Notes for John W. Langworthy (ca 1843)
It appears that John and his family moved from NY to Michigan in 1878, because (according to the LDS web site) the birth of his daughter Nellie was recorded in both states. The Michigan record, from the Heath, Allegan County register of births in 1878, shows that Nellie was born in NY, and that entry was later crossed out.

The next entry in the Heath, Allegan County birth register shows that Silas Squires and his wife Elizabeth (Job’s widow) also had a daughter born in NY in 1878 but recorded in Michigan. So it appears that the two families traveled together.

Kleda Kitchen has provided some information from the book “Mancelona in the 20th Century” by Edward Crippen, which says that John moved from Oceana Co. Michigan to Newaygo Co., and that the family settled in Mancelona, Antrim Co., Michigan in 1887 or 1888. Many family members are said to be buried there, although most of the graves may be unmarked. John was said to be among the first workers at the Antrim Iron Company and may have died as a result of an injury suffered there.

John’s gravestone says he was born in 1851, which is about 8 years later than earlier census records. But few of the graves of the Langworthys in this cemetery have markers, and family members may have added this stone later.
