Kentucky

Southeastern Kentucky
(Whitley, Wayne, and Knox Counties)

1800 to 1880

Our ancestors began arriving in southeastern Kentucky at the turn of the century. In 1799 Isaac West went to Wayne County, Kentucky, and the following year his father Solomon, and several of Isaac's siblings and their families followed. It is said that old Solomon walked the entire way from South Carolina.

A little later, and little farther to the east, James Campbell and his family moved from Tennessee to what was then Knox County and later Whitley County. A few years later the Creekmores, Davises, and Rapiers settled there. And by 1830, Solomon West, the grandson of old Solomon who walked from South Carolina to Wayne County, settled in Whitley County, and so did Isaac Criscillis, John Parker, and their families.

Little by little, I will be adding items to this page which help to show what life was like there when our families lived there. It will take me a while, though, and to begin with, I'll just show a few photographs taken by my brother, Bill Parker.

This photograph was taken near Jellico Creek in Whitley County.

This is the mill at Mill Springs in Wayne County, the community where old Solomon West lived past 100.

I hope you'll check back often to see what's new.
