Notes for Chloe Sperry (see notes)
William Franklin Langworthy, in his book “The Langworthy Family” says that Sheffield’s wife was Chloe Phippeny. No sources are given, and other works naming Chloe Phippeny seem to be derived from WFL’s work.

Sheffield and Chloe had 12 children. So far I’ve managed to find death certificates for 6 of them: Laurin (the oldest), Myron, George, Cornelia, Harry and Harriet (the youngest). Five of the six give their mother’s surname , and all of these 5 say that their mother’s last name was Sperry.

Sheffield’s sister Amy did marry Asahel Phippeny, and it’s possible that WFL’s source confused Chloe’s name when the book was complied many years later. Amy kept the family Bible and recorded the births, marriages and deaths of her extended family (see Vermont Genealogy, v1, No.2, p.57). She mentions Sheffield’s death, but nothing about Sheffield’s wife, which she might have done if she were a Phippeny.

Interestingly, the 6 death certificates give two different first names for Sheffield’s wife: Chloe and Olive. The use of these names does’t correlate with birth dates, so it doesn’t seem that Sheffield married twice. But so far it does correlate with date of death: those dying before 1887 saying Chloe, those dying after 1887 saying Olive.

Stay tuned!
