last name's not being mentioned in her father's will - however, if she was born first and married, perhaps her father couldn't think of her married name, or perhaps he didn't want to mention it for some reason). She is also said to have md. ______ Crispe, 1676 (I have no marriage record for this, nor do I know if the date is correct.). I'm told Crispe or Criss might have been who John Ladd md. 2nd, and that Howard may have been who she md. 3rd. In other words, these two Marys are being confused with each other. Since Sarah and Mary are to share the estate if Mary, the wife, doesn't have a son, could it be that this Mary was Sarah's child?

4 Racell (Rachell) LADD - b. after 1661, eastern VA, d. 1730, Henrico Co., VA, md. before 1716, Edmund Liptrot, had ch.: Amos, and prob. others;
Henrico Order Book: film 5, page 196 In a Court held at Varina for the County of Henrico this First day of October, 1685 . . . Rachell Lead (one of the orphans of John Ladd, deceased) late under the tuition of John Pleasants with the consent of the said Pleasants, ordered to be bound to Philemon Childers according to law and the said Childers giving surety as the law enjoins.
So -- 6 years after the writing of John Ladd's will, Rachell has met the age of majority and cannot pay her bill? Or, are we to presume that Mary is out of money? Note that a Philemon Childers (Childress) was father of Sarah Childress (Childers), who was mother of Mary Perkins, who md. Amos Ladd, Rachell's brother. 10 Jan. 1716, Edmond Lipstrott, Rachell Lipstrott and Joseph Pleasants witnessed the will of Phillemon Childers, Sr. in Henrico Co. If Rachell turned 18 in 1685, she was born c. 1667, which is possible.

5 doubtful Huldah LADD - b. ? (some have her born first, some say born England, some say born last, some say she was somebody else's daughter - What evidence is there that there was a daughter, Huldah here?), md. Peter Wyke, c. 1678 at Prince George Co., VA; by #2:

6 William LADD - b. June, after the 10th, 1679 (named as unborn in his father's will of 10 June 1679; birth month given in Quaker records), Henrico Co., VA, at Claytons, the Ladd Plantation, d. 27 Sept. 1751, on his plantation at Weyanoke, in Charles City Co., VA, and is buried there in the "family burying ground" near his home, md. Huldah Binford, 18 June 1701, d/o Anthony Binford. Contributed many pounds tobacco several times toward building a Quaker meeting house. Chosen "overseer" of Weyanoke Meeting 1 Jan. 1720. Served as a Quaker "minister" for 25 years at the Weyanoke Meeting House in Charles City Co., VA.
Had ch. - John, b.c. 1704, Charles City Co., VA, d. before 11 Aug. 1763, md. 21 Nov. 1724, Charles City Co., VA, Mary Crew, d/o John and Sarah (Gatley) Crew
When Amos, his son, m. on 11 Aug. 1763, he was noted in Quaker records as son of John, dec., CCC.;

William, b.c. 1708, Charles City Co., VA, d. 2 Feb. 1780, age 72, Mecklenburg Co., VA, md. 21 Feb., 1730/31, New Kent Co., VA, Ursulah Ellyson, d/o Gerard Robert and Sarah (Spence) Ellyson;

Various Further Data:

There is a record that indicates that a John Ladd was in VA before 1631/32 (this and much else from Charles Ladd [email protected]).

1p Examination of Laurence Wilson January 3, 1631/32 Master of a ship from which were seized eight hogsheads and two barrels of tobacco. Tobacco was brought to the ship on a cart and he was asked by John Ladd to carry it to John Bradley in London. Does not know where it came from.

_Early Virginia Families Along the James River_,
Vol. II (which I note is a three-volume set: Vol. I, Henrico & Goochland; Vol. II, Charles City County, Prince George County; Vol. III, James City County, Surry County; by Louise Pledge Heath Foley):

Ed. Ladd passage paid by Henry Batts & Mr. Jno. Sturdivant 28 Oct. 1673. Chas. City County.

Thomas Hardsway 288 acs. (N.L.) , Chas. City Co., 2 May 1713, P. 73 adj. ..... Imp. of 6 pers. ..... Edward Ladd.......

Note: In Virginia the Crown gave 50 acres of land to every new settler to the colony. This was known as a headright. Many settlers did not have the money to pay for their ship's passage and traded their headright for payment of passage. In other words, a person in VA could pick up 50 acres per person whose passage to the colony they paid. Sometimes people who had gone to England for some reason returned by having their passage paid. Therefore, there are multiple entries into VA for some people.

This Edward Ladd above looks to be a contemporary of our John Ladd. Possibly a brother? Note that a Joanna Sturdivant md. my ancestor, William Bobbitt, and went with him to VA from Wales (this is an extension of my Cox line). See a Bobbett/Ladd transaction below.

Oct. 13, 1768 -

Note the first word, Friendship, is the ship, followed by the Captain, Ladd, and the same for the rest of the list.

Norfolk, Aug. 19, 1768 -
Stolen from the Friendship, Robert Ladd commander, a small four oared clinch boat, having when taken away, two oars, a rudder, and tiller; she is painted white in her upper flank. and red in the stern, and her bottom paid with tar and turpentine. Whoever finds her, and will send her to Hampton or Norfolk, or on board the said ship shail have ( ) reward.
Robert Ladd

I don't know who this Capt. Robert Ladd above is.

John Lead II Richard Tonstall

My Bobbitt relatives prefer to think the above says "John Leader." I heartily disagree. I've seen the handwritten document blown way up, and the raised up "er" of "October" is not the same as the raised up "II" after "Lead." That they are both raised up is not enough to suggest they are the same. They do not -look- the same. This simply makes me think either John Ladd (ours, of VA) went back to Eng. for some reason and was returning (and this is the opinion of Charles Ladd, cited above); or John Lead II (referring to a son of our John Ladd, named John Ladd), went back to England and was returning (or was born in Eng. and came to VA later than his father). If John Lead II refers to our John Ladd, his father's name was John Ladd, and that said father was of England.

The Bobbitt researchers also say the grant was to William Bobbett. I have more to gain from saying they're right on that score, since he was my ancestor, but unfortunately I just don't see that it says that either.

In addition, I just really need to protest the idea proferred by particular Bobbitt researchers that only certain people have the necessary background to read colonial documents. Anyone with a brain, tenacity, and decent eyesight can read them. Period. To examine this handwritten document yourself, you can go to the following url:
http://www.keithbobbitt.com/Marsha%20Berry/land%20grant/land%20grant.htm
Note that this Bobbett/Ladd info was offered 15 July 2003 to the Ladd-L rootsweb elist by Charles Ladd, cited above, from Jim Christian, another fine Ladd researcher, as follows (information in parentheses mine):

Subject: Early VA Families Along the James --

pg. 44 Will Bobbett 96 A. 3 R., 21P., Chas city Co., S side Appomatock Riv., neigh Mr. Wittington on dMajor Eppes line & the Catale Br., 27 Oct. 1673 p. 481 Trans of 2 pers. John Lead, Richard Tonstall.

This means I'm not the only person who thinks it says "John Lead." Now, if I could just get a few people to agree with me that it actually says "John Lead II." Please note that our John Ladd was commonly referred to as John Lead in documents. Some think it had to do with the British pronunciation, which sounded like the metal "lead." The name is also seen in documents as Led, Lad, Leed, Leadd. English spellling was not universal then.

Note the following added evidence, which probably shows that John Ladd did a lot of traveling back and forth to England, and which shows he traveled with Richard Tonstall at least twice.

_Early Virginia Families Along the James River_, Vol. I, Henrico & Goochland County, 1624 - 1732:
Capt. Mathewes & c. 600 acs granted to Mr. Walter Aston 20 Dec. 1651, who sold to Mr. John Dibdell, who sold to Ellis Else, who sold to Hno. Waterridge & Robt. Wild, who married the relict and adms of Waterridge, sold to Capt. Ewd. Mathews, his father. The residue for trans of 19 pers. John, Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah, Joseph & Wm. Fisher; Mary Drury, Sarah Carter, Wm. Fisher, Wm. Flesh, Ruth Hewanno? Wm. Fisher, James & John White, Tho. Edmonds, Rich. Foster, Wm. Bridger, Jno. Ladd, Rich. Tunstall.

I picked up this note somewhere: Nicholas Ladd was buried in the Quaker burial ground at Hythe, England, in 1699. This I leave as a suggestion merely because it -is- a -Quaker- cemetery.

15 Oct. 1666, John Ladd and John Taylor were appointed to settle a difference between Adam Snale and Adam Thoroughgood regarding the building of an Anglican church, because the jury failed to agree.

ABOUT THE PLANTATION, CLAYTONS:
-----------------------------------------------

John Ladd was granted land in Henrico Co., VA, 1667 and 1668, but seems to have desired to live on his land in Lower Norfolk Co., VA, until probably about the time he married his second wife, Mary, at which time he moved back to the Henrico Co. property. He died at his plantation, Claytons, in Henrico Co., VA, and was buried in the family cemetery there. In order to understand some of this following information, please refer to John Ladd's will at the bottom of this chart.

The Library of Virginia Land Office Grants
Lead, John
24 September 1667.
Location: County location not given
Description: 75 acres 24 pole. 50 acres hereof being formerly granted to Wm. Bayly &c beg.g &c. on ye east side of Foure Mile Creeke.
Source: Land Office Patients No. 10, 1710-1719,
Reel 10.

Note that most people are quoting _One Ladd's Family_, compiled by Ruth Kline Ladd, 1974, about this land just above. She apparently said (page 1) the land was "on the north side of Four Mile Creek." You can see that the Library of VA document says "beg.g &c.on ye east side of Foure Mile Creeke." apparently the head of the land's being land formerly owned by William "Bayly." While I think it's still the same land deeded to Amos and Elizabeth in John Ladd's will (see copy below), and that it was later said to be "on the north side of Four Mile Creek," notice that 150 acres were willed to them, and the house and its land were willed to Mary, the wife (and after her death to William, who was at that time not yet born). This means some land was bought along the way east of there (and therefore north of the creek), since the above grant entitles John Ladd only to 75 acres 24 poles (50 acres of which used to belong to "Wm. Bayly").

Note also that William Bayley (Bailey, etc.) is usually said to have owned the land -east- of Bayley (Bailey, etc.) Creek. I have a hard time understanding where "east" of Four Mile Creek might be, considering that it runs pretty much west to east. Maybe that's what caused Ruth Kline Ladd to say "north" (unless she was privy to the other land deed or was considering later records). My most useful map of the period doesn't tell me which of the westerly branches off Four Mile Creek is the actual origin of that creek, but I presume -that- must be the way the land could be "east" of Four Mile Creek, since those branches are turned north of the usually shown creek, thus allowing an "east" of the creek. If that's the case, he was located a tiny bit further west than I originally thought, but that's still very near a Pleasant family place, and other neighbors of the time.

Henrico Co VA Deed Book 1677-1705
p 256: Edw Mathews of H Co, for L3000 tob, to Alexr Makenny. 100 acres nr plantation where i dwell, bounded by Baylys Brook, John Ladds place called "Claytons". 1 Dec 1691
Wit: Ben Hatcher, John Cox, Sarah Mathews Signed Edw (EM) Mathews, Sarah Mathews

I believe this put "Makenny" between Baileys Creek and the John Ladd place.
The following is from pages 1-3, _The Ladd Family a Genealogy_, by Thomas Mifflin Ladd III, 1964 (info in parentheses mine):

July 24, 1667 John was granted a tract of land in Henrico County on the north side of "Four Mile Creek." This was near the Charles City County line. It is believed that a part of this tract is still in the family of John's descendants. According to Warren Ladd; the old house was still standing in 1875. Harold K. Nelson, who married Virginia Ladd, has a modern bungalow across the road from the ruins of the old home, Virginia died several years ago (this was being said in 1964).

Note that this author is saying John Ladd received a tract of land "north" of Four Mile Creek, 24 July 1667, rather than "east" of Four Mile Creek, 24 September 1667. This may indicate his understanding that there was other land, but it is in error on the date.

Here I'll show the evidence that there -was- other land owned by John Ladd besides the 75 acres for which the record is shown above:

_Descendants of Nicholas Perkins_, William K. Hall, 1957:

Henrico Records 1688-1697:
p 508: Be it known to all men that I Amos Ladd am going to Leave these parts between this & next Christmas & am going to Pensilvania and I would desire all you that I am indebted to come & claime your Debts and I will satisfye you Soe I rest. signed
Amos Ladd
Rec 1 Aug 1694

This is Amos, son of John.

"Note: Amos probably meant Pittsylvania County, VA, because this is where his wife's (Mary Perkins) family lived." An entry of 1 Feb. 1698, states that "it appearing that Amos Ladd did privately depart this co. indebted unto John Woodson Senr. the sum of five hundred forty five pounds of tob" (p. 221 ibid.), however later court and other records show Amos to be still at Henrico Co. (or still considering himself to be "of" Henrico Co.) Perhaps it was a lengthy visit? He didn't say he was going to stay gone. Note that directly after he made this public statement he began wheeling and dealing his land. I think this 1698 disappearance was a different trip.

29 Aug. 1694, he petitioned for possesion of his estate which still lay in the hands of Capt. William Randolph (p. 36 Henrico Orphans Court 1677-1739).

Could it be that he had simply turned 17 years of age and was needing to sow some oats? How do we know he even knew his wife yet? Maybe he really went to Pennsylvania. If he turned 17 in 1694, he was born c. 1677, which is possible.

p 525: 19 Sept 1694. Amos Lad of Co and Parish of Henrico, carpenter, to Edmond Liptrot of same, planter, for L1200 tob, a tract, part of a greater tract patented by Solomon Knibb, late of this county, decd, and conveyed to John Lad, father of said Amos. 1 Aug 1668, 150 acres. Wit: All. Clerke, Wm WM Pierce Signed Amos X Lad rec 1 Dec 1694

*PLEASE NOTE: This tract of 150 acres was received by John Ladd 1 August 1668. This, in addition to the 75 acres above, makes 225 acres in Henrico Co., VA, owned by John Ladd.

Note, also, that this land actually remained in Ladd hands, since Edmund Liptrot md. John's daughter, Rac(h)ell Ladd.

misc wills and deeds 1697-1704 Henrico Co p 159: Amos Lead of Henrico Co, for L12, to John Pleasants, land on north side of Four Mile Creek, bounded by the creek, being land formerly Solomon Knibb's, 30 acres. being part of a patent taken up by my father John Lead, decd. 24 Sept 1667. I Feb 1699/1700. Wit: Mel Richardson, Wm (H) Hudson. Rec 1 Feb 1699.

PLEASE NOTE: This tract of 30 acres was received by John Ladd 24 Sept. 1667, and is considered here to be on the "north" side of Four Mile Creek, and "bounded by the creek." This is part of the land received in the 75 acre grant cited at top. I believe this tract is set in the crook formed by the turning of the creek in its flow north to south then bending to flow west to east. John Pleasants was a near neighbor on the south bank of the creek.

p 198: Amos Leed of Henrico Co, carpenter, for love and affection to my friend and brother William Leed of same, land on east side Four Mile Creek, on Stoney Run, 150 yds fm house where my sd brother lives, and on east side of land of John Pleasants, formerly known as the Great Slash Divident, and on Baleys Brook, 40 acres. 1 Feb 1700/1. Wit: Thos Kingston, Robt Morris, C. Evans Signed Amos AL Leed, rec 1 Feb 1700

_Descendants of Nicholas Perkins_, by W.K. Hall:

On Feb. 1,1700, "Amos leed of Henrico County, Carpenter.... for Dear love and tender affection I bear unto my well beloved friend and brother William Leed, planter, Tract on East Side Four Mile Creek, and bounding on the east by land of John Pleasants formerly known by the name Great Slash Divident...(p. 198 Henrico Records 1697-1704).

I'm showing above the two copies I've found of this transaction in order to: 1) Show you how all documents on the early Ladds differ in at least two ways each, and 2) Show you details each contains that the other doesn't. Note that if you are bounded on the east by a land, you are not east of that land, but west. I think the 2nd document is quoting the original document better in that portion. This John Pleasants land on the east side of the John Ladd property being given from Amos to William is probably the same land Amos just sold the year before to John Pleasants, since the main John Pleasants property is south of Four Mile Creek.

PLEASE NOTE: William Ladd was living at Claytons in 1700. This 40 acres is said to be near where the house is, and to be on the "east" side of Four Mile Creek on "Stoney Run." I have no doubt that Stoney Run is one of the branches at the start of Four Mile Creek. Note that this, plus the 30 acres just above (both parts of the 75 acres of original land), plus the 150 acres of 1 Aug. 1668, sold by Amos in 1694, equals 220 acres. This leaves out 5 acres of John Ladd's land (see above and just below).

_Descendants of Nicholas Perkins_ by W.K. Hall:

This land, comprising 40 acres was sold Nov. 1, 1731, to Pew Price by William Lead of Charles City County and Huldah his wife in a deed which further notes that the land lay on the north side of Bayly's Brook and which added the provision, excepting forty foot Square where my Relations were buried" (p. 138 Part 1 Henrico)

The land was in Henrico County. By this time William was living at Weyanoke. He was said in Quaker records to be an elder at the Weyanoke Meeting in 1703. He died on his plantation at Weyanoke in Charles City Co., VA, 1751.

I believe the 5 acres is the land the house stood on that William inherited from his mother, and that 40 square feet of it comprised a family cemetery that is still in the Ladd family (I hope with all my heart). Where the rest of the 5 acres went is anyone's guess at this point. It's my opinion that it went as extra in the Pew Price sale by William.

Update:
I"ve just received a new topographical map of that area. The source of Four Mile Creek is now near White Oak Swamp Creek quite a ways north; it runs from there very nearly directly south, sometimes slanting a bit southeast, to where it turns east toward Bailey Creek and its mouth there. I have a rather good .jpg map of that area showing settlers of the period, which I have marked with the general location of where I think Claytons was. If anyone's interested, I'd be glad to send a copy. The spot, yes, is a bit northwest of Bailey Creek, and east and north of Four Mile Creek. I still don't know which branch was Stoney Run, but we're talking about a difference of feet, not miles.

This new map I just got shows two cemeteries about 2,000 feet away from each other and about 2,000 feet away from where I think Claytons was. They are barely south of the creek. I don't see this as a difficulty, considering how creeks change their paths. However, there could still be another cemetery north of the creek.

In addition, I found a Henrico County Historical Marker, which marks the Four Mile Creek Baptist Church at the corner of I-295 and State Route 5 (the old New Market Road). The marker states that the church, constituted 5 Aug. 1781, in 1828 was moved four miles west of its original location, which was at "Clayton Spring." The Henrico County Historical Society was no help on this topic. If you'd like to view this marker, go to:
http://photos.historical-markers.org/va-henrico/163_6374

To view a highway map that shows the location of this church, contact me and I'll send you a copy. I got it from a zoom program that won't allow the particular map to stay as a bookmark. I also have an 1862 map, which you are welcome to, that shows the present location of Four Mile Creek Baptist Church. My point with this being that Clayton Spring is likely on the original Claytons patent, a part of which was John Ladd's plantation, Claytons.

"A Collection of Memorials Concerning the People called Quakers, in a brief chapter on William I, notes he was born near Curles (Henrico Co.) in Va., in sixth month, 1679. At about the time of his marriage he moved to Wainoke and resided there the remainder of his life. He died 27th day of ninth month, 1751, and was buried in the family burying ground near his own house, aged seventy-two, and a minister about 25 years. This collection of papers also notes William was the son of John and Mary Ladd, both born in England."

Please realize that these two "burying grounds" were in different locations.

1 June 1704 -
Deed: Jno Woodson to Wm Hobson, ___ acres [HWD 1697- 1704: 394]. Land on N side of James near Balys Run, Clayton's field, Knibb's line and Clayton's patent. For this Hobson hath granted to Woodson a tract near Cornelius Creek, 150 acres, bounded by the creek; being part of a grant to Robt Burton and sold by him to Hobson.

JOHN LADD AT LYNNHAVEN PARISH:
----------------------------------------------

Ruth Kline Ladd's above-cited book states on pg. 2: "In 1672 he sold 400 acres of land on the west side of Lynnhaven River, which sale was confirmed by Bathsheba Ladd, his wife.
"He was granted 700 acres of land in Lynhaven Parish, Lower Norfolk County, (now Priness Anne County), Virginia, on 25 May 1673, described as follows:
"To whom all these presents shall come: I, Sir William Berkley, Gent'l of Virg. give and grant unto John Lad, seven hundred acres of land in the Prsh. of Linhaven, the County of Lower Norfolk, on the Linhaven River. Dimensions: SSW 40 poles, then WSW 102 poles, then NNW 40 poles, then WSW 480 poles, crossing the head of the river, then NNW 200 poles, then ENE 400 poles onto the deeper branch which is on the north side of the river unto the mouth of the lower dam creek, then up the creek the same and prl branch unto the first beginning line.

"On 16 April 1674 John Ladd sold this tract of land, but no wife joined him to confirm the sale."

Note that the 1672 land sale was to John Browning, and the 1674 land sale was to Anthony Lawson. 640 acres equals a square mile.

The will of Lancaster Lovett, dated 19 March 1673, Lower Norfolk Co., VA, names Bathsheba, his daughter, as wife of John Ladd, and John Ladd's will (see below), written 10 June 1679, Henrico Co., VA, names his second wife, Mary. Some suggest Bathsheba died before this piece of land above was sold, but we, of course, do not know that. She may have been too ill to attend the event, or not able to attend for some other reason.
What we do know is that she died sometime between the writing of her father's will and the writing of her husband's will.

NOTE: Four generations later, John Wesley Ladd and his son, Christopher Marion Ladd, both still raised and raced race horses. This is according to the testimony of Vernon Charles Ladd, grandson of Christopher Marion Ladd. Vernon Charles Ladd was my father, and he told me this. See above in John Ladd's will, "one young horse running in Curles." Curles was a plantation nearby to Claytons that had a horserace track. In 1889, Christopher Marion Ladd rode a race horse he raised in the Oklahoma City land run to get land he later traded. This is according to the same oral source. That's over 200 years after John Ladd of VA wrote his will.

--------------------------------

From "Descendants of Nicholas Perkins of Virginia," by William K. Hall, 1957:

#32. MARY PERKINS (see p. 8) married Amos Ladd, son of John Ladd whose will was probated Aug. 2, 1680 (p. 140 Part 1 Henrico Records 1677-1692). The family religion is indicated by an entry of Dec. 1, 1681: "Whereas Jno Lead late of this County of Henrico in Virga decd in his last sickness made a writing (intitiuled a will)....but all the witnesses thereto being quakers (too much adhering to their superstitious principle) refuse to prove the said prtended will by oath (as the law provides) and Mary the relict of said decedt likewise refusing complyance with all the legall proceedings in the management of the said decedts estate...the Justices of the peace...give & grant unto Capt. Wm. Randolph admtion..." (p. 196 Part 1 Henrico Records 1688-1697).

This is not enough evidence to cause the consideration of John Ladd to be a Quaker. This probably indicates that Mary still considered herself Quaker, since John Ladd in his will both desired and hoped she would perform the position of executrix of his will but she refused (due to her Quaker inability to take an oath and that faith's disregard for "law"?), as he seems to have thought she probably would. In addition, John Ladd's father-in-law of his first marriage, Lancaster Lovett, "was a member of the Puritan Church In Lower Norfolk Co. and this would put him at odds with the Quakers. I am sure that if his daughter had married a Quaker it would have ticked him off big time. He did not exclude Bathsheba, wife of John Ladd, from his will" (quote from the writings of Charles Ladd, cited above). I personally have not seen any evidence that John Ladd was a Quaker. That those who witnessed his will were Quakers I have no doubt. That is no real evidence that he was Quaker. Even though his wife appears by her actions to have been a Quaker, I've seen no real evidence of that either, only supposition. It's entirely possible, however, that Mary married outside her faith when she married John. Their son, William, was a very active member of that church, as was his family; they were all cited often in the Quaker records.
Other early Ladds were, also, cited in those records, but I do not find John Ladd being discussed there. It does seem, though, that William Ladd was raised Quaker by his mother, Mary, after John's death.
