Campbell Report

Campbell

This family has been traced to Tennessee (Greene, Jefferson, and Cocke Counties) in the late 1700's. Since Campbell is such a common name, we can only recognize our people by the constellation of people around them. In Tennesee we find them living near and interacting with the Harmons and the Shellys and other people we find later in Whitley County, Kentucky. In about 1809, our family moved from Tennessee to the part of Knox County, Kentucky, which in 1818 became Whitley County.

First Generation

1. (Alexander?) Campbell. He died in 1810 in Knox County, Kentucky. Although Alexander does not mention any relationship between himself and any of his legatees, I believe he is probably, though not necessarily, the father of James, Jane, and John Campbell based on the facts that he moved from Tennessee to the same place in Kentucky when James and Jane did (John was already dead), he left his estate to their children, both James and John named sons Alexander, and Alexander died 20 years before James, which might put him in the right generation. There are no other known contenders for patriarch of this family, so unless and until better information is received, I'm giving him the title. Check out his will.

The following are his putative children:

  2. i. James (1750/1760-1830).

ii. Jane. Born before 1765, Jane died in Whitley County, Kentucky in 1820/1830. Jane married Jeremiah Shelly, son of John Shelly & Elizabeth. Born about 1750 in North Carolina, Jeremiah died in Jefferson County, Tennessee in 1801; he was 51. Jane was a widow with three little kids, Nathan, Polly, and Elizabeth, when she moved to Kentucky with Alexander, her putative father, and James, her brother.

iii. John. John died in 1801 in Jefferson County, Tennessee, leaving a widow (Ursula?), who died after 1804.
