Pfeffer Report

Pfeffer

Horb, Württemberg, Germany

First Generation

1. Andreas Pfeffer. Born in Bierlingen, near Horb, Württemberg, Germany, Andreas married Maria Magdalina Sell there on February 3, 1803. Magdalina was born there about 1780. In 1831, their oldest child Felix moved to the United States and settled in Columbiana County, Ohio, and the following year the rest of the family followed, but their trip was marked by tragedy. There was a fire in the hotel they were staying in as they waited to embark in the port city. Their baby perished in the fire, and all of their belongings were destroyed. On 20 Oct 1833, just a year after they got to Dungannon in Columbiana County, Ohio, Andreas died - of a broken heart, the family said. Magdalina died in Dungannon on 27 May 1863; she was 83. Andreas and Magdalena are both are buried in St. Paul Cemetery, Dungannon, Columbiana County, Ohio.

For many years Andreas Pfeffer's gravestone lay broken in a pile with other broken stones in St. Paul Cemetery in Dungannon, Ohio. When we visited the cemetery in October, 2003, we found that Andreas's stone and a couple of other old broken stones had been repaired and placed upright again.

The inscription is: "Hier rut Andreas Pfeffer Starb den 20. Okt, 1833 AD"

The English translation for that is: "Here rests Andreas Pfeffer Died Oct. 20, 1833 AD"

There appears to be more of the inscription going below the soil line, but I didn't want to cause the stone to topple by removing the soil in order to see the rest of the inscription.
