Hardy County, (West) Virginia, 1786
This Indenture made the thirteenth Day of October in the year of our Lord one Thousand Seven Hundred & Eighty six between Major Cade & Hannah his Wife of the County of Hardy & State of Virginia of the one part & Garret Vanmeter Gent of the said County & State of the other Part Witnesseth that the said Major Cade & Hannah his Wife for & in consideration of the sum of thirty Pounds Current Money of Virginia to the said Major Cade in hand paid by the said Garret Vanmeter at or before the sealing & delivery of these Presents the receipt whereof the said Major Cade doth hereby acknowledge & thereof doth release acquitt & discharge the said Garret Vanmeter his Heirs Executors & Administrators by these Presents they the said Major Cade & Hannah his wife hath granted Bargained Sold Aliened & Confirmed & by these Presents doth grant Bargain sell alien & Confirm unto the Said Garret Vanmeter & his Heirs a Certain tract or Parcel of Land Situate Lying & being in the said County of Hardy formerly Hampshire a Draught of Elk Lick which is a Draught of Vanmeter Run being the same that was granted to Robert Higgins by Patent from the Late Proprietor of the Northern Neck bearing date the seventh Day of May, AD 1760 & Conveyed to the said Major Cade by the said Robert Higgins by Deeds of Lease & Release bearing the date the second & third Days of February 1785 as by the same may appear and is Bounded as follows Beginning at two pines under Patterson Creek Mountain on the North side of a Hill Thence North five Degrees East one Hundred & sixty Poles to two Pines on on the North Side of a Hill Thence North Eighty five Degrees West one Hundred Poles to three Pines on the south side of a Hill Thence South five Degrees West one Hundred & Sixty Poles to four white oaks in a Glade Thence South Eighty five Degrees East one Hundred Poles to the Beginning Containing one Hundred Acres Together with
