[1] Birthdate calculated from age at death. Listed in various records as a Schoolmaster and Land Surveyor. He was listed as a witness to several records in Horbury, W. Yorkshire.

[2] Ann Mitchell Dewhirst was buried 22 November 1782, after giving birth to a son, Benjamin.

[3] Martha Peace Dewhirst was the daughter of Thomas Peace and Martha Binns who m. 25 Aug 1757 in Horbury. Children of this couple are: Ann Peace Chr. 22 Feb 1758; Sarah Peace Chr. 31 Aug 1759; Thomas Peace, Chr. 5 Feb 1764; Martha Peace, Chr. 22 Jun 1766. Martha died and was buried 25 February 1789 and her death was followed shortly thererafter by the death of her daughter, Mary, in March of the same year. NOTE: Record in Horbury; 1796: Sale of half interest in properties - Estate of Thomas Peace dec'd ( Horbury ) - by one of his daughters, Ann - wife of William Coope, w. of George Garfitt ( Kirkheaton ) - to Richard Dewhirst (Horbury), who mortgaged it to John Bayldon ( Hollinghirst, Thornhill ).The record includes details of properties sold and excisting mortgage. etc. etc. This is likely the elder sister of Martha Peace, who married Richard Dewhirst.

[4] At the time of his marriage to Sarah Roberts, Richard was listed with his two sons, Benjamin, age 7 and Thomas, age 2. Sarah was abt. 4 mos. pregnant. The marriage was witnessed by John and Lydia Roberts. John Roberts' name shows up on several documents along with that of Richard Dewhirst as witnesses to various parish activities. Sarah was b. abt. 1769 in Yorkshire and died 1Q 1851 in Wakefield, Yorkshire. She is documented living in Horbury as a widow in the 1841 census along with Ann, Eliza, Joseph, James and a grand daughter, Mary, aged 8.

[7] Ann is enumerated in the censuses up through 1861, living with her sister, Eliza. They are both dressmakers running a shop in Horbury and living on Liagate Gate.

[8] Joseph is enumerated living with his mother and sisters in 1841, working as a gardener. In 1851 and 1861, he is living at Chapel Thorpe, Crigglestone, Yorkshire, working as an Assistant Overseer and a Surveyor on the Highway with his wife, Mary Smith Machell, aged two years older than he.
